<text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I hope that you have received Mr. M. T. Liang’s letter sent you about a week ago, in which he besought on my behalf your favour to undertake the care of my three sons, namely

Arthur K. I. Sun ( age 20 )
Charles K. H. Sun ( " 13 )
Thomas K. J. Sun (" 12 )
and my daughter
Mary S. L. Sun ( " 15 )

during their stay in the States to pursue their studies. In view of your letter to Mr. Liang dated 21st. June last, we were afraid that the postal advice sent to you regarding their arrival at Andover might be too late for you to make adequate arrangements for them to enter suitable schools and to select desirable families for them to live in, therefore I have requested Mr. Liang to cable you to that effect. As I am told by my American and Chinese friends how obliging you have always been and how keenly you wish to see our Chinese boys and girls properly educated, I feel confident That I can rely upon your kind assistance in this matter.

The photos of my children have been sent to you by Mr. Liang. I now enclose the following.

1.	A certificate (copy) of Tsing-hua College Peking issued to Arthur K. I. Sun.
2.	A copy of a certificate issued to Mary S. L. Sun by St. Joseph’s School at Tientsin.
3. 4 lists of books studied or being studied by Arthur K. I . Sun, Charles K.H. Sun and Thomas Z.J. Sun. from which I hope you will be able to form an opinion as to what grades of schools they may enter.

Arthur has just finished his Sophomore year in Tsing-hua College, Peking. After he has completed his high school course in two years or so, he expects to join M.I.T. to learn Civil engineering provided you think that profession will suit him. As regards the other two boys and the girl, it will be many years before they finish their courses in high school and I leave the matter entirely to your decision as to what will suit them best in view of their qualifications.

For these youngsters, I feel that the homes in which they are to live in are to be more carefully considered than the schools. I wish that they would be placed in those thorough Christian homes in which the parents are people of the highest culture and in a position to give my children every advantage that they, as growing boys and girl, ought to have. Be kind enough to arrange with your Christian friends who are willing to receive my Children as their own. My friend, Mr. A.G.. Robinson, a secretary of Young Men Christian Association here who is now in America and knows my children, entertains the same opinion that the home should be the first consideration for the youngsters. He and my other friends, Mr. Pyke and Mr. Stanley, may call upon you in regard to the selection of good Christian homes, but they understand that you being the guardian of my children will have the sole authority to decide the matter. If it is not possible for all four children to go into one family, they may be divided into two groups, Arthur and Charles into one, Thomas and Mary into another.

Arthur has already been baptized. I wish that all of them could be induced to attend Church services regularly and turn to be true Christians. They are also to be constantly advised about their selection of friends.

I am remitting to you through the First National Bank of Boston, Boston $4000.- to defray all expenses of my four children including clothing and other necessaries and some allowance to each for petties. Further remittance will follow. I don't want them to acquire an extravagant habit and they have to be satisfied with what you think it is proper for them. I have given to each of them $300.- to pay for their miscellaneous and travelling expenses from China to Andover, with exception of passage tickets per "Nanking" and they have been ordered to render you an account and to turn the balance on hand to you.

Before closing, I wish to express how glad I feel, through the kind recommendation of Mr. Liang, to have my children placed into your good hands, such as I have been longing to see, but words fail to show my appreciation and gratitude for all the trouble you will take on my behalf. I hope that all of them will prove themselves to be worthy of your good care.

Kindest regards,

Yours sincerely,

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I take the liberty to advise the sailing of 5 Chinese boys and 1 girl viz:-

Author K. I. Sun	( age 20 )
Charles K. H. Sun	(age 13 )
Thomas K. J. Sun	( age 12 )
Miss Mary Sun	( age 15 )
Quincy Q. S. Sheh	( age 16 ) and
Frank O.F. Lin	( age 17 )

on 23rd August next from Shanghai by s/s Nanking which is due at San Francisco on 25th. September

These youngsters are the children of some of our prominent citizens here whose fathers desire me to place them entirely in your charge, the acceptance of which, I need hardly assure you, would very deeply appreciated by all concerned. If, on the other hand, pressure of work would not permit you to undertake the guardianship of them, any one you may appoint in this behalf would equally oblige us here. As stated above, these youngsters are timed to arrive at San Francisco on 15th. September in company of a large batch (80) of Students from our Tsing-hua College. According to the present arrangement come to, they are to stop over at San Francisco for 3 or 4 days when they would rail over to Chicago and there separate, going to the different schools that have assigned them. The children of my friends referred to will join the party destined for Boston which they expect to reach on or about 25th. September and on arriving there, will wire you the date and time of their arrival at Andorver [sic] when, if convenient to you, some one may be sent to the station to take charge of them. This is thought advisable here as these youngsters have never before been away from China, all of these young people have had some years of English schooling here but how far advanced they are and what schools they should enter you would be the best to form an opinion after seeing them and knowing the courses they have been through.

