The room arrangements for Mary Sun have been very much complicated through the appearance on the scene of Mr. Robinson, a very close and intimate friend of Mary's father in China. Mr. Robinson brought with him the last reports of Mr. Sun's desires, and these were, apparently, that Mary should room for her first year in college in some good private family. Under the circumstances I felt that this was the only course to pursue and expressed my approval of the plan, but seemingly very much to Mary's regret. Mr. Robinson, in the meantime, had arranged with a family in Elmira to take the girl for the year, and I consequently asked Mary to notify you at once of her desire to cancel the room in the dormitory, believing that there would still be an opportunity for you to find another occupant before the college actually open. She asked for my advice, and I wired her at once expressing my approval. I hope, therefore, that the trouble has now been revoved [sic] and that the arrangements made will prove in every way I am a bit surprised at what you say of the artificiality and unusualness of housing a girl, and especially a foreigner, outside of the college buildings for the first year of her college course, for I know that in most of the colleges such an arrangement is the one commonly made and preferred. The boy is in some ways peculiar. So far as reports have reached me, he has always been faithful and earnest in his work and has done well in his various subjects. Along that line he seems well worth helping. In some either ways, however, he has been harder to understand. Some of our poorest boys here are accustomed to put up with pretty rugged accommodations. Ungvary from the start objected to such surroundings on the ground that his health required something better. This may be perfectly true and I don’t want to be unfair to him. At the same time on several occasions I have thought I noticed a little tendency to spend a little more money and secure something a little better than a good many of our working boys required. Doubtless the boy’s health and temperament may make this necessary. Please don’t misunderstand me for, barring the traits referred to, the boy seems in every way most worthy. But I would regret deeply to have him develop a lack of appreciation of what is being done for him and a willingness to accept freely all charities offered without doing his part to make ends meet. Early in the term I secured him an excellent opportunity to earn a most desirable room. He threw up the job within a few days on the ground that the ladies in charge of the house were too fussy and exacting. I know they were particularly but I know that every year boys have rejoiced to get the particular opportunity afforded in this house and that the moment Ungvary gave up the position, another good fellow stepped immediately and enthusiastically into the breach. This is one of the things that has made me a little nervous about the boy. In a word, it does not seem to me that he has yet done his best to help himself. If he has been laid off at the dining hall, it is because he was less efficient than the others. I hope, however, that this lay off may be only temporary. If after being at home a few months or a year and having a chance to look over the situation for yourself at first hand you feel that some further and specialised work in this country would fit you better to serve your country later, then it will be within your proper province to come back again. Frankly, it seems to me that what the new government in China needs more than anything else just now is men of high ideals and sterling character who will stand against every insidious influence for honesty and justice in public as in private life. Since I am confident that you are made of that fine stuff, I cannot help feeling that you will render a bigger service to your country through your personal influence than you will even through your knowledge of economic laws and your study of economic problems. It was certainly fine to have that little chat with you up at Amherst last week, and I regret more than I can say that they kept me so busy that day that I had no chance to see more of you and talk over your problems in greater detail. Stearns to Charles Sun, Amherst College, March 15, 1928 Relation A related resource Dear Charlie: When I was in Springfield two weeks ago to meet a preaching engagement, I met by appointment the representatives of the Aetna Insurance Company who went over me in careful detail all the items connected with your automobile accident and the financial obligations which you will apparently have to face in the way of damages. The men I met seemed to be exceptionally straight-forward and reliable fellows, and I cannot help feeling that you were extremely fortunate to be involved with one of the most responsible insurance companies in the country rather than with some crook lawyer who might, perhaps, as often happens, have sought to collect damages from you mounting up into the thousands. With the exception of one item, which the Insurance Company is looking up more fully and carefully, I don't see how the figures submitted can be reduced. The total comes to a bit over $700.00 and the Company has promised to send me the necessary waivers when the item referred to above has been checked up, and I have promised them that the obligation would be duly met. I am sorry, but I don't see how we can possibly get out of it in any better way. When it comes to the question of payment, I need your advice. I can send the check direct from here, but of course I will have to enter it on the statement of your account which eventually will go home to your father. While I don't wish to conceal anything from your father that he should properly know, I don't want to alarm him unduly by submitting an item of this size of which he may not have been informed in advance. I am wondering, therefore, whether you have said anything about this to him or not. Of course it would be possible, and I think, proper to send you the sum involved and allow you to pay the Company with your own check, especially if you think you are going to be able to find a way to work off some of the obligations through your own efforts. This would give you a longer chance, perhaps, and a better opportunity to explain the situation to your father, but I am very sure that in the end that explanation ought to be given. I myself will be ready and glad to take the matter up direct with your father if you approve. My preference would be that letters from both of us should go to him at the same time and probably in the same envelope to avoid any chance of miscarriage. I am sure that I can explain matters to your father in a way that would ease his anxiety and make him feel that you had played a straightforward and honorable part in the transaction. Please let me know exactly how the matter strikes you, for I don’t want to do anything to make things harder for you or that will in any way embarrass you unfairly.
