I want to play fair with you and everybody concerned, and, as I told you, I am perfectly willing and have been for a long time that your Abbot friends should visit you on the customary visiting days. I believe some of them have done so during this present week- That, however, is a different matter from the proposed visit to Abbot. In view of the attitude and actions of some of the Abbot teachers and authorities who, knowing nothing whatever of my correspondence with your- father, undertook to dictate the course you were to pursue and, in consequence, made the whole situation exceedingly uncomfortable and hard for me, forcing even a trip to Washington for consultation with your Minister there, and in view of the further fact that, since the truth of the matter became known to them, there has been no single word of apology or indication of such, I cannot in self-respect sanction such a visit as proposed. If it seemed best for you to leave Whittier for the week-end, I should be glad enough to have you come to the house and invite your friends to see you there. As it is, I do not think you ought to leave school for the week-end in question. In order to find out the exact situation, I telephoned Mrs. Russell and found that not more than half the school is to be away. This, I understand, is to be a general week-end for as many as desire it in order to avoid absenses scattered through the term. As you are already planning to invest one week-end in a trip to Bowdoin, you will be as well off as the other girls without taking this week-end. Further, I am sure that some worth while school work can be done if you stay, and you must remember that it is still an open question whether you are going to have enough work on hand to gain admission to college in the fall. My experience with the Chinese during the past few years leads me to feel that we shall be able to make wholly satisfactory arrangements for your friend, Mr. Lo. These boys are most attractive fellows, and it is a great pleasure to work with them. We find them among our very best students, always courteous, deferential, and thoroughly gentlemanly. The work of these boys has invariably been based on the entrance requirements of the best scientific schools of the East. I infer that this would be the course which Mr. Lo would desire to follow. My brother happened to be in Andover about a week ago, and I talked over with him the possibility of looking after the Chinese boys from California, for I understand from Mr. Lo’s letter that a friend of his was to accompany him. My brother’s school closes the latter part of June, but as he plans to be there during the summer, he tells me that he would be willing to keep the boys there and work with them until the fall. Ordinarily he has been connected with a summer camp where individual work of this kind is done. As my brother is thoroughly familiar with our requirements here, I think he will be able to cover the ground in a satisfactory way. His school is located at Mount Vernon, New Hampshire, a short distance from Nashua. I will ask him [illegible] to correspond with you about the cost, since I do not know just what his charges would be for the entire summer work. The ordinary charges of the school are reasonable, below, in fact, those charged by most schools of this kind. I will ask my brother to send you full particulars. I am taking the liberty of forwarding this letter to my brother at Mt.Vernon, in order that he may fully appreciate the boy’s situation and peculiar needs. I am going to suggest to my brother that he brings the boy down here from time to time during the spring term, in order that he may make the acquaintance of the seven Chinese boys now in the school. I think such a course would help him to overcome his homesickness and loneliness. So far as my experience goes, there is no other school outside of Andover, with the possible exception of Phillips Exeter at Exeter, New Hampshire, which offers a boy of limited means so good an opportunity to secure an education at a minimum cost. Our Trustees last year passed a special vote throwing open our scholarship funds to Chinese students on the same basis that they are open to boys of our own nationality. There is no reason, therefore, why a Chinese boyy should not be able, as so many other boys have been, to make him XX through the school at a very slight expense. I am sorry that Mr. Lo’s friend, Mr.Li, did not decide to combine forces. Of the Chinese boys now in the school two bear the name of Li, one coming from Ningpo and the other Tientsin. Both are exceedingly bright and reliable fellows.
