Dear Dr. Stearns,

I am now a graduate of Middlebury College. I received a higher average this semester than I have ever attained before . I received the following grades for the courses which I carried:

Constitutional Law 86
Government Finance 78
Labor 77
Society 86
Criminology 88
Average 83

I am quite proud of the fact that my average has improved from year to year. I started off in my freshman year with an average of 77 and ended up with 83. My average last semester was 80.0.

I am continuing on with Constitutional Law as the only undergraduate course that I ma taking. All my other work will be special research work. I am concentrating all my efforts on Political Science, and I hope that by the time I go to Harvard, I will be well prepared for the work there. I have already written to the Dean there asking for imformation[sic] concerning the same.

It may be a little bit too early, but I think that it is thr[sic] right time for me to ask you for the money to buy the car which you said will be all right for me to have. I have been to several places., and it seems to me that by the time the snow goes off the ground, many other people will want cars, and consequently the price of last year’s Ford will go back to normal. I saw a new Ford of last year's model for the price of $510.00. The dealer said that by the first of March the price will go back to 575.00, which is the regular price for cars of that type, and the cheapest. Thee[sic] are several others that want to buy the same car, and if I can have the money by the end of this week, I think I can buy that car for 510.00 instead of $575.00. I think that it is really better for me to buy that car now. I can store it right in the garage for nothing till the time comes for me to take it out. It will be cheaper by $65.00. I saw the new models this Christmas in New York, and there are no changes except in the body. So there are little difference between the old and the new. There now just as much demand for the old as there is for the new ones. So I think if you will give me the money $510 now by the end of the week, I will be able to save a lot of money.

I received a letter from Charlie the other day, and it seems that he is nono too happy there. But that is only natural, being a strange place to him, But after he makes some friends there, I am sure that he will feel different toward the place.

I received several letters from Mary in the last few weeks, and she is very happy. She is very busy, but she enjoys being that way there. She asked me to spend the summer with her in Ithaca. I originally planned to be in Harvard Summer school this summer to get an early start toward the Doctor’s degree which I hope to get in time. I have make no definite plans however.

Please let me have the money for the car by the end of this week. By the middle of the week if it is convenient for you to do so. It will save me a lot of money, for this is the best time of the year to buy a car, and the cheapest time. The amount of $510.00.

Very sincerely yours</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

I just received my marks for the last semester.

A general improvement in every subject except one.

Public Speaking and Debating	00

Political Science	—	77

Economics 70

Physical education	75

Commercial and Industrial Geography—81 Ave	-78.6

My Public Speaking and debating mark did not change. My mark in Political Science increased from 74 to 77. Economics mark was decreased from 72 to 70. The Geography mark improved from 70 pf last semester to 81 of this semester. The Physical Education is a new semester course, which I started this last semester. Public Speaking, Economics, and Political Science are Year Courses, with a comprehensive examination in June, and the other two courses are semester courses.

My average last semester in February was something like 76.6, and this semester is 78.3, an improvement of two points in average. I hope this will be satisfactory.

                <text>My dear Mr. Stearns,

Isn’t it funny that I should write letter-heads of my letters as the above? It struck me rather queer that I should type the "U.S.A." after the usual "Andover, Mass.", but come to think of it, I am in another country now.

Funny--just by crossing an ocean. When I touched Chinese soil for the first time in eleven years, I felt both joyful and sad. The two feelings mingled into a more or less fantastic ecstasy lost in the thrill of the moment. I looked around me--surely, this is my country. Honest faces, unknown to me, yet existing bv the millions in this land of "the dragon", --honest faces that bear the mark of centuries of toil.

As I stepped off the gangplank, I sought to grasp the hand of someone near-by just to show others that I do have a friend in my own country, but none was extended. It was a rather cold reception. I spied Arthur with Mr. Souter and Mr. Fitch, good friends of my Father, and they waited patiently till the kind custom officer finished with me.

Driving through Shanghai, I sat in the car dumb-founded--dumb-founded because of the visible potentiality of a great people. It is a potentiality that far surpassed the most ardent of my patriotic dreams. Ah, if only they are given a chance in this world of chances. Let them, or give them a chance, to express themselves, they ought to be the greatest people on the face of this world.

