In addition, the boys in the house, the other Chinese boys in the school, including the two Yuan boys joined us, while Arthur and Frank Lin came out from Cambridge for the day. From all I can find out, Arthur is working as hard as ever at his students in Tech, but he finds the work pretty difficult at times, and especially in individual subjects. I am sure, though, that he is doing as well as we can ask of him and that he will continue to put forth his best efforts to get the most out of the opportunities offered. Frank also appears to be working hard, though, he, too, finds some of his subjects rather difficult. The members of the family still in my household have had, on the whole, a good year's record. Charlie's scholarship standing has not been quite so good this term as it was last year, but this seems to be due entirely to the fact that some of the new subjects had baffled him a bit at the start, for, so far as I can judge, there has been no relaxing of effort or interest on his part. Tom has definitely improved in his studies over last year, though some of the work is repeated work, as you doubtless know, which makes the schedule a little easier for him to handle. I have reason to feel, though, that from now on the boy will gain steadily and increase his momentum. This year Tom is entering heartily into wholesome school activities. He is singing in the school choir, which will no doubt interest you, as it is not easy for a native Chinese to adapt himself to Anglo-Saxon music. Tom's achievement in this respect is all the more creditable, therefore, and I have ben immensely impressed with the ease and naturalness with which he is getting to handle our vocal music. He is also developing into a pretty good little football player, and he had the distinction of playing against Exeter this fall, not as a member of the regular school eleven, but on another team picked from the various club teams of the school and which is permitted annually to have a friendly bout with a team picked from the class. teams of our good rivals at Exeter. I did not see the game, but those who did assure me that Tom's performance was distinctly creditable. Mary has shown, I think, a bit better and friendlier spirit all round. I believe, too, that she has been disposed to make a little more intimate contacts with the other girls at school and to take slightly increased interest in her school life and its general activities. She is still below par, if I may use that expression, in this respect, for her natural inclination is to follow old habits and shrink from activities pronounced in American school life, such as athletics and social interests. She is altogether too inclined, as we say in America, to "herd by herself," though both Miss Clemons and I have done everything we could to urge and encourage her to overcome this weakness. Chiefly on this account I am convinced that by another year Mary should take her place as a boarder, rather than a day scholar, in some good girls' school, where she would be more or less forced by circumstances to mingle freely with the other girls and enter whole heartedly into school activities. These opportunities are here now, but to use them to the full requires individual initiative which Mary has not shown in this respect so far, while there is always the change to dodge most of them if desired. As a boarder Mary would find the conditions somewhat different. The great problem is to find in these days a school that provides the activities mentioned above and so very desirable in themselves, but holding at the same time to the high and fine ideals that have in the past governed the life and work of most of our best American schools. Apparently most of our boarding schools today, especially those for girls, have yielded to the pressure of these superficial, social, and materialistic conditions so prevalent in our American life today. Mary has probably written you that it seemed best to give up the work with the violin. Her teacher assured me that both from the construction of Mary's hand, which doesn’t permit of long reach on the part of her fingers, and because of the age at which she began, she was not likely to make any worth while progress in this work. I have consequently allowed her to substitute for it this year special course in art, for which she evidently has distinct talent and which she thoroughly enjoys. I hope that you will approve of the change. The children are all in excellent health, I am glad to say. Arthur was with us for a few hours during the Christmas holidays, but went to New York for a visit at the time that Charles, Tom and Mary went to Washington in response to an invitation from Dr. Sze, your Minister to this country, to visit him at the legation. We celebrated the Christmas holiday itself together at Andover with several other boys as our guests, and then the party broke up for the rest of the vacation period. I am sure that the trip must have been very profitable to the children, though from their own reports I am afraid they did not see quite so ranch of our capitol city as I had hoped they would. The weather was in part to blame. I allowed Charlie to drop Latin at the beginning of the year, for he found the work extremely difficult and the time and effort given to it were apparently undermining his work in other subjects. It is getting to be a question in my mind whether the boy is perhaps a bit over-conscientious in his studies, as he rather unwittingly admitted to me recently that his head seemed to get tired rather easily. I shall watch the situation carefully this term and see that steps are promptly taken to lighten the load if it proves that he is attempting a bit too much. Tom has begun work on the banjo and mandolin, which if successful will give him a chance to play in the school orchestra, something that he is very desirous of doing. If he shows sufficient talent he can of course take up later sane other instrument that is likely to be of more permanent and genuine value. May I take this opportunity to thank you most heartily for your overgenerous Christmas gift. I have been greatly embarrassed by the receipt of anything so elaborate, realizing its value and the fact that it is certainly not deserved. My appreciation, however, of the exceptionally generous and friendly spirit which has prompted the gift is very deep and sincere, and my thanks are from the heart. In this connection may I make a suggestion, which I trust will not give offence, but will be fully understood by you, and that is that any gifts in the future - if there are such - be limited to trifles. After all it is the spirit which accompanies the gift which sets its chief value, and I have been greatly embarrassed for the past two years by two factors in the situation; first, the large duties I have had to pay on gifts of this kind, and which have amounted in toto to much more than what I have been accustomed with my limited means to