<text>Dear Mary:

On my return from a week-end trip. I find your letter of recent date and also a letter from your father, dated May 23. Your father writes as follows in regard to the Nursing School plan:

"Since Mary is naturally inclined to nursing and you and Dean Harris are of the same opinion, it seems best that Mary should change the subjects of her studies to Nursing which would arouse her interest in her college work. Of late, western medical science has made wonderful progress and I am fully aware of its usefulness. So please kindly make due arrangements with the Elmira College authorities for Mary.

This leaves us a clear road ahead, and I am counting on you to take the necessary steps, and immediately, to insure your admission to the Yale Nursing School next fall. If there are any forms connected with your admission that have to be filled out or signed by me, I shall be ready to do my part, but the prime responsibility must necessarily fall on you; so don't waste a moment in finding out everything that is required and in sending the Yale authorities--Dean [illegible], I suppose, being the natural representative-whatever data they require. Be sure to have the Elmira authorities supply a complete statement of your work at that college.

I am counting on you now to take a wholly new and more enthusiastic and cheerful attitude towards your work. Further, I am counting on you to take this summer any work that may perhaps be necessary to enable you to enter Yale in the fall with the very best preparation possible to meet and meet with high standing the requirements of the Yale Nursing School.

Faithfully yours, </text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

I haven't written you for quite a while and I think that I ought to report to you how things are faring with me lately. Miss Clemons was in London around Christmas time. She was very kind in calling me up on the phone, hut on account of a previous engagement I was unable to have supper with her as she desired. She had to hurry to the country to see Miss Majorie; so I did not have a chance to meet her at all. I wrote her a letter while she was still in the country but got no reply as yet. I presume she is back now in France or somewhere else on the Continent.

My work is going on smoothly. I am enjoying it as usual. I am still feeling not quite myself in London. And I shudder every time when I think that my father wants me study. Several letters from him came last week. He is all excited and happy over the fact that I was not disappointed for having missed the opportunity to go around the world with Mr. Tong Shao Yi's proposed mission and then return to China. Encouraged by my attitude he is planning out ever more things for me.

Not only did he extend my stay abroad from the original one or two years to three or four, he also said that I should study, and not only that he even went as far as prescribing the courses I should take. Such as shorthand, typewriting, English literature, etc. My father reminds me of the old English family which shaped the course of its sons’ careers in every little detail. I know he means good, but it is really ruining me. I feel awfully unhappy. I asked Minister Sze what I should do, he said you just take a few night courses at the London University; it will please your father. According to my father’s former letters, the Minister has full instructions from him and that he knows and will tell me exactly what to do. But the paradox is that the Minister doesn’t. He thinks as you do that my father wants too much. I wrote my father a letter myself last week, telling	him exactly how I feel, and he can do what he wishes. I am not going to stay abroad all my life and study for	the whole life.

Please, Dr. Stearns, pardon me if I bore you with so many complains every time I write you. I have so many things in my mind but have no one to tell them to. I

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

Thank you ever so much for your two letters and the enclosed check for thirty-five American dollars ($3,500). I am very grateful for the good advise and kind encouraging words which you give me. After all that you and my father had done for me during these many years, it will be ungrateful of me to give up at this time of my career. I fully agree with you that time will solve many things which nothing else could. I believe it will be wise for me to settle down a little more before setting down anything as final. Please forgive me for writing those two hot-headed letters. I was so bewildered by my loneliness and sudden change of environment that I quite lost control of myself. I felt myself all unstrung, and, in fact, I still don’t feel quite myself as yet. But I shall try to regain my old form again. Thank you, Sir, a thousand times again for your letters which saved me more than anything else.

My work is, as I have said, extremely interesting and pleasant to me. During these last few days I am rather busy, I expect to be still more so after Christmas. But it will be so much more fun. Minister Sze is very kind and considerate to all his staff; really it is a pleasure to work under him.

At present I am temporarily lodged in a flat at ten- minutes-bus-ride distance from the Legation. After the New Year's season I expect to move into the Legation quarters; because besides saving me some money it will be much more covenient [sic] for my work. All the other members of the staff are living here.

Minister Sze has intimated that I had better take one or two lecture courses after Christmas or at the beginning of February. His idea is to have me studying so that my father will not be disappointed. He did not mention anything concerning working towards a degree. When things shape up more definitely, I shall not fail to let you know.

Miss Clemons replied my letter, which I addressed to her in France. She expects to be in London for Christmas, when I hope to be able to see her. I will tickle me to death to see some old friend from America again.

With best regards,

Obediently,

Dear Charlie:

Thank you for your last letter, that of December 19, and in which you acknowledge the receipt of the thirty-five hundred dollars which I recently sent you. From what I read only this morning in the papers of the distinctly bad exchange situation which exists in China today, I am sure it will mean a lot to your father if you are able to conserve this coney so far as you can reasonably do so.

Don't apologise for writing what you term “hot headed” letters. I think I know exactly how you felt and I had a lot of sympathy for you under the circumstances. Indeed, I am surprised that you seem to have gotten over your bewilderment so well and so promptly for I figured that it would last longer than this. If I have helped you in any way by my letters and encouragement, I am more than repaid.

