I have your letter of September 28 and am enclosing check to cover the expenses listed on your statement. Kindly return receipt for my files.

I am dreadfully sorry about this whole unfortunate mix-up over Mary's room at Elmira. Frankly, I doubt if anything would be gained by sending Mary's letter on to her father, especially since the Elmira authorities were so emphatic in their statements to me that the plan we had discussed was unwise and that Mary was acting entirely in accord with their desires and methods in taking the dormitory room. Of course you must remember that Mary has now been in this country a number of years and is older and mature than many of the Chinese girls already in college. For the past two years, especially, I have given her increasingly more responsibility in handling her own affairs, though, even so, I imagine from what I have seen that she has been more carefully directed in such matters than almost any other Chinese girls in the country today. The one thing that I most seriously blame her for in this particular mix-up is her failure to advise me that she was planning to invest the week-end on her way to Elmira with a friend in Trenton. The plan would doubtless have had my approval had it been explained to me in advance, but, as it was, I was left in the dark for the time being as to her whereabouts and that only added to the confusion and the anxiety.

Again my thanks for all you have done to aid me and my regrets for the unnecessary anxiety and trouble you have been caused.

                <text>My dear Mr. Sun:

I acknowledge the receipt of your letter of August 23 with instructions as to the readjustments of the credits of the accounts of your children. Following your request, I have transferred form Quincey Sheh's account the sum of $1,000.00 and have added this as credits of $500.00, each, to the accounts of Mary and Tom.

The new school year starts off with the last of your children leaving Andover for a higher institution. The last one is Tom, who has just entered Middlebury College, having succeeded, somewhat to my surprise but greatly to my satisfaction, in passing off the final entrance requirements this fall. Tom did some good hard work this summer which has borne fruit. Middlebury is a college of excellent standing, though one of the smaller ones, and Mr. Moody, the president, has expressed great personal interest in Tom's case and has promised to follow him closely. Moody is a very close personal friend of mine and the son of Dwight Moody, the famous American Evangelist and the founder of the Northfield Schools of international reputation.

Arthur is just about to take his make-up examinations at the Institute of Technology in Cambridge in the hope of securing his too long deferred degree. He is anxious to get a position for the coming year where he can secure practice experience, but, as he seems unwilling to start as a draftsman, such a position is exceedingly difficult to find. I have suggested to him that it would be well to being even in this humble capacity and then bend every effort to prove himself worthy of broader work. Of course if he should by chance fail his make-up examinations, though I hope this may not happen, he will find it almost impossible to secure a position of the kind he seeks. He is to confer with me the moment the results of his examinations are known.

Charlie returns to Amherst and goes on his steady and dependable course. He is in every way a most satisfactory fellow to work with and his record has been an increasing source of satisfaction to me, as I am sure it must be to you.

Mary's problem has been a bit trying of late. With Minister Sze's help, arrangements were made for her admission to Elmira College, as you know. To complete the necessary preparation to visit approved friends during that period. With my endorsement she went to Springfield, Mass., for the last week of the vacation to stay with a friend there, planning to go direct from there to her college for its opening early the following week. At the end of the week in question Mr. Robinson arrived and we discussed together, of course, the situation of all the children. Mr. Robinson seemed to think it very desirable that someone should accompany Mary to Elmira. Since for the past two years she has had a large experience in handling her own affairs, I felt that she was perfectly capable of taking this next step alone, as nearly all of our American girls are accustomed to do and as I know many Chinese girls have done also. Yielding to Mr. Robinson’s feelings, however, I got in touch with Arthur and Charlie by telegraph, only to find that it would be impossible for them to adjust their plans to make the trip. Mr. Robinson then suggested that he would try to meet Mary himself en route to Elmira and accompany her there and that, if this proved impossible, he would get his sister to go. Consequently I endeavored to advise Mary of the situation and plans but discovered that she had already left Springfield Saturday and was passing the week-end with a school friend in Trenton, K. J., and thus avoiding the necessity of investing: a night in New York City or elsewhere on the way to Elmira. The plan she was carrying out was in every way a proper one though her failure to notify me in advance caused both Mr. Robinson and myself for the moment a great deal of confusion and some anxiety. I am sure, however, that Mary felt that she was doing the right thing and did not realize that any confusion might result.