The car came to a sudden stop. We stepped out and proceeded into a hotel where I met Father in his room. I said, "Hello, Dad" in the true American tune and extended my right hand to him. He grasped it and looked at me into my misty eyes, and smiled without a word. He shook my hand, but his hand was weak. From the conversation, I gathered that he had been dangerously ill for some time, and he just arrived in Shanghai that very morning after arising out of a sick-bed in the north. His health is fast losing his old vigor. Mary and I tried to make him to go back to Tientsin so as to be away from his well-intentioned, but at times annoying, friends and have a real rest along with the rest of the family. But he stoutly refused claiming that he has some business in Shanghai which he can not put off. Now he has finished that business and is looking for something else to do in Shanghai, while Mary and I are longing to be back in Tientsin--the old home town. The thing is that I haven’t seen Mother yet, because she did not come down with Dad to meet us. Father begs you to forgive him for not writing because of his ill-health and commanded me to send to you his very best regards and deepest appreciation of whatever you had done to evolve his upstart children into college graduates.

Now, at this juncture, it may be proper for me to give you some of my impressions of my home country. My views, let me assure you, are not biased because of the pure fact that I am half foreigner by my education and living. I can not talk every time I ride through the city of Shanghai. I saw three and half millions of people living under subjection of a so-called superior race of the white uniformed men with rifles with bayonets fixed. It is truly humiliating to realize that a nation with four hundred million population should be so humble as to "take it on the chin" for so long. Then the question arises as to whether or not the Chinese are fit to rule themselves or are the foreigners afforded adequet [sic] protection with the much talked about and hated extraterritoriality. To any ordinary Chinese, the answer is apparent--so apparent as to need no discussion whatsoever. My education in the States, and especially my experience as the president of my fraternity in Middlebury taught me that if a person is given a chance to show up his best quality, he can not fail to do so provided he is given a free hand to do so (of course within reason). I have said in a previous paragraph that the Chinese is potentially a great race if they are only given a chance to express themselves. I repeat that again here with unlimited emphasis. I have seen my countrymen and countrywomen by the thousands living in humble circumstances--so humble as to be degrading. Why so degrading? Because of the civil wars? Yes. Because of the foreigners? Yes. Because of their willingness to live thus rather than be a decent and respectable citizen of the community? To answer that I must change the reply into a capitalized NO.

The three questions might be all linked into one circumstance or a series of circumstances. Why the civil wars? To answer that question, one must ask, "why the foreigners?". In former years, China was contented and was progressing in her own way by being happy and content. After all being happy and content is progress in the Chinese way of thinking. It is not progress to own two automobiles on the installment plan and have the monthly salaries spent three or four years before hand. That may stimulate industry into greater production, but why do that when money is merely "forthcoming” instead of already ready cash? That is all besides the point, but Chinese (to get back at the subject) is a progressive people.

The foreigners come into the country and create the most spectacular problem for whatever government in power to deal with. Being astute politicians valuing the public opinion highly, the government in power naturally make the foreigners its main issue and rise and fall with it, because in that issue, the government can always find public approval if succeeded. Thus everytime the government makes a move to establish the Chinese on basis of equality as the foreigners, the allied nations immediately dust off a volume of document and point to a phrase of an obscure and expired treaty with the Manchus. Will the foreigners believe that that phrase is against all decency and morality of internationality dealings? No. Then the foreigners will ask "Why won’t the government center its attention on interior affairs rather than on foreign affairs?". The answer to that is also apparent. Foreign affairs is more popular with the people, just because the Veteran’s Bonus Law is popular with the American public. It is patriotic--spectacularly patriotic, and the politicians are looking for things of that sort.

If one government fail, another faction will start a civil war and try to try its hand at it. As a result, civil wars are common. In this respect, the Chinese people can not be cursed not blamed for the civil wars. Blame the few men who has power and money. If they are captured, they ought to be put to a slow death lasting painfully for months.

Give China a free hand, and the world will witness the most amazing rise of the most amazing nation. Just give them a chance. You can tell from the faces of the people here that they are capable and willing. I am writing this to you, not because I am connected in any way yet with the Chinese government, but I think I am doing the duty of a common Chinese towards his country. Men in your station, I know, will understand and use influence toward the end of international decency and morality, honesty and fairness, and tolerance and friendliness. With that I resign from the subject.

As for the trip across the pacific, the ocean was so calm as to be monotonous. There is little I can tell you, because I know Mary wrote you from every stop. I would have done so, but I have an inherent contempt for postal cards and the subsequent entries therein. I am sure Mary conveyed my best to you as I asked and hoped that she should do. Otherwise, I humbly apologize.

With that I close with kindest regards to Miss Clemens and Marjory and deepest appreciation of your most thoughtful kindness to Arthur, Charlie, Mary, and myself. My father and Mother join me in sending greetings.