Minister Sze's suggestion that you take one or two lecture courses seems to me eminently wise. In the meantime, I am hoping that we will get word from your father before very long, prompted by my last letter to him, that will enable you to banish from your mind the bogey of an extra degree. It is just possible that your father may take offence at the frankness with which I have written him, but I hope that his further reaction, after second and more sober thought, will be that I at least could have no ulterior motive in the matter and that I am only desirous of recommending a course that will really mean the most to you in the end and consequently most to your father as well.

With constant good will and every best wish for the New Year, believe me

Faithfully yours,

Dear Mr. Stearns,

Thank you so much for your Christmas gift. It is very nice of you to remember me. I have heard about the book but I don't own one. I certainly am glad I have one in my possession.

I didn't have but half a day off on Christmas day. I had a day off before that I went to New York where Tom and I met. We had a very short vacataion together. Now, we are busy working again.

I have heard from Charlie very often. He seems to miss U.S.A. a great deal. He gives me the impression that he is very lonesome. I hope that he will adjust him to England soon.

I am enclosing my account with this letter. Sorry that I am so very slow about it. Christmas I was put to bed on account of laryngitis \[illegible} it now I am all right.

Sincerely yours, Mary</text>

                <text>Dear Mary:

Thank you for your last letter and for the statement. I am sorry that you had so little time with Tom, but hope that you can arrange to get together again for a longer period before the winter is over.

Charlie has written me several times and his last letter was a much more cheerful one than those that preceded it. Naturally he misses his old friends and the conditions to which he had become accustomed in this country, but I am sure that he will make the adjustments in time and will find a lot in England to interest and cheer him.

It is too bad about that attack of laryngitis but I am glad that it did not prove more serious and that you have so promptly and fully recovered from it. Steer clear of bugs of that kind for the rest of the winter, for New Haven is not noted for being so free of them during the winter seasons as are some other cities and towns.

A happy and successful New Year to you.

Ever sincerely yours, </text>

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns;

I am writing you, Sir, on Christmas Eve all alone in an apartment house in the heart of old London. Two secreatries [sic] of the Legation had dinner with me in a Chinese restaurant; we had each a glass of wine for good cheer on the Happy Season. They then came to my place for a cup of tea, but they are gone now and I am spending the rest of my Christmas Eve by myself. As I am writing, a choir of men and women is singing Christmas corals [sic] immediately below my window. Really I never thought that songs could be so beautiful. As their voices floated through my room, my eyes were wet with involuntary tears, and I was just bearly [sic] able to keep from crying. I don’t know why I should feel so; may be it is the rememberance of the jolly days which I spent under your kind roof on similar occasions years ago or it may be the recollection of my happy days in general in America. At any rate, those songs certainly gripped me in a funny and queer way.

Miss Clemons was kind enough to call me up yesterday upon her arrival in London. Due to previous appointment that noon I was very sorry for not being able to have lunch with her as she wished. But we have arranged to have supper on the evening of the 27th when she returns from the country, where she is visiting Miss Majorie. This morning she sent me a Christmas greeting by wire, which I promptly replied. I am looking forward with pleasure to seeing her; it will be so good to see one of my old friends from America!
Minister Sze has been kind enough to write me a letter of introduction to the Manager of the Equitable Trust Company of New York, thus enabling me to deposit my money ($3,500), which you kindly sent me, in some safe place. This amount had been converted into Sterling at the. rate of 4.88-15/16, producing 715. 16. 9 pounds, which sum they have applied for me as follows:

315.16.9. $l,500) have been placed to the credit of a current account in my name, and provided the same do not fall below 100 pounds, they will allow me interest at the rate of per annum subject to change according to monetary conditions prevailing here.

400. 0 0. ($2,000 approximately) have been credited to a fixed deposit account for a period of three months from Dec. 20th, 1929 to 20th March, 1930, at the rate of interest of 4% per annum.

So far I have not touched either deposit excpet [sic] that a debit of 4s.2d has been created in respect of stamps on cheque forms.

I have already sent to you my Christmas Greetings. May I take this opportunity to convey my sincere wish for a Happy, Happy New Year?

Obediently yours,</text>

                <text>Dear Charlie:

Your beautiful New Year’s note, written on Christmas Eve, has touched me very deeply. How I would have loved to have you with me here in Andover on that day, for my own Charlie and I had a rather quiet and somewhat lonely time together and would have welcomed heartily an old friend like you. Those were good days, weren’t they, when we had the big family at the Samaritan House and plunged head over heels into the job of making Christmas a truly merry time and one to be remembered with pleasure.

I am sending only a hasty note this morning to wish you a truly happy and worth while New Year. I am glad to note also that the money reached you safely and has been wisely deposited.

Only yesterday your wholly unexpected and most generous Christmas present reached me. Again my thanks, therefore, and most hearty ones. I shall think of you and with friendliest and kindest thoughts whenever I look on your gift. which I am sure will be often.

Ever faithfully yours,</text>
