Dear Dr. Stearns:

I am sorry that I haven't written you so long. I have been very busy writing papers and working on the district. I have two more weeks of district work to go. I will be glad when it is over although I enjoy it. The weather is getting too hot to work around the streets and riding on the trolley from one end of town to another. And sometimes I get car-sick then I have to get off.

At present I am taking care of Italian patients mostly. They speak very little English or none and I don't speak Italian. I have the loveliest trying make them understand by moving my hands & what Italian I learned from them. So far we get along pretty well, they haven't yet discouraged me. All my instructions were carried out so far.

I have four weeks of vacation in July. A friend of mine has invited me to spend it in Ithaca N.Y. with her. I said like to go. Do you have any objections about my going? I shall be paying my own expense coming & going etc. Please let me know at your convenience.

Sincerely yours,

                <text>Dear Mary:

Thank you for your good letter of May 13. I am immensely interested in hearing of your work among the foreigners. It is a great experience, and you ought to be ready for about anything when you get back to China and work among your own people. From the fate at which they seem to be wounding each other over there, at present, you ought to have a lot to do. I do hope that the day may speedily come when these warring factions will stop their nonsense. and get down to the main task of straightening out China's troubles and putting the country soundly on its feet.

You are certainly old enough to make your own decisions now-a-days, and I am perfectly willing to have you go to Ithaca for your summer vacation if that is your preference. It sounds like a good proposition to me.

With all best wishes, believe me

Dear Dr. Stearns:

Thank you, Sir, most kindly for your nice letter of April 14th, in which you were good enough to inform me that the piece of jade has reached you in safety. Both Minister Sze and I are glad that you have finally received it in good condition. As you have already notified my father of its receipt, I shall not do so again.

I should feel very much obliged if you would send me the information as to the date of Mary’s graduation. My father made mention of his intention of having Mary and Tom coming home together but did not say when. I for my part really do not know just what he meant, smoothly

My work in the office is coming along and I am no longer as lonesome as before, having now a few friends with whom I dine and have chats every evening. Last Saturday I moved from where I lived when you and Miss Clemons were here to a house located right next street. Here the room is much more elegantly furnished and the rent is also lower. I find this place on the whole very much more respectable, comfortable, and, may I say, wholesome than the former place; although the lack of running water annoys me a great deal. However, comfortable and satisfied as I am, I still don’t seem to be able to adapt myself to London, which never can be like home to me, and I wish all the time that I would go to somewhere else. It’s funny how I am unable to get used to England as I did America.

I know, Sir, you are a thousand times busier than I am, but when you have time, please remember that I shall love to hear from you.

With best regards,

Sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Charlie:

I have your interesting letter of May 9.

I have learned from Mary's dean that graduation for Mary will not take place until a year from this June. If I recall aright, Mary will actually complete her work a few weeks in advance of that time, but the authorities are very anxious to have her remain until the formal graduation exercises which take place later.

Whether Mary and Tom are to go back home together, I do not know. Nothing has been said to me definitely by your father on this point as yet. Tom seems to be a bit upset to know what he is to do, especially for this summer, though he has signed up at Yale for some graduate work next year.

I don't wonder that you can't get enthusiastic about London, though perhaps spring and summer will clear away some of the fog and murk which made it seem to me, at least, a terribly depressing place during the few weeks I was there last winter. The good clear American skies and the snappier and more bracing air certainly appeal to me more strongly than anything London furnished me. Still we have to get accustomed to all sorts of conditions of weather and surroundings if we are to fill our places and do our proper work in the world. While I do not think for a moment that you will settle permanently in London for your life's job, I am sure that you can do a good work there while you stay, and I believe that you will gradually come to find the place and surroundings increasingly congenial. I hope so, anyway.

With all good wishes, believe me

Ever sincerely yours, </text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

At this time each year, I am usually lost at sea as to where I should go during the summer. This year, I am even more so, Originally I planned to travel some the first part of the summer and very extensively toward august. But since there is no car at my disposal this summer, I had to abandon the idea. Now I am confronted with something new.

I usually go to summer school during the summer. But this summer I am not very anxious to do so. It may be that I have been to summer school three sumers [sic] while I was in school trying to catch up, and two summers while I am in college trying to get ahead. I think I have enough of it. What I like to do this summer is to go where I please. But there are other things to consider. I have to have French—a reading knowledge--by a year from this coming fall. I have been thinking of staying here for the French School. For that purpose I went to see the Dean of the school, and he told me that what they do mostly during the summer is to get a conversational knowledge rather than reading knowledge. So it is rather impractical to come to Middelbury [sic]. Mary asked several time to go to Ithaca with her and spend the summer with her. Ithaca may be a nice place, but there is nothing to offer me in the line of what I want. I also have thought of going to New York again, and stay at the International House and take lessons from a real Frenchman, and hope in that way to get a reading knowledge. I can not decide what I will do. I don’t like the city, especially during the summer, but it is the most practical. In this respect I seek your advise.

