My dear Mr. Kwong

Thank you for your prompt reply to my letter of recent date. I am inclosing herewith check for $20 to cover the amount of money advanced by you to Mr. Chow. Kindly sign and return the accompanying receipt.

Chow has made a bad failure of his work here I deeply regret to say, and in accordance with his father's instructions I am compelled to arrange for him to return to China. If I can make satisfactory arrangements for him for the next few weeks I would much prefer to have him go with Mr. Seetoo, one of our old boys now at Technology, and a thoroughly reliable fellow. Chow has asked permission to visit in New York, but in view of my limited knowledge of the friends whom he desires to visit, and the absolute necessity forced on me of keeping his expenses at the very lowest possible figure, I am not clear that it is wise for me to grant this request. Do I understand that Chow stayed with you during his recent visit to New York? If so, would it be wise and agreeable to you to have him stay with you during the next few weeks? I have no desire to press the point, but merely wish to know what possibilities are available, so that I can plan his schedule accordingly.

I had a glimpse of S.S. Kwan last week when he ran out to Andover and spent the night at my house. I saw quite a little of him when I was in China two years ago, and it was a real pleasure to welcome him back here.

With kind personal regards, believe me,

Very sincerely yours,

Dear sir:

I enclose herewith a report of your boy’s work during the past term. There have been some evidences of late of improvement, though the deficiencies that remain, notably that in Latin, are disappointing, Under the circumstance we have deemed it fair to continue the period of the boy's probation in the hope that the improvement noted may grow more goes on, and that at a comparatively early date we may feel justified in releasing the boy wholly from probation.

I am sorry to have to advise you that your boy’s work of late has been very unsatisfactory to us, and that as a result we have found it necessary to place him on a strict probation for the balance of the term. During that period we shall watch his work carefully, and unless we are able to note a very marked improvement, we shall be obliged to ask his withdrawal from the school. I earnestly hope that this last course may not be forced upon us, and that the boy himself, appreciating the danger which confronts him, will devote himself from now on earnestly to meeting the requirements imposed upon him. If he is willing to do this, there is no reason why our later reports to you should not be of a much more satisfactory nature.

Very truly yours.

We have been given to understand that you are planning to enter Phillips Academy this coming fall. Our records, however, do not show that you filled a formal application for admission, and I am enclosing herewith, therefore, a blank for this purpose. May I ask you kindly to fill out and return to me at once the enclosed blank? If possible, your testimonial letters should be sent at the same time.

Dear Sir:

It is disappointing to me to have to advise you that your boy’s work, which at times has been of an excellent quality, has been so unsettled and week of late as to lead us to deem it wise to withdraw from him when he returns next fall the regular privileges of the school in the way of excuses. John has so clearly shown his ability to maintain a satisfactory standing that the failures recorded on the enclosed report must be regarded as clearly unnecessary. I earnestly hope that he will apply himself in the future to meet more diligently all of the requirements of the school, and to attain a standard of work that will bring only satisfaction to himself and his friends.

Very truly yours,

Mr. Joseph Thebaud
Seattle, Wash.

My dear Sir:-

I have read with interest your letter of the 17th inst. received yesterday. I shall be glad to offer you such advice and help as I can, though I question how far my opinions may prove of value to you.

For the past three or four years we have had from six to ten Chinese students here each year. Consequently I have become somewhat familiar with their ways and their behavior under our American school conditions. Some of these boys have done exceptionally well. Almost without exception they have proved themselves unusually courteous and gentlemanly in their relations with us, and in the main have studied faithfully. I have noted, however, a growing tendency to extravagances, especially in the matter of clothes, and this tendency has disturbed me a good deal. I am inclined to think, too, that this year at least there have been too many of these boys here for their own good. They have found it too easy to get together and make use of their own language to the detriment of their English, and on the whole they seem to have been not quite so earnest and studious this year. I should not like to increase the size of the delegation now in Andover, and hence I do not feel justified in recommending this school for your friends just now.

I know the recent Chinese minister, whom I know intimately, and who was himself formerly a student in this school, felt very strongly that it was unwise to get too many of these boys together in one place.

[sentences illegible]

Trusting that you will feel free to advise me if I can be of farther service to you in this matter, believe me.

Very truly yours,