They may be put into any institution you may think best to assign them and if they have to take board and lodging outside of their schools it is the wish of their parents here that they join some Christian homes and be given a training that would tend to strengthen their character, both morally and intellectually. Although they are from well-to-do families, the people desire them to practice economy and thrift as American boys are enjoined upon to do at all times.

Briefly, as they are handed over to you, your authority over them, will be undivided in every respect. Friends from China may occasionally visit them during their sojourn in the States but any suggestion or advice which these friends may proffer will have effect only upon your approval.

After the completion of their preparatory course they may enter any college or Scientific institution as you may select for them after learning the profession for which they are best fitted. On this, their parents anticipate in due time suggestions from you.

The parents of these young people will write you themselves, on the departure of their children enclosing drafts which will be sent along with them. The amount so sent will suffice for their 6 months expenses, with further remittances following to meet their requirements.

To minimize correspondence in respect of these youngsters, it is suggested that you only communicate with Mr. Chang Pah Lung, Russo-Asiatic Bank, Tientsin, China, when he would attend to all matters pertaining to them at this end. This Mr. Chang Pah Lung, you will recollect, is also to have his boy, Chang Shao Ling in your charge about which I wrote you about 2 months ago.

Now Dr, Stearns, the parents of these children are fully aware of the work they are imposing upon you by asking you to take charge of them during their educational course in America and the reason for their taking this liberty is the perfect assurance that with them in your hands they would be best moulded for their future usefulness. I therefore, bespeak for them the favor of your kind offices.

With very kind regards to your goodself, Miss Clement and the children.

Yours very truly,

P. S.

After the closing of the letter, the parents of the children desire me to reiterate that they most fervently wish that their children, at least the younger ones and in particular the girl, be put at first in some Christian families to enable them to learn and be early impressed with the ways of American home life which they so much admire. However, whatever you may decide for their best will have their entire approval here.

                <text>Dear Uncle Ned:

Here is a chance for you to do a very real favor to me and to a Tientsin friend of mine. I think you may be in a position to do it, perhaps not. Do you have any connections now, old or new, in Andover? Is your friend Mr Shipman there still?

The point is this. My friend Mr C.Y. Sun, a business man, is sending five of his children - and two other boys - to America for study; and he wishes if possible to place them in good homes. They are all going to Andover, at least for a start, to Phillips Academy, and the girls to Abbott. It is quite probable the boys may change to more technical schools later. He sends them all to be in the care of Principal Stearns of the Academy as a sort of guardian. Any arrangement should be made in consultation with him. But the thought is, that perhaps Dr Stearns may not be able, at the start, to give these very "Freshmen" any individual attention; they would just be herded in dormitories. Whereas an outside party might be able to find places in private homes in Andover, and make a suitable arrangement, to which Dr Stearns would readily assent. Do you know him? I suppose you must.

Here are the	names of the party:

	Approx.Age

Arthur K.I. Sun	20
Charles K.H. Sun	12
Frank C.F. Lin	16	Sons of friends
Quincy Q.S. She	16	of Mr Sun.
Tom K.J. Sun	11
Mary P.L. Sun	15
Lucy S.L. Sun	11

The first four will leave Shanghai, Aug 23rd, on the "Nanking Maru". The other three will sail at about the same time, if passage can be secured. All will go across the continent without delay, so as to reach Andover about the time school opens.

Do you think this thing can be done, that Mr Sun wants? To land seven Chinese children on one family, is of course almost out of the question. To place them in two families in Andover, may be very difficult. There are problems of service, or of the lack of it. And then, as we know, there are homes and homes, even among good Christian people, I am warning Mr Sun of all these uncertainties.

But he is dead right in his main thought, that the training of Christian homes will mean more to these boys and girls "schooling." I very much hope they will get Mr Sun wants the children kept in order. He wants them not to acquire extravagant habits. There will be plenty of money for all necessary expenses. They have had some church connections here, and he wants them to have religious training. He is not himself a Christian, by profession.

I feel sure you will do something in this matter, if you can. Please drop me a line as to possibilities. I will inform you if there are further developments.

Yours as ever,

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns :

My friend Mr. C.Y. Sun, a prominent retired business man of Tientsin, is sending two of his sons and two of the sons of friends of his to America this summer to enter them at Phillips Academy. He has asked me to suggest some one whom I could commend to his as a guardian for the boys, and I at once thought of you, inasmuch as I knew of your great interest in all young students, and especially in the boys who come overseas to study in America.