But I do wish I can travel this summer though. I received a letter from Mary a few days ago, and she seemed to be rather anxious about the car also. I have not written to her and tell her the consequences as yet.

One other thing that bothers me. In case if I do go to summer school, what will I do between the time after graduation and the time summer school starts? There are about six weeks there, and I surely can not pass those six weeks just sitting around. I have to do something. And furthermore what am to do during the time after summer school and before the regular session starts at Yale? There are again about six weeks there, and surely I do not want to sit around for twelve weeks. The result in which case will probably be that in the end I will be sitting in an insaned [sic] hospital. Please advise me concerning what I shall do. I am in such a desparate [sic] mood, I am ready to take most offers. This year is different for me. I am graduating this June, and therefore I can not stay in the Fraternity House after college closes as I have been doing in the past.

Can’t you see some way clear so that a car will be possible? It will help the situation a lot.

I have been busy trying to put out another issue of the "Circle", our official chapter publication. It has been rather hard until recently when I received some help from some of the brothers. I hope to have the paper in press to-morrow, and it probably come out Monday or Tuesday.

Please consider my situation and advice [sic] me accordingly.

Sincerely yours</text>

                <text>Dear Tom:

I have read with interest your letter just received.

Frankly, I am sure that your father would not be at all enthusiastic about a summer spent wholly in traveling about, valuable as it would unquestionably be for you to see same thing of this big country. Further, I can’t believe that a car is necessary merely to cover the periods between the close of college and a summer school session and the close of that session and the opening of the next college year, “the world has changed mightily if this is true, and while I know that it has changed some, I am sure that it has not changed to quite that extent as yet. After all, the problem of the intervening periods between the closing of a college year and the regular summer session in camp or school and the intervening period which must be faced again before college opens in the fall is a problem which has been with you and all the other Chinese ever since you first came to this country. More than that, it is a problem which faces a great many other boys as well, and I am not aware that the possession of a car has been found to be the only or even common solution.

But I don't want to be unfair at all in this matter, nor do I feel competent to advise you on the basis alone of the reports contained in your letter. It looks as if we ought to sit down together some time and talk things out face to face, and if you can get down here some time just before or just after graduation. I think we can probably work out a satisfactory program.

Very sincerely yours, </text>

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I am sending you an itemized account of my expenditures to date. I hope that it will be satisfactory. I need some more money at this time as in other years. The amount will be the same, $500.00.

As you know, summer is always a problem for me. I have no home to go to, and I have to exist on "room and board". I am going to New York after graduation till summer school anyway. And then I want to know what to do.

If you will send me the money some time this week, I will appreciate it very much, because there are several things which I want to do, and at present I have no money to do them with. So if I can have the money by this week, it will be more than appreciated.

I plan to come to Andover to have a talk with you concerning several things. They are of most importance to me, and I can not afford to let them slip by. One of which is my situation, that is to say how much Americanized I am and how I will fit back there in China. Everyone so far has not give me much thought concerning this, and I think it is of vital importance to me. I will try to get down the first of June.

Please try to send me the money the first part of this month if possible.

Sincerely yours

Don't forget though that our own commencement comes about the time you have suggested for your visit, and that June is naturally about the busiest month of the year for me. Even so, I am sure that we can find a chance some where to sit down and talk over your problem, which I grant you is a real problem and one which we must handle with tact and care.

I have been so busy, that is why I haven't written to you. I am now work ing in isolation and we are rather busy.

I shall be going on my vacation soon & after that I shall be going to Butler Hospital & affiliates for two months. The senior class of each year goes there for the psychiatric work. I am sending you my account. You may see that I had to get a new supply of uniforms that are required.
June 6 is your birthday. I wish you will have the happiest birthday that you every had before.

Sincerely yours,
Mary

I have your good letter of June 3, and first of all wish to thank you for your birthday greetings. With my family pretty well [illegible], a birthday at present is a rather lame affair--something a bit different from what the birthdays need to be when you were a member of the family circle!

I am immensely interested to hear that you are going to have a couple of months of psychiatric work at Butler Hospital. Dr. Ruggles is a very warm personal friend of mine, and will, I am sure, take a special interest in you if you tell him of your connection with the Stearns family. I am sure you will find the work immensely interesting.

I am enclosing check for four hundred dollars as requested, and hope it will cover all our immediate and necessary expenses and have you enough to enable you to enjoy a really happy vacation this summer when the opportunity is given you.

With all best wishes, believe me

Very sincerely yours, </text>
