I do not know just what your relations are with Kong Y. Tu but it seems useless for him to continue here after this year. He does not seem to be particularly interested in his studies and his grades are poor. His chief interest seems to be in playing tennis.
It seems to me that he might just as well return to China, although I do not know all of the facts in his case and am merely advising you as to the situation here so that you may have some facts which may assist you in making any decisions that you may be called upon to make.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I have received your letter asking for a report on the work which K. Y. Tu is doing. He is getting along fairly well, but not sufficiently well to enable us to consider him at present college material. His grades average about a "C". I believe he is capable of doing better work than he is now producing, but his chief interest is apparently not in his studies but in athletics.

I think possibly a letter from you to this young man might help considerably. He is taking only four subjects with us, namely: English III, Algebra II, French I, and Ancient History. If he is college material, he should be doing "B" work in all of them.

We would not expect to be able to get him ready for college entrance in less than two years, and quite likely a longer period than that would be needed.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Liang:

Let me congratulate you most heartily for the splendid results you have obtained concerning the flood relief campaign in your locality. It is indeed encouraging to see the way you have responded to the call and can tell you that we are very proud of the Andover spirit. Your pledge of 91. dollars among six members places you at the top per capita among all the clubs that have reported so far. We hope that your splendid example will be copied by others.

We have so far raised about five hundred dollars (not collected) and expect to arrive at the point of a thousand when we close up.

Wishing you great success, I am,

Very faithfully yours

                <text>Secretary, Chinese Students’ Club,
My dear Mr.T.K.Liang

In view of the devastating flood going on in North China, we students in this country have a deep obligation to take a part in its relief. The Eastern Section of the Alliance has just organized a special relief committee to undertake the task of raising funds to relieve the sufferers. As Chairman of the Eastern Section I wish to ask for the cooperation of your Club in furthering this cause. Will you at once start a campaign in your locality to raise as much as you can from (1) our students, (2) our businessmen in various pursuits and (3) our American friends.

It is needless for me to say that the gravity of the situation requires immediate and whole-hearted support from every one of us. I have no doubt that your response will be both spontaneous and generous. It is most gratifying to know that one day’s campaign in Columbia University has already brought some two hundred dollars.

Regarding the matter of organization, I leave it to your Club Executives or Club as a whole. Allow me, however, to suggest that with the Club Executives as the central organizing force, you arrange several groups of men or women to solicit contributions and pledges among our students, countrymen in business and American friends. To carry out the plan, every one must do his or her bit.

Enclosed please find a list of facts concerning the flood and the needs which may be distributed for your campaign. For further information please refer to the Flood Relief Committee Secretary or myself. You are at liberty in using your best judgment to raise funds.

The campaign will be closed by December 10th when all individual pledges must be made. The Treasurer of your Club, or any one duly appointed or elected by your Club to take charge of the money collected, shall turn over the funds raised to the Flood Relief Committee Treasurer, Mr. Poling Chang, Livinsston Hall, Columbia University, New York City, by December 11th or earlier. Please make all checks payable to Mr. Poling Chang. Kindly keep me informed of your plahwfor raising funds and your progress in the campaign.

Wishing you great success, I am
Faithfully yours

Chairman, Eastern Section, C.S.A

Facts about the flood.

Over 120,000 square lis of territory in Chihli, Shantung and Honan provinces have been flooded, with Tientsin probably the worst sufferer.

All crops in the flooded territory have been destroyed with no prospect for cultivation now for the crops in next spring.

Several millions of people have no homes, property and food for the present, winter and next spring.

The Chinese Government has given §300.000 Mex. for immediate relief.

The American Red Cross Society has forwarded §120.000 gold to Peking for the same purpose.

Different committees as well as individuals are giving as much as they can in China, particularly in Tientsin.

Chinese students in Columbia have already raised over §200 in one day.

In spite of the foregoing aids, the needs are great for the present and even greater in the cold winter and cropless spring.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Boston, Mass.

Dear Sir:-

I wish to thank you for the copy of the records made by candidates from this school for admission to the Institute. I note that Tsai, one of our Chinese boys, is in trouble because of the lack of a testimonial for his Geometry. The boy did very well on the theorems but not so well on the application of them, and as he did not pass his course in the spring term his instructor, who is inclined to regard a recommendation as a guarantee denied him one. If his record on your examination seems to warrant his being credited with that subject, we should be perfectly willing to have him accepted. He has been a faithful student with us. His brother has made an exceptionally fine record at Cornell, and I think this boy is capable of equal attainment. In view of the boy’s being a foreigner, we should be glad to see any favor in the way of entrance examinations extended to him which your Committee on Admissions sees fit to grant.

Very truly yours.

Registrar

Dr. Alfred R. Stearns
Phillips Academy
Andover, Mass.

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I received a copy of the Phillips bulletin two days ago and I was very much pleased to read about the interesting facts of the old school. I hope everything is getting along nicely and with many brighter prospects.

I was at Dr. Zelie's church this morning and learned of your presence among us on the coming Sunday. Immediately my thoughts turned to the deep interest that you always have to the Chinese students and I know you will be glad to meet some of them now studying at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. But if these were well, I could ask the fellows to come to the church to shake hands with you. On the contrary, we have at present bigger problems to face and, therefore, are eager to hear some advices with regard to our presence among the American and our attitudes to each other, to the understanding of the Church and Christian force, and subjects of like character. Being one who wants to see a better relation and understanding of the east and the west, I have been most anxious to set our group of Chinese students, which is, unfortunately, rather deadly, in working. I was overjoyed to hear of your coming and I told of it to a few friends of mine, We felt sure that you can help us and we would like to have you talk to us when you come, privately. Will you undertake to do so when you come, if you can spare an hour or so?

As I do not know the time of your arrival and how long do you expect to stay in Troy, may I ask you to let me know about your plans, so if you can spend an hour with us we can make arrangements of the time and the place of our gathering. There are twenty one Chinese students at R.P.I, at present. Among them, we have about ten Christians.

I am getting along awfully well during these days. I passed all my first term work and am now starting on several new courses. Bright and sunshiny afternoons tell me that spring is coming soon.

I hope all the boys are in good condition. Looking forward to see you at Troy,

I am,
Yours most respectfully
