The Dental Department of the University of California is an excellent school and is in the unclassified list, the other two being Cincinnati College of Dental Surgery and Texas Dental College neither of which should I be willing to recommend* Japan has several excellent schools, but of course it would not do to suggest that a Chinese attend a Japanese school. I am in accord with your opinion that there should be some responsible school where foreign students who do not fulfill to the "letter" all requirements for admission to Class A schools might be able to get a limited background in dentistry that would enable them to give Mr. Stearns much needed service in their native country. I have under my care, among others, a Chinese boy now twenty-one years of age whose father has been a prominent official in the Northern Government of China and who is anxious to have his boy to study dentistry. Unfortunately, the boy in question has not had extensive work along the lines which we naturally expect of boys who are in this country entering on their professional school work, and because of his age, I don’t believe he ought to attempt it. He has, however, had three years in this country, investing most of this time in the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary in New York State and part of it here at Andover. In view of the circumstances above mentioned, I can’t help forlonging that this boy should start at once on his professional work, if this can be arranged. On the other hand, if there is some further preparation which from your point of view seems desirable and necessary, I should be prepared to plan for it if it is not to involve too long a period of time. The reports emphasize the very mediocre quality of your son’s performance and raise seriously the question as to his ability or willingness to meet the scholarship requirements which will be demanded of him here at Andover. He has been very insistent that he should be allowed to undertake our work, and I am willing to grant him the opportunity, though I must admit with serious misgivings as to the outcome. I am still unable to determine in my own mind whether the difficulty is due to lack of ability or the boy’s part or lack of serious purpose. Both the factors probably enter into the situation, though I am inclined to think that the latter plays the more important part. Once your son has shown us what is able and willing to do, I can form a better opinion as to the real difficulty and can in convenience, perhaps, plan more wisely for his future.
