<text>May 24, 1926
Mr. C. Y. Sun
44 Cambridge
Tientsin, China

My dear Mr. Sun

I this morning received your letter of April 31.

Mr.Sze and I have had personal conference and have continued to discuss Mary’s case and plan for her future by correspondence. Your letter seems to express your full approval of the steps which we have been taking, a bit in the dark at times, I must admit, so far as your real desires were known to us.

This morning’s mail also brings me a letter from the President of Elmira College, the college which both Mr. Sze and I decided was best fitted to meet Mary's needs, saying that after reading my letter the Committee on Admissions had decided to admit Mary on my recommendation, even though she may not be fully able to pass all of the regular entrance examinations. This is good news indeed, and the gratifying decision is no doubt due in large measure to Mr.Sze's personal influence and interest in the case. Of course for Mary's own sake it is imperative that, even though technically admitted, she should have covered as far as possible the full preparation required in order that she may not find the college work itself beyond her reach and too hard. With Mr. Sze's help, I am arranging for her to study during the summer under the direction and in the home of a competent member of the Elmira College faculty. I am sure that such a plan offers the best and most worth while kind of a summer that can be planned for Mary at Just this stage.

Now that Mary’s case has been definitely, and I believe satisfactorily, settled. I most admit that the biggest problem I have on my bands at present and the cause of my chief worry is Tom. Tom is not doing well, and our combined efforts to rouse him and make him realize just where he stands and where he is heading seen thus far to have failed. At our last faculty meeting I asked Tom's teachers for full and frank expression of opinion on Tom and his problem. All are agreed that the boy can and should do letter work. Most of them also feel, as I have come to feel, that the boy has reached the point where he is not gaining additional benefits by the school connection here but indeed gives evidences of slipping a bit. We can't possibly graduate this June. By faculty vote he has just been put on what we call probation because of his low standing and because this is the customary penalty imposed on a boy with a record like Tom's. This means that, in the judgment of the faculty, it is altogether unlikely that the boy should be allowed to go on here next year.

The more I have studied the case, the clearer I am that Tom is not yet quite ready for college and the freedom of collage , unless it be a small New England college somewhat separated from the temptations and activities of a big city. He might get into such a college next fall, but I doubt whether this would be rise. My inclination at the moment is to favor and favor rather strongly a year in a good military school, for Tom evidently needs discipline, to be made to do things accurately and on time and to obey orders promptly and without questioning - in fact to make those contacts and secure those influences which a prod military school supplies. I have been interested to find that several of my colleagues on the faculty who have known Tom most intimately share my views completely. When Mr. Robinson appears, I shall discuss the case with him fully and carefully, for I confess that I am troubled, and I must also admit that it seems out of the question for Tom to fulfill your wish that he should graduate from this school without forcing him to take another year, which would mean a good deal of repetition and a continuation of the same influences which have lately, at least, not proved stimulating to him. with the inevitable result of lessened ambition and effort on is part; and that, of course, would mean ultimate disaster and must be avoided at all costs.

I appreciate more deeply than I can tell you the friendly and generous cooperation you have so readily given me at all times and the confidence you have so generously reposed in me as I have sought to carry out your wishes for your children. Naturally I am doubly troubled when the results most desired do not come or seem to be at least delayed. At any rate, I can assure you that to whatever extent I may have failed in aiding your children to obtain the goals which you have cherished for them, there has been no lack of willingness or interest and there has always been a sharing on my part of the disappointment and regret which have naturally been years.

Believe me, with warm regards and friendliest good wishes.
Very sincerely yours.</text>

Dr Alfred E. Stearns,
Philips Academy,
Andover, Massachusetts,
U. S. A.

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have your cable as follows:
" DONT WORRY MARYS MESSAGE AWAIT MY LETTER " and on receipt of your long letter of explanation on March 19th I replied as follows

" GRATEFUL LETTER DETAILS GIVING CONCENSUS OPINION CLEMONS, BAILEY, ARTHUR REGARDING MARYS COLLEGE QUALIFICATIONS. I NOW EMPHASIZE COLLEGE LESS, MAY I SUGGEST MARY RETURN ABBOT FOR DIPLOMA. ROBINSON WILL DISCUSS FUTURE PLANS PERSONALLY "

I trust this cable to you made clear my reaction to the situation concerning Mary.

I am very sorry for any worry and distress this matter must have caused you and I want you to know that I appreciate very much every thing which you have done. I can fully appreciate the difficulties under which you were labouring, we are both working at long distance, - and I would answer you that my cable implies no criticism of anything which you had done previously. It only seemed to me considering the opinions expressed by Misses Clemons, Bailey & Arthur that Mary may not have qualifications fitting her for college work that at least Mary had better finish up at Abbot and have this one item out of the way. Then we can talk the future.