Yours forever

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

By the contents of the enclosed papers, I am sure, you immediately came to the conclusion that I am again asking you for some more money. In truth, I am.

College bills took most of the last amount you sent to me last time, and everyday expenses took the rest, I still have some left in the bank, but not a very substantial amount--about fifty dollars. With the approach of Easter vacation, I hope to go away for a few days, and my present finances will not permit me to do that, I am also having my pictures taken for the first time for a long time, I shall leave it all to you as regards to the amount you will send to me, but I hope it shall not fall below three hundred dollars. With that I hope to last through the year.

I have heard several times from home during the past month, but I failed to find anything concerning the prospects of my going home this summer. I looked into my diary the other day and calculated that you wrote to Father about the first of February and Mary wrote about a week later. If that is true, no answer will probably be received till the middle or the end of next month. Furthermore, I think Father will delay answering such a request for some time allowing him time to think the matter over.

Mary is rather expectant and practically sure that I will be going home with her. In fact, I am hoping secretly that I may go myself. However, I am making preparations for further study, because in case I can not go, it will not be too much of a disaapointment [sic] with me, and on the other hand, I will be able to embark with more enthusiasm.

Mary is still uncertain as to the time she is going to leave. She is waiting to hear from home about my prospects, and in case I can go with her, she will probably decide a time sometimes during the latter part of July or the first part of August. I could get nothing definite from her, and she is constantly changing her plans concerning when to quit her position, and when to sail. I think, though, she has decided that she will not want to go home by way of Europe. I hope to see her to-morrow night, and if I can, I shall try to get her to decide definitely regardless of me.

In the meantime, if you hear anything from Father, I shall be most anxious to learn of it.

Weighing the situation from all angles, I am afraid that Father is not very keen on my going home this summer. And if he should decide in my favor, I think he will ask me to come back after a year’s stay. Looking at the facts away from the sentimentalities of homesickness, Father is rather insistent on my getting a Doctor’s degree. He wrote to me several times that his desire is to see me come home a most "learned scholar". The meaning of his intention is apparent, and if he is stubborn, I see no way out of staying here for two more years and may be three.

Frankly, I am rather fed-up on studying. I want to get out and work. Although, my age is tender, I think I have seen enough of life to make me to want to SETTLE DOWN. During the course of my college days I have become rather frank and willing to look at things in a rather counter- conventional standpoint, as against the customary run of things. However, I am not in anyway radical--not even socialistic. But just modern. With that in view, I hope my viewpoint of things may be better understood. With that, I think I prefer to leave that particular remark more or less in-the- air.

With kind regards to Miss Clemens and Marjory.

Sincerely yours

P. S. I am sending to you my complete account, an itemized graph from day to day, so that you can see just where my money is going, and also you will be able to understand my expenses by looking at the continuity and average of expenditures. I hope the "tables" will help you to “connect up" from one day to another my expenses.</text>

I am sorry that Mary kept you uncertain as to the trip to Europe.

I shall apologize for the little oversight on her part. I am sure that she did not understand the difficulties connected with such tasks as arrangement of steamship passages and passports.

She received your letter shortly after the news of the three deaths at home reached her, and consequently she did not feel very much disposed to answer her correspondance [sic]. She told me about it some time ago, and I took it for granted that she had already answered you until I received word from you to the contrary. She was very despondent at the time and had nothing else in mind but going home. I am sure she did not mean to cause you all the anxiety.

She said to me definitely that she does not wish to make the trip to Europe. It is not that she does not appreciate what Father intended for her, but she just couldn’t wait till she can go home.

As I wrote you in my last letter to you, Mary had written home making overtures to father about my going home with her this summer. In case if she succeeds, she plans to leave sometimes in the latter part of July or the first part of August, otherwise I think she will leave at the earliest possible moment. However, I shall ask her to write to you definitely concerning her plans.

Again, permit me to apologize for her.

Very sincerely yours</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have received your good letter of the 24th of this month, and want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for your kind efforts and sympathy toward me.

I have telephoned to Mary concerning her trip to Europe and arrangement of her passage by you. She said rather definitely that she does not wish to make the trip. The reasons she gave for it are, in the first place, she will be very sea-sick, and in the second place, the trip involves time and expense which she could use very well by going home. As far as the passage goes, you can be pretty sure that it will be all right for you to drop all negotiations for them.

I have just taken my last examination, and I think I have fared pretty well. However, the marks won’t be out for some time. I am expecting to do pretty well in all the courses, unless I am sorely disappointed and disillusioned.

Sincerely yours</text>
