I am enclosing herewith a statement of the accounts of the two children covering the period since I last reported to you on October 9, 1928. The interest item on the credit side represents interest received from the savings department of the Andover National Bank on part of the sum which you originally sent me and which was deposited in the savings department pending the time when it would necessarily have to be transferred to the checking account. I am still carrying in the names of the two children and myself a further account with the Andover Savings Bank on which interest has been accruing and which will be included in a later statement, as I have not yet been compelled to withdraw this deposit from the savings bank.

So far as I can tell, both Alfred and Helen are starting off on a new school year in the best of health and spirits. Helen has been doing excellently in her work from the start, and I am hoping that Alfred will be able to develop a little more intellectual momentum this year. Increasing maturity ought to help him in this respect.

With warm personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Mr. Tsai:

Your good letter of July 30 has recently reached me. Only a few days after its receipt Helen and Alfred arrived in town, to invest several days before beginning their work of the new school year. Both seemed to be in the best of health and spirits.

Please don’t give yourself any concern about the transmission of more funds at this time. I shall not need any more for a long time yet since your earlier and generous remittance has not begun to be exhausted.

The tin of tea to which you refer - at least, I assume it is that one - arrived a few days ago and I hope to be able to sample it shortly. Needless to say, I appreciate more deeply than I can tell you your thoughtfulness in sending me tea of so rare a variety, for I know well enough how highly the Chinese value tea of such fine quality. Again my thanks, hearty and sincere.

We shall be on the lookout for the sons of Mr. Pan Fou when they arrive, which I hope will be soon, as school is getting under way this week. Alfred tells me that he expects them here shortly, but thus far I have had no official word of their whereabouts. Anything I can do to aid them while they are in America will be accepted as a privilege.

With warm personal regards, and hoping that the disturbances in Manchuria of which we have read so much in the papers of late may be speedily dispelled, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mr. Tsai:

On my return to Andover after my summer holiday, I find your good letter of August 6 and note the delay that has occurred in the receipt of letters which I earlier mailed you. I am glad that these have finally reached their destination, though I am not quite sure that all of them have gone through.

Helen and Alfred have both returned from their summer camps and are passing a few days with Dr. and Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth. Helen called me up on the phone last night, and I expect them back here tomorrow or the first of the coming week. They will have another week or two on their hands before the next school year opens for them. It is very difficult to plan wisely for these broken periods that occur between the close of the regular school year and the opening of summer camps and again the close of the summer camp season and the opening of the new school year. It has been my experience with all of my Chinese wards that these periods are not only the most difficult to handle wisely but are likely also to prove the most expensive.

I have decided to send Alfred back to the Mont Vernon School for the coming year, and for the reasons already explained in my earlier letters and of which you have been good enough to express your personal approval. Plans for Helen’s work this year have not yet been fully consummated, but I shall take her over within a few days to Bradford Academy, one of the best of our New England schools for girls, and discuss with the authorities there whether she is ready for work of that grade. Bradford has recently developed what is known as a Junior College course which carries the pupil through work approximating the work of Freshman and Sophomore years in the regular colleges. It is designed to give a well rounded education to those who do not wish or are not seemingly qualified to do the higher college work. I am inclined to think that something of this sort would be well suited for Helen, since you do not favor, apparently, the regular college course for her. I am not sure, however, that she has had enough work to date to enable her to undertake such a course, and it may be wise, therefore, to allow her to return to the Whittier School for still another year’s preparation. Mrs. Russell, the principal of that school, feels that Helen should have this extra year there, and I would favor it myself, and perhaps unreservedly, if it were not for the fact that most of the girls there are distinctly younger than Helen and I am anxious to have her enjoy the companionship of more girls of her own age.

Another factor that enters into the situation is that I don’t wish to locate Helen, if I can help it, too far from her brother or from me. There are excellent schools scattered through the East, several of which I should consider in every way suitable for Helen in this stage of her development, but they are for the most part at some distance from us here and would involve crossing large cities, like New York, on the journey to and from. This presents a big problem, for, even when Alfred and Helen have occasion to cross Boston, I am accustomed to have some responsible person take them in change, as do not feel that they, or Alfred at least, are quite ready to assume responsibilities of this kind for themselves.

I note your suggestions about books for the children, and I will from time to time secure books of the character you have mentioned and present them as presents from you and Mrs. Tsai, as you have requested. Helen is immensely interested in good literature already, and I hope and believe that we shall eventually stir something of this desirable enthusiasm in Alfred as well. Your own experience corresponds with mine, for it was not until well into my college course that I became thoroughly interested in my work and ambitious to make the most out of the opportunities offered me. We must be patient, therefore, with Alfred who is still just a normal wholesome boy.

The moment this opening pressure is off I hope to be able to send you statements of the children’s expenses and expenditures to date.

With kindest regards to Mrs. Tsai and yourself and the hope that you are enjoying your new home, believe me

Ever sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mr. Humphreys:

We are having a little trouble in straightening out the work of Arthur Sun, one of our Chinese students now in the Senior class, with reference to admission to the Institute next fall. The case has already been called to the attention of your office, and has undoubtedly been dealt with very fairly, but Mr. Newton, our Senior Class Officer, and I are wondering whether it may yet be possible to secure a little more in the way of admission credits from the boy's previous record in China, notably at Tsing Hua College. I believe you will allow a substitution of Chinese for the regular German requirement? If so, that particular difficulty will be taken care of. Is there no way that the History requirement can be made on the basis of the work covered in China, which includes a large amount of Chinese History and Literature? Also is it possible that some subject of subjects on that list can be used for the two-year elective requirement. If an answer to those inquiries can be made in the affirmative, I believe we shall have no difficulty in rounding out the boy's preparation and sending him to you next fall. I am sending back the Tsing Hua certificate for your assistance.

