Miss Harris, who tells me that she is writing you in the endeavor to stir your pride and induce you to apply yourself as you should to your college work. She tells me further that you would have been dismissed from the college this spring if you had not been a foreigner, and she adds that your whole trouble rises from your social inclination and the fact that you waste your time deplorably. Just why this information was not sent me long ago, I don't know. I really think that you exaggerate your own limitations and that you are probably doing better than you are willing to give yourself credit for. Further, I am sure that your cold, which naturally makes you feel miserable, is reflected in the feelings you have expressed in your letter. Don’t get discouraged and don’t overwork. Remember that a good physical condition invariably means that you can do more and better work in a far shorter time than you can when you are not at your best physically. That is the chief reason that both Miss Clemons and I were so insistent that you should take more exercise than you are disposed to take of your own initiative. I honestly believe that this tendency on your part to avoid wholesome exercise leaves you in a sluggish state naturally which in itself would account for much of your trouble. I am not going to preach, however, but only suggest what I am sure is for your best. I had a nice letter from Quincey yesterday. He is very much distressed over the condition of things in China and tells me that the whole situation is much worse than it was before the fighting and than it has been reported here. He says also that he finds little of the so-called hatred of foreigners but indeed quits the reverse. Evidently he feels a good bit discouraged about the future, and I can’t wonder. I am glad to know that the new year opens up so promisingly for you and do hope that it will end with a record of steady good health and steady progress in your college work.