Mr. Robinson from the outset was very insistent that Mary should room her first year at Elmira in a private home, and, as he told me that this was your earnest wish, I naturally accepted the plan and advised Mary accordingly. Mary’s reply indicated great distress, which, for the moment, I could not understand, later, however, I received a letter from the Registrar at Elmira, in which she expressed most emphatically disapproval of the arrangement which she said was wholly contrary to their practices and which the college authorities felt strongly would be unwise for and unfair to Mary herself. She added that the college freshman dormitory provided surroundings in every way wholesome and best conducive to the welfare of students entering. Naturally under these conditions I felt it would be unwise to carry out Mr. Robinson’s plan and that you, yourself, would feel so too, if you were in possession of the information from thee college authorities which had just been placed in my hands. Further, Mary had already signed a contract for the dormitory room with my full approval; so that there was in a sense another obligation involved. Mr. Robinson in the meantime had arranged with some missionary family in Elmira to take Mary in: so, of course, it was necessary to explain matters to them which I attempted, to the best of my ability, to do.

I hope that my final decision will meet with your fullest approval. My one desire was to do what was proper and best for Mary and at the same time follow a course that would be approved by you. Mr. Robinson’s arrival just as the college was about to open and the injunction of the new plan naturally upset things a good bit, and the complications were a little more pronounced because of the intimation, riven by Mary in one of her letters, that Mr. Robinson might not fully represent your real views in the matter, especially if the actual facts and conditions had been fully known to you in advance. Of course this intimation, and I am passing it on to you in confidence, did not affect the situation or influence me in my final decision. I simply felt that the college authorities knew best what Mary ought to do and that their own statement to me that for me to place Mary outside would be unwise and contrary to college practice must be relied on.

Please pardon these somewhat lengthy details, but I am anxious that you should have all the facts before you so as to understand just what has been done and why. There are times when I would give almost anything to be able to talk matters over with you, for even just a few minutes but face to face, for I feel a pretty heavy sense of responsibility in attempting to work out by myself and at this distance all the problems which confront me in connection with the care and education of your four children.

With warm personal regards, believe me always

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Mary:

Year telegram has just reached me, but unfortunately I wrote your father several weeks ago, and prompted by your own urgent request, endorsing heartily your proposed plan to take the course at the Yale Nursing School. I shall await the receipt of your letter with interest to know what has led you to change your plans so suddenly but in the meantime I am sending this note at once so that you may know how matters stand.

Every sincerely yours,

                <text>Dear Mary:

On receipt of your note of September 28, I sent you a check for $25.00 to meet the necessary incidentals of the opening college year.

Within a few days I shall try to figure out a way to handle your funds for the current year. If you can be as careful and do as well as Charlie and Quincey, I shall be only too glad to send a lump sum, as I do them, allowing them to keep a bank account and make payments as necessary. Both have been extremely careful and have kept their expenses well within bounds, and I have reason to believe that you can and will do the same. Anyway, I have about made up my mind to try it, only this will mean that you must keep a careful and detailed account of all expenditures and let me have it when the money is exhausted, so that I can figure clearly which way works best.

Did you know that I am now looking after another Chinese girl, who, with her brother, has recently been put in my charge by the Chinese Minister in Washington. They are children of Admiral Tsai of Peking and are most attractive and likable. The young lady will put in this year at Whittier, brushing up on English alone, so that next year she will be able to tackle a larger school. Her brother is doing the same kind of work at Mont Vernon and for the same reason.

Ever sincerely yours,

Dear Charlie:

On my return to my desk this morning I find your letter of recent date, received at the office on September 7.
Doubtless you have received by this time the letter which I wrote you from the Lake immediately on the receipt of your own letter of earlier date. I told you of my feeling about the Norwich University plan and of my readiness to approve of the step, provided only your father approved also. If you have not received this letter, please let me know and I will have a copy of it sent you. My bag which contains the summer correspondence has not yet come through, but I expect it today.

I am sending you a check for $500.00, as requested, to cover the college expenses of the fall term, at least. As summer expenses invariably mount higher than we anticipate. I hope you will be able to keep the expenses of the college year down to as reasonable limits as practicable.

With all good wishes, believe me,

Ever sincerely yours,

Your special delivery letter arrived this morning. Dr. Stearns is coming down from his camp the last of this week, and you will probably hear from him soon after that. I am not forwarding your letter because the chances are that it would not reach Pittsburg until after he had left.

Very truly yours,

                <text>
My dear Dr. Stearns,

Enclose please find the statement of my expenses for the passed summer. I hope that it will be satisfactory. On the third sheet you will find that I have added up the different expenses. That is the way I find to be the most satisfactory, because I had to buy my meals everyday and it will take more than a dozen sheets of paper to state them day by day. In that case it will confuse you to have so many items to look over, whereas in this way you can get a birds-eve view of the whole thing. I made a trip down to Easton to see one of mv
friends, and if I put down everything, a large quantity of paper will be used and will be less sufficient, but if you want that, I have it right here, but not written down in any form so that I can hand it in and have anyone else understand it except me. But I will be glad to do it if you wish it so.