I might say that Arthur Sun, the boy in question, happens to live in my own house. He is a very earnest and hard working fellow and has real ability in certain lines; in Mechanical Drawing he is one of the best in the class.

With personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours, </text>

My dear Mr. Souter:

Thank you for your good letter of April 26 and for your thoughtfulness in sending me a copy of the “World’s Health.” The latter I have not yet received, but I am sure I shall enjoy reading it when it comes. and especially the reference to Mr. Sun.

From all I have heard of Mr. Sun, not only from you but from others, and from the wonderful letters he has written me from time to time, I can't believe that your estimate of his character is a bit overdrawn. It is my hope that some day I may have the pleasure of meeting him and more intimately acquainted.

I am especially pleased to hear that Arthur is doing something that appears to you to be a "real job". Frankly, I have had some misgivings as to the value a good many of these Chinese boys derive from their education and stay in America, and it is mighty reassuring to that some, at least, are buckling down and really going to work on their return to their home land.

Both Charlie and Tom seem to be doing very well at Amherst and Middlebury Colleges, respectively, the latter much better than I had anticipated. Mary, on the other hand, has been having a hard struggle at Almira College and has been dissatisfied and unhappy there from the start. She has begged me for some time to persuade her father to let her take a regular nurse training course and give up the ordinary college course in which she finds little interest and on which she makes very slow progress. In connection with its Medical School ,Yale University now has a regular course for the training of nurses, and since I think Mary has unquestionably talents in that line, I have finally secured Mr. Sun’s consent to such an arrangement, though evidently the consent was given very reluctantly. I may be wrong, but it does seem too bad if Mary really wishes to train for some useful service in the world that she should not have this opportunity, and I can’t quite see what real advantage to her a mere college degree would be, though I realize that our Chinese friends rate it pretty high and generally without, regard to what it actually signifies. Anyway, at the moment Mary and I are negotiating with the Yale authorities to see whether the transfer can satisfactorily be made. It has been my thought that Mary might fit herself to fill a position later of superintendent of a hospital or something of that kind, a position of real importance from an American viewpoint, though perhaps not quite that through Chinese eyes.

Again thanking you most warmly for your friendly letter and trusting that you and your good wife are weathering all the political and other storms that seem to be beating all over China in these days, believe me with kindest personal regards

Very sincerely yours,

I have your interesting letter of September 5 with the enclosures mentioned, and am forwarding a copy of Mr. Sun's letter to me to Charlie Sun at his Columbia address. I shall also, as I have already done, do my best to help Charlie get over his natural disappointment at the sudden and unexpected change in his prospects. From the tone of his letters to me, I feel that the boy has been exceptionally fine and manly in the whole matter, something which I should naturally expect from him, for he has proved about the most satisfactory Chinese boy with whom it has ever been my privilege to deal.

That you write me of Mr. Sun, Sr., is not surprising. All of my friends, like myself, who have seen his photograph, which I fortunately possess, have been immensely impressed with the wonderful combination of sweetness and strength which his face reveals. He must be an unusual man, and I hope that his health and strength will long be spared so that his countrymen may continue profit by his devoted and unselfish labors in their behalf.

William J • Berlin, Secretary
Amherst College
Amherst, Mass.

My dear Mr. Newlin:

Thank you for your letter about Tsai. The boy has been my personal ward since he has been in this country and I have a very genuine interest in his problem, which is a little different from the problems of the other Chinese boys with whom I have dealt; indeed I have never felt quite satisfied that I understood him thoroughly, and those who have met him intimately have not always agreed in their estimates. Tsai’s two brothers were with us a few years ago and did exceptionally well in their work. Young Tsai enjoys much the same kind of popularity with his mates that his brothers Lid, for all of these boys have adapted themselves to the American ways and ideas much more than have most of their Chinese friends. The main difficulty with this youngest member of the family is that he has been too popular. He has also suffered from physical limitations which have slightly encroached on his intellectual activities arid progress.

Anyway this boy’s record in his studies has been a bit irregular. On two different occasions I decided to sever the Andover connection and give him elsewhere the individual attention which he seemed to need. Last year he went to my brother’s school in Mount Vernon, and with the understanding that he was to make college in the fall. I urged this strongly because I believed he needed an incentive to keep him hard at it. This summer my brother told me that he felt that I was expecting too much and that the boy really needed another year of preparation. This report was also confirmed by the men who worked with him during the summer months at Long Lake Lodge, one of the best of the summer tutoring camps. Consequently I am wondering whether it may not be a mistake to encourage the boy to attempt the Amherst work, even though he succeeds in gaining a technical admission.

Of course it is for you to determine the wisdom of acting favorably on Tsai's application. I am giving you the facts frankly, however, so that you may know, so far as possible, the kind of problem with which we are dealing. If he can get in and can hold the pace, I very much hope that he will go ahead; on the other hand, I should dislike exceedingly to have him enter and then have him drop out during the course.

Tsai is a most attractive and likable fellow, as you will no doubt discover. He is a bit weak in his will power and hasn't the stability and self-control which are generally such prominent characteristics in his fellow countrymen.

With every good wish to you for the year just opening, believe me always

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr.Newlin:

I took the liberty of settling your letter of June 22nd to Mr. K. F. Tsai, the Chinese boy about whom I wrote Etsy recently. His reply is enolosed. If you have anything further to suggest to the boy by which he will be able to meet the Amherst requirements, please write him direct, ae I am leaving for the woods in the morning. His address for the summer is Long Lake Lodge, North Bridgton, Maine.

With personal regards and best wishes for a restful summer after the strain of recent weeks, believe me

Faithfully yours,
