<text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I feel quite sure that you will be interested in the attached copy of letter I have written to young Sun.
Through Mr. Edgar, President of the Boston Illuminating Company, and in turn through Mr. Moultrop, a friend of mine and their consulting engineer, approaches have been made to Messrs. Metcalf & Eddy and Messrs. Weston & Sampson, both of them very important firms in Boston, which have resulted in the invitation for young Sun to write them for an appointment. I do not doubt he will be able to make some connection with the one or the other.

In the course of my procedures in this matter, I have received some very good advice from a fellow college-mate by the name of Thaddeus Merriman, who is the son of Mansfield Merriman, past well known hydraulic engineer, and who, by the way, it was my pleasure to have as instructor at Lehigh University. This advice from Mr. Moultrop all checks up with Mr. Merriman’s suggestions.

I am sure looking forward to young Sun’s making a fine impression on both Mr. Eddy and Mr. Weston.

With sincere regards, -

Cordially yours,

What you have told me about Arthur Sun in your letter of October 7th is most interesting, and I shall be very glad indeed to do anything I can in the matter of the position he is seeking.

Your letter has reached me just at the moment I am taking a train from New York, but I shall return Monday and put out some feelers within the ranks of some of my engineering friends and shall hope shortly to report progress on this matter.

I would like very much to meet this young man, either in New York here or in Boston. I have to frequently go to Boston and perhaps it will be possible to make an appointment with him there. If you will let me have his address, I will write him in advance of one of my trips to Boston and thus arrange a conference with him. Your request carries no imposition whatsoever. On the contrary, it will give me a very great deal of pleasure to help and much more so to make it effective.

Through Dr. Stearns I have heard of your coming graduation at Technology, and have been putting out one or two lines in the hopes that I might find some position in your chosen field of sanitary engineering to start you off after you have left the institute.

My friend, Mr. I.E. Moultrop of Boston has made the suggestion that you call on two concerns; the first one, Metcalf & Eddy, and the second Weston & Sampson, both located at 14 Beacon Street, Boston,
Mr. Moultrop is acquainted with the senior partners of both of these firms and has talked with both Mr. Eddy and Mr. Weston. I would suggest, therefore, that you write letters; one to Mr. Eddy and one to Mr. Weston, using Mr. Moultrop’s name, asking for an appointment, which I believe, from what Mr. Moultrop has told me, will be granted; and I feel quite sure that these interviews will be very helpful to you.

I had been in hope, prior to this time, to meet you myself, but business down here has kept me away from Boston.

I wish you every possible success with your interviews, and will be glad to hear what may be the result.

                <text>My dear Irving:

Delighted to get your letter today.

I am not going to consider any of the possibilities that may deflect you from the Red Pencils, as I am counting on your being there. A change of climate is very essential to both you and Mrs. Moultrop.

May I take this opportunity to way that the following are advices on the young Chinese technology student, Arthur Sun.

He called on Mr. Weston and Mr. Eddy. Mr. Weston saw him but Mr. Eddy was away. Mr. Weston seemed to think that he had better hold on to his present job. He was very nice to him, however, and wants later to have him dine with him.

Young Sun, and I think he is right, wants to be affiliated with one of those two firms, and he is counting on an opportunity to go with Mr. Eddy’s firm. It is my understanding that Mr. Eddy returned to his office December 1st. Sun had a very nice talk with Mr. Eddy’s right hand man,	Mr. Frail, who asked him to fill in an application blank. He has done this.

I have	read a	letter that Sun has written to Dr. Stearns at Andover, and it has given me some good reactions
about him. If an opportunity lends, and I am not imposing too much, perhaps should you Know Mr. Frail or Mr. Eddy, you might

say a good word in his direction prior to the time the young man has his interview.

I have advised Dr. Stearns that it is best for Sun to hold on to his present job until he can land something with either Mr. Weston or Mr. Eddy.

With my best regards, -

Cordially yours,

WSM:R

                <text>Dear Dr. A. E. Stearns:

Permit me to introduce myself to you as a friend of Mr. K.Y.Tu. Having been with Mr. Tu for more than five years, I believe I know him quite well and quite intimately.

Probably you have learned that he has gone back to Huntington School this year. Judging from his recent attitude I know he is determined to finish the high school work in as short a period as possible. It is true that he has not made good scholastic records in the past years in this country; but this was due to his deep interest in practically all kinds of athletics and big circle of friends. He has been associated with people of high moral standing, and I can vouch for his exemplary character and conduct.

Mr. William Moy of Stone & Webster Co. has written to Mr. Tu’s father, giving his opinion of K. Y. and strongly recommening him for his father’s support at least through high school. I can reasonably believe that Tu’s father will accept Mr. Moy’s recommendation and continue to support him. However, at present K. Y. is trying in every possible way to get $100.00 to pay off part of his tuition; he is unsuccessful in that because all of his friends are students who have only limited means.

Consequently, I recommend him for your consideration, knowing that you have been K. Y.' s guardian and seeing that there is no other way whereby his friends can help him out.

If you wish to know me better, I have the liberty to refer you to Rev. Sidney Lovett of Mt. Vernon Church of Boston, and Mr. J. B. Watson of Boston City Y. M. C. A.

Yours truly,

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I am glad to inform you that Mr. Tu has recovered from his recent illness except feeling little weak in his legs.

He instructed me to write you that he had not received the check for #100.00 which you said you had mailed to him in the first part of June; but that he had received the check for the same amount for this month.

A few friends of Mr. Tu’s wish to visit you on some Sunday after the 15th of July on matters regarding Mr. Tu, and hope that you will be in Andover at that time and let us know of the time of the appointment.

Hope to hear from you soon

I am very sorry to inform you that Mr. K. Y. Tu has been sick for about two weeks and is now at the City Hospital suffering from rehaumatism. His doctor advised him to stay in the hospital for at least one month.

At present he does not have any more pain except feeling weak. Before he was sent into the hospital he had been under the treatment of Dr.Albert Evans, 416 Malboro St. Boston, who has sent a bill to Mr. Tu for about thirty or thirty-five dollars. Mr. Tu asked me to write you for $100.00. According to my and Mr. Tu’s idea, the doctor’s bill is much too high, and believe a less amount would be accepted if he is told of the financial condition of Mr. Tu. Tu hopes that you will write a letter to Dr. Evans to that effect.

Yours truly