As a result I find that staying in Boston is very expensive. The amount that surprised me is the expenses for subways. But if you come to think of it, that ten cents per trip, the amount will be exceedingly high at the end of the summer. This year I will have additional Fraternity dues to pay, but that will balance the low cost for my room which is 45.00 per semester instead of 75.00 which I had to pay last year. The board increased from 125.00 45 to 144.00. I am living and eating at the Fraternity House. I will as last year need 500 dollars for the fall term to pay all the college bills and the fraternity bills, besides I will have to buy books which amount to a big sum last year, and it is likely to be thus again.

I am writing this at this time is that am rather short and I also know that you will be very busy around the 16th of this month fixing things up and interviewing visitors before Andover opens.

I have read with great interest your last letter and also that which you wrote to Mr. Eaton and which Mr. Eaton showed to me. Congratulations, and hearty ones on your successes to date! Don't let them turn your head, though, or prompt you to feel that the Freshman year is going to be any snap. You will have your hands full, I am sure, if you weather that year successfully, and of course we can't consider anything but a successful outcome.

I have sent you $500.00, as you know, and in doing so I have some misgivings, naturally, in view of your past carelessness in handling money. My earnest hope is that, by putting this added responsibility on you, I shall be justified through finding that you have developed a clearer appreciation of money's value and a stronger will in keeping expenditures where they belong. If, when you seek to replenish your funds, you are able to render me a satisfactory account of the disbursement of the $500.00 in question, I shall be ready and glad to continue this arrangement, assuming, of course, that the money has lasted as long as it ought. If you can only do as well as Quincey and Charlie have done since they have been in college, I shall be delighted beyond words and at the first opportunity shall gladly pass on the good news to your father, who, I am sure, would be immensely relieved at such a report.

The best of luck to you,

                <text>Dear Mary:

Your good letter of September 27 has just reached me. I am glad that you are writing your father a full explanation of the complications which arose in connection with your trip to Elmira, for I am sure that, when he hears from Mr. Robinson, he will feel that I distinctly neglected my proper responsibilities, and I know that he will be disturbed.

The chief reason I accepted the invitation to preach at Elmira was the opportunity it would afford me to see you in your new surroundings and talk things all over with you in person. As you know, we have had little chance in recent months to discuss your affairs, and I am consequently glad of this coming chance to do so.

With all good wishes, believe me,

Faithfully yours,

                <text>My dear Mrs. Pitman:

I have your letter of September 21 and am sorry beyond words for all the trouble you have been caused over the uncertainly [sic] in regard to Mary Sun's rooming arrangement at Elmira. I, myself, have been tremendously disturbed by the whole affair which has had, seemingly, endless complications.

Mr. Robinson, to whom you refer, is secretary of the Y.M.C.A in Tientsin, Mary's home, and is a personal friend of her father. He happens to be in this country this summer and, when he heard of the college arrangements made for Mary, expressed the view that Mary's father wished her to room for the first year, at least, in some good Christian home. He volunteered to find such a home, if he could, and I, of course, accepted gladly this offer. In the meantime, Mary had signed up for a dormitory room in the college, and the interchange of a number of telegrams left us both somewhat uncertain as to what the final outcome would and should be.

Mr. Robinson later wrote me that he had asked his sister, who lived in Cortland, to go to Elmira to complete the arrangements, and I wired Mary Sun, who had mildly protested against the change of plan, that she must accept this new arrangement and cancel the college room contract at once. I assumed that there would still be time for the college to fill the vacancy thus created. In the meantime, it appears that the college authorities had strongly advised Mary not to live outside the college buildings. When Mr. Robinson’s sister appeared at Elmira, she received the same urgent advice and wired me that under the circumstances she felt that the dormitory arrangement should hold. A letter from the Registrar of Elmira College, received by me the next day, contained also the same advice couched in very strong language. and in view of these facts I felt that the only thing I could properly do was to wire Mary to stand by the original dormitory plan. I assumed, of course, that Miss Robinson would explain the situation fully to you, and I am sorry if she did not do so at the time.

Trusting that the above explanation will make the situation perfectly clear and will show you, too, that all of us tried to the best of our ability to act in good faith to all concerned, believe me

Very sincerely yours,
