My dear Dr. Stearns:

Mr. Tu has conferred with me about next year and he wishes to retain his present room, if this is satisfactory to you, for another year. A deposit of fifteen dollars is required to reserve a room for a student.

Mr. Tu is seemingly quite happy and well pleased over the fact that he might stay here another year. You can advise me concerning the matter.

I wish to assure you that, if he returns I will continue to take an interest in him, and I am sure the teachers will also. Our faculty will remain almost intact and he will hot have to negotiate the acquaintances which he did at the beginning of this year.
With kind regards, I remain

Sincerely yours,

My dear Dr. Stearns:

Yours of May 21st regarding Mr. K.Y.Tu has been received. You stated in the communication that you had enclosed a check for $15.00 to cover the registration fee. Permit me to state that evidently you forgot to place the check in the letter for there was no check therein. When the check is received the receipt will be mailed you.

I will do all I can to have Mr. Tu close this year satisfactorily.

I have not heard from you regarding his summer arrangements. We will close down here about the twenty-fourth or twenty-fifth of June and would like our students to leave by that time as we will go to tearing up the place to make extensive improvements on the boys side and the carpenters will be here the Monday after school closes. You can write to Mr. Tu or write directly to me concerning his summer plans.

Very truly yours,

My dear Dr.McDaniel:

I have delayed acknowledging your letter of May 24 in the hope that I could locate the missing check or learn from you that it had been received. Within the last day or two your receipt for the $15.00 in question, covering Mr.Tu’s registration for next year has come in. Just what became of the check in the interim, I don’t know, for the stubs on my check book on the entry of Mr Tu’s account show that the check, at least, had been made out, and, as I could not find it here, I had to assume that it had been sent.
I know little about Mr. Tu’s summer plans, and I am afraid that it will be very difficult for me to guide him from this long distance in arranging them. Any suggestions or help, therefore, which you may be able to offer me will be deeply appreciated.

Very sincerely yours

Dear Tu:

Here is a check for $10.00, as refloated, though I don’t like this way you have of asking for money for incidentals beyond what your monthly allowance is supposed to cover. The other Chinese boys do not handle their money in this way. The allowance is supposed to cover these incidentals, and legitimate and necessary bills are OK’d by the purchaser and then sent to me for payment. Please be sure to return the receipt for the check enclosed.

Very sincerely yours

My dear Mr. Tu

I have this morning received your letter of May 14, enclosing check for $600.00, which I am depositing to your boy's account,
The earlier check for $1,000.00, which you sent in your letter of February 2, was duly received, deposited to the boy's account, and an acknowledgment made you on March 2nd. I am enclosing a copy of that letter which apparently has gone astray, so that you may see that the check was duly received and the proper acknowledgement made. I sincerely trust that this letter may be more fortunate in reaching its destination. I am enclosing also a statement of your son's account to date.

It has been very difficult to handle the boy's problem at a distance, as I have had to do recently, but I am sure that he is getting in his present school more of the kind of work that he needs at present than would have been possible here at Andover, where the numbers are larger and the studies mere exacting. His present principal and the boy himself seem to feel that another year at the school where he is now studying will prove more beneficial to him than a change at this time.

The summer and vacation problems prove the most difficult ones to settle satisfactorily. The summer vacation, especially, is bound to prove expensive and hard to adjust in the best possible way. If you, yourself, have any suggestions to make in this connection, please let me have them. Summer tutoring schools and camps are regularly pretty high-priced; on the other hand, I don’t like to see boys, foreigners especially, turned loose for a vacation life at beaches, hotels, and summer resorts, and even that life is, of course, highly expensive also. I shall endeavor to arrange with the boy himself for a vacation that will prove as inexpensive as practicable and at the same time will give the lad a healthful and a profitable summer.

With kindest regards, believe me always

Very sincerely yours.

My dear Mr. Tu:

I have this morning received your letter of February 2 enclosing your check for 1000.00 which I am crediting to the account of your boy.

I am very much relieved, although not surprised, that you share so fully my feelings as to your son’s expenses and I shall continue to urge upon him in every nay in my power the importance, for his own sake as well as yours, of avoiding unnecessary outlays and living within reasonable limits. I don’t wish to cramp him in any way but I know from long experience that extravagance, when it becomes a habit with a boy, seems to act like a poison dimming his ideals, undermining his will, and cramping his ambitions for the highest and best things in life. I have already written the head of the school where the boy is now studying and have received his assurance that he will co-operate with me to the best of his ability in aiding your son to keep his expenses within proper limits. The boy himself has assured me that he will do his best to carry out our instructions.

With kindest regards and renewed assurances sf esteem, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Stearns,

IN reply to your kind letter of the 29th, December, 1925, It grieves me very much to hear of my son's giving you so much unnecessary troubles, your consenting to take him under your care is already deemed a special favour, a kindness I am not entitle to transgress, consequently, my feelings are disturbed and really annoyed, that my son should have disregarded your fatherly advices, extravagance is itself a bad habit and especially in the time of youth, whence the valuable time should be spent in reviewing his lessons, certainly it is not my object or intention to send him to the States for the visiting of friends or sight seeing.

I concur every word in the copy of your letter to him and now request you to strictly convey to him, "that he must obey your instructions; not to say necessities, he must obtain FIRST your permission, and to live and keep within his means.” In conclusion, you will please frankly tell him for me, that if he will not behave himself as directed he better pack up and return.

What you have done for me, no words can express my ever sincere gratitude to you, often I transverse ever the thought in my mind, how fortunate I am to have a distant friend, who takes so much troubles and interests in my son, and with a hope, some days he will return well educated and join me in the same gratitude, it is most discouraging, however, you will kindly accept my sincere thanks for all the troubles takes, I enclosed herewith a cheque for $1000.

In the meantime, it is my ardent desire that you fix a definite limit for his monthly expenses, cut down and curtail all incidental expenditures, above all he must in each case get permission from you first before he acts, trusting this will put a step to his unwarrented excuses, and by first opportunity to inform me of the nature of his studies and progress in the form of examination papers.

With kindest regards from

Yours most sincerely.