As to that future, I had thought of the possibility of getting to the States this Summer but that is quite out of question. Fortunately Mr & Mrs Robinson are going home on furlough and he will be able to take up with you, the question of Mary’s future, of course I am ignorant of every thing in the States, never having there, and you will have to overlook this disability on my part but I have talked things over very thoroughly with Mr Robinson and am empowering him to act fully on my behalf and shall abide by whatever decisions he reaches after consultation with you.

I want to thank you again most heartily for all the painstaking thought & care you have given to all the matters.

Thank you for the clipping from the paper giving Quincy Sheh’s picture as Odist at Bowdoin. We all feeling very proud of the boy and thanks for your training that he had received from you.

I should say a word as to why my answer has been delayed so long. For one thing Mr Robinson had been in Hospital which made it difficult for me to consult with him, and in the second place we have been up set in Tientsin by the recent military disturbances that it had been most difficult for one to concentrate one’s mind on the normal affairs of life however important.

With kindest regards
Yours very cordially

Enclosure:-
One copy of letter dated 21st April to Mr A. G. Robinson.

P. S. :
Your letter of March 19th has just came in, I think I need add nothing more than I have already said regarding Mary’s plans etc.
In reference to Tommy I am quite in agreement with what you say. If he should continue to wish to take a course of training fitting him for business I should desire him to go to Wharton but I would advise that he go to college as you suggest, and then go to Wharton. He will be much better prepared for real usefulness and leadership if he has back of him the four years of intellectual training which college should give him. I agree to Amherst as you suggest where Charlie will be able to keep an eye on him.</text>

                <text>April 28, 1926.
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns
Phillips Academy Andover,
Massachusetts

My dear Dr. Stearns:
The enclosed letter from Mr. Sun was received two days ago. I thought that part about Mary's studies may be of interest to you. Please return the letter to me when you have finished with it.

I also enclose a copy of a cablegram I sent to Mr. Sun. I intended to send it to you first before cabling, but through a misunderstanding on the part of my Secretary it has been despatched already.

In looking over my file, I discovered that of the three letters I wrote you on or about April 5th about Mary, I had only one in my file. That is the one acknowledging the receipt of the telegraphic transfer of money. May I ask you to be good enough to cause copies to be made of the other two letters and send them to me at your convenience?

With best wishes, I am
Very sincerely yours,

April 26, 1926.
Please inform C. Y. Sun that his letter March 29th just received and Mary’s affairs are settled on lines of my letter April 5th to Dr. Stearns. She is apparently satisfied and happy.

Tientsin 29th March, 1926

My dear Alfred
I beg to own receipt of your kind letters sent to me directly and through Charlie Liang, together with copies of the correspondence between you & Mrs Sze and Dr. Stearns, Mrs Shapleigh, Arthur & Mary. It is indeed very kind of you and Mrs Sze to have taken such deep interest in Mary's affairs, for which I wish to thank you most heartily.

After careful consideration of the whole question regarding Mary's change of school, and taking advantage of the opinion expressed by Dr. Stearns in his letter of Feb, 22nd, from which I quote: " Arthur, however, is inclined to share my own feelings those of Miss Clemons, who has followed Mary pretty closely in her work, and those expressed, too, by Miss Bailey, Principal of Abbot Academy, that it is a serious question whether Mary has the proper qualification to make a College course for her practicable and wise." I have cabled Dr. Stearns, suggesting to him that Mary be sent back to Abbot to complete her work for her Diploma. I enclose a copy of this cable for your perusal.

Owing to the most exciting times that we are now passing through, quite unparalled in any previous experience in China, I confess I have not yet been calm enough in my mind to settle down and write my reply to Dr. Stearns, but I shall send you a copy as soon as I do write. The strain on one's nerve is terrible- the whole city is feeling that there is still something most disastrous going to happen. This is the BFNFFICIAL(?) result which the so called Anti-Red Army is forcing the people of Tientsin to enjoy. The so-called Red Army of General Feng’s troops are loved & respected by all those who have ever had any opportunity to see their manner toward people. I say so without prejudice. I do not know Feng or any of his subordinates, except those soldiers who have been loved by the people during their short stay in Tientsin. They are our TREASURE and will one day be the SAVIOURS of this country. All the country people say exactly what I have said. Excuse my talking of this here, but I thought you ought to know the facts.

As to your kind invitation for Mary to spend the Easter and Summer vacations with you, may I thank you and Mrs Sze for your kindness. I have written Dr. Stearns some time ago asking him to permit Mary to accept such invitation privided it did not interfere with her Summer schools work, to prepare her for college. As there is not now such need for this preparation, I hope Dr. Stearns will permit Mary to accept your kind invitation.

I have not been able to go down to Shanghai for the last nine months. I trust I can do so soon the railway communication is restored, if condition here permits.

With kind regards to Mrs Sze and thank you for all your kindness to Mary.
I beg remain
Yours sincerely
