In regard to Alfred Tsai’s account, we have been giving him, according to your suggestion, a regular weekly allowance of one dollar. This is entered as cash on the bill. Occasionally Alfred has asked for extra money for the purchase of some little item of clothing etc. Whenever the request has seemed necessary or reasonable I have increased the amount of the weekly allowance to cover it. The latter I am returning herewith. I have already heard from Theodora about the change of location and will look over my files to see if I have neglected to send any of her last letters to yon. Very likely I have been careless. As for Alfred Tsai, I am perfectly willing that he should have $5.00 a month just for his own personal extravagances, soda, candy, and what not. From his very evident tendencies to spend freely, however, I know he must be held with a stiff hand and consequently I have asked him to get from you the necessary cash for toilet articles, hair cuts and the rest; though even here I am sure he will bear watching, for I am frank to say that I have not yet been impressed with any excess of frankness and outright honesty on his part. I may misjudge him but I know his sister worries about him and so do I. Her attitude towards mousy is just the reverse and she keeps telling me that he must be held in leash. He is still young enough, so that I think we can put him into shape if we start early and keep at it.
