Your letter of February 10 to Dr. Stearns has been received in his absence. Dr. Stearns has gone abroad to make a study of English and foreign schools and is not expected to return until the last of March. Any pressing needs can, I am sure, be taken care of by Mr. Hopper in the Treasurer’s Office, but I am afraid Mr. Hopper would not want to advance money for an automobile without Dr. Stearns' sanction.

It is unfortunate that you did not write Dr. Stearns earlier regarding the Ford. We have been interested in reading about your activities at Middlebury. The account in THE CIRCLE will be brought to Dr. Stearns’s attention upon his return.

                <text>My dear Miss Greenwood,

I was surprised to hear that Dr. Stearns had gone to Europe. I thought that I would have been informed of that fact should he planned to go there.

I am sorry that you do not think that Mr. Hopper will advance me the money to buy the car without Dr. Stearns sanction. I have talked over the matter with him this Christmas when I was in Andover, and he was all in favor of it. He told me that I may buy one, a Ford, after the new models come out. The new ones came out this Christmas. The only reason that I want to buy it now and not later is the fact that the demand for cars are now low, and hence the prices of them are also low. But when Dr. Stearns comes back from abroad, the time will be the most important time, because all the people will want to buy cars, and hence the price will go up. To buy cars now is most economical at this time of the year.

I hope that you will give the matter another consideration. I have talked with Dr. Stearns concerning the car which I plan to buy this year after my graduation from Middlebury this Mid-Years. Now I have graduated. He gave me his consent concerning the same, and I was going to wait till now to ask him for the money for it.

Sincerely yours

                <text>My dear Miss Greenwood,

In your letter of Feb. 11th, you said that Mr. Hopper in the Treasurer's office can advance me the money should I need any. I wish to take this opportunity to exercise that privilege.

As you probably know that around this time of each year, I ask Dr. Stearns for the money for expenses for Easter vacation and the Spring term. The usual amount is 350.00 or 400.00 dollars. This year, I think I will need around 400.00 dollars. If you will please ask Mr. Hopper to send me that money, I will be very thankful indeed.

I have the report of my expenses for ready on hand, and I shall mail it to Dr. Stearns the winter session upon his arrival.

I am sure that you know exactly the date of Dr. Steams' return from Europe. If you will please diverge to that information I will be very thankful. I plan to visit him this Easter, and I do not want to be there during the midst of his work which he surely has to catch up.

Please mail the money so that I will be able to receive it by the first or the middle of the coming week.

Sincerely yours

I told Miss Clemons the day we had tea together that I was going to see you off at the station. I am sorry that I did not go.

By this time you must have arrived in Andover already for some time. I trust that the voyage across was a pleasant one. At present I have too little to do in the office to satisfy me. Minister Sze, however, will he here in two days; then I hope there will be more work and action all around.

I am planning to move into the Legation to live in a month’s time. Besides saving a little money, it’s going to be much more convenient for me as well as for the Minister. I hope that it will prove to be less lonely than my present abode.

I mentioned something about asking the Dean of the Yale Nursing School when Mary graduates. You said you would write to the dean. As I don’t know the address, will you be good enough to ask for this information for me?

With kind regards,

I am sure that by this time, you have some definite idea concerning Dr. Stearns's return from Europe. In you last letter, you said that you expect him to be back on or before the 31st of this month. I will appreciate any further information.

I have to see him concerning my application to Harvard as well as other requirements. I am with-holding my application. I have with-held for over a month waiting for Dr. Stearns's return. But I think I shall send it in and try to straighten out matters myself. I just merely wanted his advice.

I expect to be in Boston the 1st of next month, and if he is back then and not too busy, I shall like to drop in to see him.

Thank you for your troubles. I am

Here I am back again, as you will note. I have been here several days in fact, but have been too busy with pressing matters to give proper consideration to your claims.

If you are to be in Boston early next month, by all means run out and let’s have a talk about the Harvard admission. I have recently had a letter from your father in which he expresses some of his hopes and desires for you, which may prove helpful to us as we figure out your future work. I must be in New York on the first and second of the month, and may be delayed until the evening of the third in getting back. After that I ought to be here pretty regularly.

I have received a letter from Yale University. I already sent in my application with the necessary credentials and information.

In case if you wish to write favor to them, there are three possible persons who are more influential, the Dean of graduate school, Mr. Wilbur L. Cross, the associate dean, Mr. Edgar S. Furniss; the third is the head of the department of political science, whose name I do not know.

I am asking wither Mr. Cross or Mr. Furniss for a conference for next week, so as to give you ample time to write.

Your immediate advise and action will be appreciated.

Sincerely

                <text>Dear Tom:

I shall wait for a report from you on your Yale visit before writing any special letters in your behalf. Apparently nothing could be gained by sending these letters in advance of your proposed visit. Let me know, however, the minute you have anything new to offer, and I judge you will have something as soon as you have had your conferences with the authorities at Yale.

Wishing you every success in the venture, believe me