invest at Christmas time for all the members of my family circle together; and, secondly, a seeming misconception on the part of the children as to the nature and purpose of the gifts in question. As you doubtless know, on one or two occasions and in response to very definite requests on the part of my good friends in China, to the effect that they would be glad at any time to make small purchases for me there should I desire, we have placed orders, so to speak, but with the definite purpose of settling for the amounts involved by crediting the sums in question to Mary’s account. I am sure that the situation has been fully appreciated by you and others in China, but it very evidently has not been by the children, and since it throws us open to even the possibility of misconception on their part, I am very sure that it will be better for all concerned to have the gifts discontinued entirely. As you of course understand, the arrangements at the house have to be made, from necessity on my part, on a business basis, and I have attempted to the very best of my ability to figure the expenses of each of the children on an exact pro rata basis, so that I should neither gain nor lose materially by their presence in the house. For this reason also it would seem best to discontinue the presents in question. I hope most sincerely that you will not take offence at anything I have said above. It is my desire to be perfectly frank with you, just as I would wish you to be with me, and it is with no lessening of appreciation of the generous and friendly spirit which has always characterized your dealings with me that I feel prompted to make the above suggestions. Sun, Tientsin, April 21, 1930 Relation A related resource My dear Mr. Sun: I have received from the Dean of the Yale University School of Nursing, in response to my recent request, the following statement: "Miss Sun does not complete her course until February, 1931. Furthermore, she will not receive her degree until the following June at the regular Yale Commencement exercises. The University desires whenever it is at all possible that the students should receive their degrees at this time, and the School of Nursing very much prefers to have them do this." I take it from the above that you will wish Mary to remain until her course here is completed next year, even though you may not care to have her stay for the actual awarding of the degree in June. I should myself, however, desire to have her present at the degree awarding if this proves practicable, though I am not prepared to urge that point. Undoubtedly she would find plenty to keep her busy along the lines of her regular work from February to June should she remain for the commencement exercises. Dean Goodrich adds the following also: "In case Mr. Sun desires his daughter to return to China during the vacation months, I think I should also inform you that our vacation periods extend over a month only which would not enable her to make the trip, nor do I believe in her case particularly it would be advisable to give her an extended leave of absence." My impression is that you would not wish Mary to return merely for a brief vacation with only a year of work ahead of her here and the prospect of returning to China for good at the end of that period. I shall await further instructions from you, however, before making any definite report to the Yale Nursing School authorities. Dean Goodrich adds further: "You will be, I am sure, glad to know that on the whole Miss Sun is doing very well. She has made up all but one of her deficiencies, and in the practical field she compares well with the other students." At the end of the letter Dean Goodrich says, "I have recently returned from a trip to the Orient, I had hoped that Mr. Sun would get in touch with me while in Peiping, as I understood his daughter had written him, but such was not the case." I am sorry indeed that you did not have this opportunity to talk with Dean Goodrich in person, for I am sure that you would have welcomed the chance to secure this first-hand and intimate information about Mary and her work and progress at the Yale School of Nursing. Evidently Mary must have carelessly forgotten to write you. I am enclosing a statement of the accounts of Tom and Mary to date. Your last remittance of three thousand dollars came to the Andover bank the latter part of February while I was abroad. Sun, Tientsin, April 17, 1928 Relation A related resource My Dear Mr. Sun: A short time ago I received word from the Dean of Elmira College that Mary's work in at least two subjects was very unsatisfactory and that her status in the college was consequently precarious. I wrote at once to the dean and asked for a frank analysis of the situation as the college authorities viewed it, and I am enclosing herewith a copy of the Dean's reply. Mary's case has worried me a good bit for some time. Early in the year she wrote me a letter, prompted evidently by her dissatisfaction with her work and distress over the situation in general. It has been my feeling that Mary has plenty of ability to meet the college demands, even on the basis of her present schedule of work, but that her utter lack of interest in most of the subjects she is taking and her failure to find in the general college course that which she believes will be of value to her in later life have completely undermined her ambition and that without that ambition progress has been rendered practically impossible. I still feel that, if Mary’s interest in nursing, for example, could be encouraged and permission given her to shape her work along that general line, it would mean a complete change in the picture, and for the better. Dean Harris evidently shares my views, though I do not recall that I have ever discussed this particular phase of the matter with her; nor did I know before that Elmira College provided a course of this kind. Very probably Mary herself may have told the Dean of her ambition, though I can only guess as to that. As I view the matter now, it looks very much as if the college authorities would feel that Mary's work did not justify them in allowing her to return her membership in the college much longer and complete the college course and graduate. Frankly, I should be very anxious as to the effect on Mary of a forced termination of the college career. Such a distressing outcome should be avoided if possible, and I am beginning to wonder whether that can be done without altering completely Mary's present course of study and allowing her to choose a different goal and one more in accord with her natural tastes and ability. I shall, of course, accept your judgment in the matter and urge Mary, as I have always done in the past, to abide by your wishes and do her best to justify your hope; but these latest reports from Elmira naturally make me anxious and lead me to wonder whether we are handling the case to the best advantage of all concerned.