There are a number of matters which Mr. Sun wishes me to take up with you in this connection, and I shall try to state them as clearly and briefly as possible. First let me give you the names of the boys with the dates of their births:

Sun Huang I 1900
Ling Cheng Fan 1904
Sheh, Quincy Sun 1905
Kwang Hua 1907

As you will at once observe, the oldest and the youngest are the sons of Mr. Sun. The third boy mentioned already has an English name, the others have not as yet adopted any.

The fathers of these fine boys are all anxious for them to have a thorough Christian training, and to that end are very anxious to have the boys placed in Christian homes for the first years of their stay in America, should that prove feasible. In such homes they will as nowhere else learn to understand the life and principles of those who have for generations been heirs of the Christian tradition. It is the desire of these wise fathers that the boys be taken to Church regularly and given every opportunity to see and understand the normal Church life of America.

Similarly, the fathers are anxious to have the boys attend the Summer Conferences of the Y.M.C.A. and the gatherings held by the Chinese Christian Student Association each summer.

Money matters are to be in your hands, and the boys are directed to make monthly statements which you will please kindly sign and send at intervals to Mr. Sun here in Tientsin.

Among the things which Mr. Sun also specifically mentioned to me is the desire that the boys shall have training in sports and in etiquette, so that courage and gentlemanliness will be instilled into their lives thruout their stay in America.

The future study of the boys is not determined except in the case of the oldest, Sun Kuan I. He wishes to go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to study civil engineering. But I have urged Mr. Sun to let him take two years of academic work in some small college before entering Tech, and Mr. Sun directs that the matter be left with you for decision in the light of the circumstances later on.

For the other boys, Mr. Sun wishes you to choose for them from the four following institutions: Amherst, Cornell, Harvard, Yale.

I have quite strongly urged their going to Amherst, for reasons that you will of course appreciate, but when the time comes for them to enter college there may be reasons why you deem wise some other choice among those here indicated as possibilities.

Altho I know how busy you are and how many things you are called upon to do, I feel sure that you will gladly undertake this personal responsibility for these Chinese lads who are starting out on the great adventure. With such splendid homes as those from which they come to give them a start, their lives are full of promise for this great land in which the need of qualified leadership is greater than perhaps in any other at this time.
I recall with pleasure and enthusiasm the few times that I have seen you in Amherst, and hope that when I next return to America I can see you in Andover or Amherst and get better acquainted with the great work you are doing for boys of the homeland as well as boys from sister Republics.

Yours cordially in Amherst</text>

                <text>Dear Doctor Stearns:

Since seeing you I have had one or two visits with Arthur Sun and have made several inquiries regarding a suitable home for Mary when she goes to Elmira. My sister has friends there and I met some ladies at the shore this summer who are going to make inquiries for me on their return to Syracuse. Within a few days now I hope to get up there and run over to Elmira to definitely select this home for Mary, provided the verbal understanding we had in June still holds good.

I believe you were very willing to entrust to me the matter of the selection. As my mother and sister are living at Cortland, New York, not far from Elmira, this will be fairly easy for me to arrange. I should like, however, such information from you as would help in finding the most congenial and helpful place for Mary. You probably know, too, by this time how she has come on with her summer’s work and just when she will need to go to Elmira for such entrance preliminaries as may be necessary. An early reply from you in regard to these matters will be much appreciated.

During my brief visit in Boston, besides having a good chat with Arthur, I also got a glimpse of Charlie. He certainly fulfilled the expectations I had for him after conversation with you. Frank Lin also impressed me as doing very well. Quincy Sheh I saw at the station in Brunswick as we went through. He seemed to be in good health and quite his usual complacent self. I am sorry to have missed seeing Mary and Tom. The latter, I presume, will proceed to Middlebury as you arranged.

In my chat with Arthur, I got the idea that he felt somewhat handicapped in his relations with his sister Mary. He seemed to want very much to have opportunity for freer conversation. I do not know what limitations Miss Clemons felt were best with regard to Mary, so I am not in a position to make any suggestion other than to give you a tip that he would appreciate a freer opportunity for chats with his sister. You will not misunderstand I hope my "butting in" with a suggestion of this sort.

I understand from Mr. Sun that Mary’s allowance is approximately $2,000 per year. I presume in making arrangements for her home expense in Elmira that I could depend on this as a maximum, deducting, of course, necessary college and other personal expense. I should appreciate suggestions from you as to what would be reasonable to allow for such accommodations as you think she ought to have. Very likely you have budgeted her allowance and might give me some of those items.

This letter will probably reach you in your busiest season and I hesitate to ask for an immediate reply. However, the earlier I hear from you the easier it would be to plan my trip to Elmira.

Sincerely

AGR:GEW
