Thank you for your interesting letter and the account of those rough and tumble basket-ball games. I didn’t suppose that girls could be anything but polite even in basket-ball! Your note reached me this morning, and I am glad to know that the new school and surroundings have already proved so attractive to you. I feel confident from what I hear from the most responsible persons on all sides that we could not have found a better school for you than Saint Mary's. I hope and believe that you will have a most successful and happy year there.

I received yesterday a telegram from your Sister Superior, asking if your trunk had been sent. To my surprise, I discovered that the janitor here at George Washington Hall was still holding it, and as he supposes under instructions from Mrs. Reilly, who had told him that she would let him know just when and how you wished it sent. He called up the express office at once and started the trunk on its way to Peekskill within an hour after the telegram was received. I hope that you will have received it long before this letter reached you, and that you have not been seriously inconvenienced by the delay. I have also authorized Sister Mary Antony to purchase for you whatever she deems necessary in the way of school uniform, etc.

Very sincerely yours, </text>

I am enclosing your allowance for May plus $10.00 which your father has asked me to send you as a birthday present from your mother and himself. He writes me, by the way, that the three children, two sons and a daughter, of his friend Mr. Chang wish to come to Andover next year and be under my charge. Your father suggests that the girl follow you to Whittier for a year and the boys follow Alfred to Mont Vernon. I do not know the Changs, of course, but I have written your father this morning that I would be glad, as usual, to do what I could to guide them in their American life and work.

Charlie, who is staying with me just now, as he has changed his business to Boston, took your stamp order in with him a day or two ago and tells me that he has delivered it to the Boston agent of Scott Stamp Company who will see that it is executed promptly.

With all good wishes, believe me

                <text>Dear Helen:

Thank you for your good letter of January 22.

The reason that you and Alfred have heard so little from me lately is that I have been almost constantly traveling about since Christmas day. I left for a short trip to Bermuda right after Christmas, returning just as the school was opening, and immediately after that was forced to start for the West to be gone nearly a week. As a matter of fact, I have had only two or three days in Andover since my return and have been fairly buried in work.

I am dreadfully sorry that I was not able to get Alfred’s birthday check to him on time, but I am sending it today. I hope he will be able to stand the strain and still rejoice in the receipt of some extra cash. I will also see that you get your January allowance. If I don’t find it possible to take it over to you in person.

I am glad that you are finding the winter term such a happy one. This has certainly been an unusual winter, so far as weather and temperature are concerned.

With all best wishes, believe me

Ever sincerely yours,</text>

I have your note of June 1st and do not see why you should not be able to come over on the train with the girls, as you seem to have developed into a pretty sensible and reliable traveler. I am afraid, though, that we may have to make some other arrangement for you outside of the Inn, as the Commencement crowd will have the place filled to overflowing during the following week. If we can't find room at the Inn. We will have something ready for you elsewhere.

                <text>Dear Helen:

Thanks for your good note of January 9. I have been back here only a day or two and hence have had little time to do anything but clean up my desk.

I am sorry you let Alfred have the suitcase, for I have not been able to find it as yet, although I telephoned to Mont Vernon asking that it be returned at once if Alfred had it there with him, which I suspect to be the case. As I am planning to leave for the West the latter part of this week and will need the case badly at that time, I hope to be able to find it before then.

Yes, the silk arrived only a day or two ago. It is lovely. I shall write your father at an early opportunity expressing my deep appreciation and gratitude.

It is just possible that I may be able to drop over and have a word with you before I leave town a day or two hence, though I am afraid that I must wait until later. In the meantime my heartiest good wishes to you for a truly happy New Year.

Ever sincerely yours, </text>
