You two letters of July 8 and 10 reached me here at camp and I am glad to learn that all is going well with you and that Alfred, too, seems happy and his camp across the lake.

Thank you for sending me the statements of your purchases at Filenes. I have written to Filenes asking them to send me a regular bill of late, which I will send them a check to cover everything. As the statements you sent me are made out to Mrs. Nye it is very probable that the account is properly taken care of.

I am planning to go back to Andover the first of next week and if the opportunity offers I shall try to stop off for a minute at Camp Onaway as I go by, if not, I shall hope to stop in when I come up here again a bit later. I am inclosing a few stamps as requested, though why you should have difficulty in securing stamps at camp, I can't understand. I am sure if you ask your head councilor or Mrs. Hollister for them you will be provided with all you need.

My kindest regards and best wishes to you

Very sincerely yours,</text>

                <text>My dear Mr. Tsai:

Your interesting letter of May 24 reached me several days ago but, owing to the rush attending the closing of the school year, I have delayed my reply.

I am sorry that the cable message acknowledging the receipt of your remittances in the children's behalf failed to reach you. The two drafts, one of $9,000.00 and the other of $6,000.00, were duly received. I have deposited this amount to the joint account of the children and myself with the Andover savings Bank which pays a 5% interest as much as the Bank permits on limited deposits. A further balance above what I deem it wise to retain on the active checking account I have deposited with the Savings Department of the local National Bank which allows a 4% interest rate. As the checking account itself also accumulates a small interest, I think that the funds can now be said to be working as effectively and safely as could be desired.

Both of the children are now at summer camps, camps which have been selected with a good deal of care and where I believe the youngsters will receive the most wholesome influences, physically, intellectually, and morally. The camps are located on the same lake in New Hampshire but a few miles apart; so that it will be possible for Alfred and Helen to exchange visits occasionally. I stopped at Helen's camp a few days ago on my way down from my summer place in northern New Hampshire and had a chance to see the camp for myself and to talk with Helen and her councilors. Most of the girls are considerably younger than Helen, but I had felt that the extra advantages of the camp itself and of being near her brother would more than offset this particular limitation. Further, Helen has an exceptionally nice way of meeting those who are younger than herself and as she will very soon be thrown with older girls in school and elsewhere, I am not reluctant to allow her to continue for this short period, at least, the contact of those who will profit by her interest and leadership.

I doubt whether Alfred will be able to enter Phillips Academy next fall, though we can tell a bit better at the end of the summer. Evidently he needs another year of thorough grounding in elementary subjects before he can tackle successfully the higher subjects of our Junior or lowest class. I agree with you as to the unfortunate situation in which so many Western educated Chinese students find themselves at home, and I shall certainly have this in mind definitely in trying to figure out the lines along which Alfred should pursue his higher education. He is still very immature and has not developed that serious purpose and good judgment which will doubtless come with the passing years and which his sister possesses to an unusual degree for one of her age. Alfred works only under pressure, while Helen eagerly grasps whatever opportunities for learning come her way.

Thank you for your kind expressions of appreciation of what I have tried to do for your children and assuring you that it is a real pleasure to render this service to you and to them, believe me with kindest regards

Very sincerely yours,

Mr. Fucheng Seetoo was a student at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, from September, 1906, to June, 1908. He left the school to enter the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has since been pursuing with success his more advanced studies. Mr. Seetoo made an exceptionally fine record at Andover. Not only was his scholarship of a very high order, but he was faithful and dependable to an unusual degree. His habits were of the best, and his character clear and sound. I have every confidence in Mr. Seetoo and fully expect him to justify by his later career the high hopes which his American friends and instructors entertain for him.

                <text>My dear Mr. Cutler:-

Fucheng Seetoo, of whom you inquire, has been a student here during the past year. He is one of the boys brought over from China by Dr. Tenney, and is an excellent fellow. So far as I know him, his character is above reproach, and he gives promise of becoming a really brilliant scholar. Seetoo was here with plenty of funds at his disposal. Recently his father lost all his property in a typhoon which devastated the Chinese coast, and the boy is now very much reduced in his circumstances and obliged to cast in his lot with boys of limited means. He plans to return to us next fall as a scholarship student, and in view of the splendid record he has made this year, we are very glad to receive him on that basis. Like most of these Chinese boys, Seetoo is anxious to make his vacations count, and hence seeks the advantages offered at Northfield for the summer months. I am sure that you will find him a most reliable and attractive boy.

Sincerely yours,

                <text>Dear Mrs. Nye:

Thank you for your letter just received.

I am delighted to hear that Mr. Tsai is to allow Helen and Alfred to go back home this coming summer. It will mean a lot to them, I have no doubt. Just at present I am having some rather distressing interviews by letter and in person with the three Sun children, who are still in this country completing their ninth year away from home, and whose father seems determined to have them stay [illegible] longer. I say in this country, though that is not quite true, for Charlie has recently joined the Legation in London, though for how long is any one's guess. Mr. Sun, Sr., is obsessed with the notion so common among Chinese of his class that an American advanced degree, regardless of what the degree stands for, is going to prove an open sesame socially, politically, and intellectually to those who return with it to their homeland.

What you write of Mr. and Mrs. Tsai is immensely interesting and a bit amusing if it did not have a tragic element in it too. When Mr. Stimson, the present Secretary of State, when out to take charge of his Philippine job a couple of years ago, I gave him a letter of introduction to Mr. Tsai, whom he finally located in the Rockefeller Hospital in Peking under "treatment" for the same political illness which seems to have overtaken both him and his good wife lately. I don't see how any native Chinese with a reasonable amount of intelligence and vision, especially if he happens to have a little wealth besides, can negotiate life's path these days without going crazy.

With every best wish for the New Year, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>Dear Mr. Tsai:

Your generous and very deeply appreciated Christmas present was beautifully timed, for the tea reached me just the day before Christmas itself. Naturally I was delighted to have the tea, but even more pleased with the generous and friendly thought which I knew lay back of it and started it on its long journey.

As you had more than amply provided for my on personal needs, I have enjoyed greatly the privilege of sharing your gift with several close friends to whom I am under special debt, and who value as highly as I do a choice blend of tea. For this reason, you see, your gift has served a double purpose and has done some really worth while missionary work. Please understand that I have kept for my own use and for the entertainment of my friends in my home an ample supply.

I sent you Alfred’s last term report very recently and cannot refrain from commenting on the improvement which the boy has shown in his work this current school year. I think he is really beginning to find himself now and that the evidence of actual achievement is going to spur him to still greater endeavor. He and Helen are spending the holidays with their good friends, the Nyes, in South Weymouth, and Helen has written me enthusiastically of the fine time they are having.

Trusting that the New Year will bring you and your family all life’s richest and most enduring blessings, and with warm personal regards, believe me

Sincerely and gratefully yours,

Thank you for your note of December 26, signed by you and Alfred. I am sure you will find a lot that is stimulating in those books I gave you if you will take time to look them over. They are crammed full of worth while thoughts emanating from the best thinkers of every race and nation, past and present.

I am delighted that you are both having such a good time and hope that you appreciate what wonderful friends you have in the Nyes and will make them realize your appreciation by what you are able and willing to do for them in return.

The happiest of New Years to you both when that season arrives.
