To my deep retret, I cannot report over-favorably on your boy’s work and progress in the business school with which he has been associated this coming year. He himself isn’t apt to give me any clear inkling of just how he is getting along. Consequently I wrote to the Dean of the Burdett Business College and received a long and carefully written reply, indicating on the Dean’s part a very careful investigation of Kong's situation and accomplishment. While it is true that your son seems to have been accomplishing something probably more than he did in his last school, the Dean tells me that his spirit has not been of the best and that he hasn’t shown the right kind of ambition or purpose. Indeed, at times the officers of the school have apparently been a good bit discouraged. They have promised, however, to get into more intimate touch with the boy and bring all the pressure they can to bear upon him to force him to take better advantage of the opportunities they are offering so that when he does return to China at the end of the year, as I assume he will, he will at least be better prepared to associate himself with some business concern or bank and be qualified to do the work demanded of him. I shall continue to write Kong and urge him to do his best for your sake and for his own. When the opportunity offers, I shall be glad to renew my pleadings with him face to face. My own feeling Is that while the boy may and probably does at times have sincere desires to do a higher grade of work, he has for so long drifted in his intellectual interests that he finds it extremely difficult to concentrate hie mind on the work before him or to develop habits of study which should have come years ago. Y. Tu. The report is naturally very discouraging, but altogether too familiar in its general character. During the past thirty years I have had to deal at first hand, in most cases acting as their American guardign, with some sixty or seventy Chinese students in this country. At the present moment I have three in my care, of whom Tu is one. With only one other or possibly two other exceptions, Tu differs completely from the main body of these students, and in just the ways that you have so clearly outlined. He has been a problem from the start, and on several occasions I urged his father to take him back to China, as it seemed to me that it was a sheer waste of time for the boy to stay here longer, pretending to study when he was getting no here, and to waste also the father's money, of which Mr.Tu, Senior, has none too much. Last year Mr. Du Senior, for many years an admiral in the Chinese Navy, called on me in person, and I met him again a few weeks later in England. Through the interpreter whom Admiral Tu carried with him, we went into every detail of Kong's situation, and I held back nothing. The father's distress was manifest for he is a man of exceptionally fine character himself, and filled with ambitions for his son. After many discussions, it was decided to give Kong one more chance in this country, but to drop all thought of giving him any further education along cultural or purely scholastic lines and to turn him to a straight business training. That is why he was finally sent to you. From your report, I am led to believe that we must abandon all hope of changing this boy's general make-up and points of view. He lacks ambition, he lacks stability, and I am afraid he lacks any rigid and compelling moral standards. It has been my hope all along that he would emerge from his lethargy - or worse - if we gave him time, but he is far older than he ought to be in view of his progress to date and I am pretty sure that further efforts to educate him in this country along any lines will be only wasted. In view of the special plans which you have made for the boy, however, I am ready to wait a bit before making the decision operative. Certainly this final test ought to convince us one way or the other, and it certainly offer the boy himself his chance to prove his worth. Tu, and in reply let me first express our appreciation for your confidence in recommending that he attend Burdett College. In the past we have had a number of Chinese students, all of whom have distinguished themselves by their intellectual grasp of the instruction and subject matter. Their attitude was usually all that could be desired. Mr. Tu has been an exception. He is somewhat of a problem, but one, despite our discouragements, that we are not, as yet, inclined to admit as impossible. Mr. Tu seems unwilling to concentrate. He is generally inattentive in class and has been, in some instances, disrespectful to instructors. Furthermore, he demonstrates a tendency not to work seriously upon the subjects that he does not take to naturally. Two minor subjects, penmanship and typewriting, have enlisted his interest and in both he has done fair work. In the ordinary course of events, we would some time ago have asked him to withdraw, but we believe he has both the ability and background and if we can, through appeal or otherwise, awaken a desire within him, we can help him overcome most of his difficulties. In that attempt, we have resorted to appeal, to inspiration, and to the setting up of a definite requirement as to objective, but our efforts so far have not brought the result that we wish. Today, as a final endeavor, we are starting upon a plan which in conference we have explained to him. In this endeavor, he is to be put upon a basis where he will be subjected to the direct supervision of his department head and three school officers. We have taken the rather unusual step of attempting to enter into an agreement with him, the salient features of which are that he will accept a schedule of hours comparable to those observed in a business day and that he will remain after school hours under definite supervision. The program we have outlined for him is enclosed, and he has agreed that upon its presentation in the morning he will sign it. We are taking this rather extraordinary step because there is that element in the character of the pure Chinese whereby once having made an agreement, the conditions of the agreement are ordinarily carried out. We do not know whether this will work out successfully or not, but we shall try it. Conferences with Mr. Tu have been numerous. Each time he admits his fault and indicates a willingness to make correction. Sometimes he has shown resentment toward the attempts we have made to hold him to a requirement. He has now promised that his attitude will be different with respect to the enclosed schedule. This report is somewhat detailed — more so than I had intended it to be — but your interest in the case has been the reason for it. Had we known the extent of your interest, we would have submitted a report earlier. Mr. Tu has received such reports as are regularly issued, and we understood that he had conferred with you with regard to his marks and his progress.
