<text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

At last I have graduated from Middlebury College. I received my diploma this morning at the exercises.

When I was down at Andover the last time, you said something that you will try to secure for me a position under Secretary Stimson at Washington or at the Chinese Legation. I wonder whether you have written to either place. I am rather anxious to know because I want to make and complete arrangements down at Yale this summer.

Things for me this summer here at Middlebury are well arranged, I am taking three courses and vagabond as many more as I care to and besides I am being tutored three times a week. All the work are for reading and I am picking up conversation from speaking all the time. One has to speak French here at Middlebury during the summer, and besides all the courses will be taught in French, so that conversational French will not be missed although not taking a course in it.

I am going down to New York this week to see some of the alumni concerning the house, and I have also several dinners and engagements to attend. I expect to be there for not more than a week. Then I am coming back to Middlebury to get things ready for summer school.

My adress [sic] will be this summer

K. D. R. House
Middlebury, Vermont.

Please let me hear from you.

Sincerely</text>

Office of the Headmaster Phillips academy Andover, Mass.

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I am sending you an itemized account of my expenditures to date. I hope that it will be satisfactory. I need some more money at this time as in other years. The amount will be the same, $500.00.

As you know, summer is always a problem for me. I have no home to go to, and I have to exist on "room and board". I am going to New York after graduation till summer school anyway. And then I want to know what to do.

If you will send me the money some time this week, I will appreciate it very much, because there are several things which I want to do, and at present I have no money to do them with. So if I can have the money by this week, it will be more than appreciated.

I plan to come to Andover to have a talk with you concerning several things. They are of most importance to me, and I can not afford to let them slip by. One of which is my situation, that is to say how much Americanized I am and how I will fit back there in China. Everyone so far has not give me much thought concerning this, and I think it is of vital importance to me. I will try to get down the first of June.

Please try to send me the money the first part of this month if possible.

Sincerely yours

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

At this time each year, I am usually lost at sea as to where I should go during the summer. This year, I am even more so, Originally I planned to travel some the first part of the summer and very extensively toward august. But since there is no car at my disposal this summer, I had to abandon the idea. Now I am confronted with something new.

I usually go to summer school during the summer. But this summer I am not very anxious to do so. It may be that I have been to summer school three sumers [sic] while I was in school trying to catch up, and two summers while I am in college trying to get ahead. I think I have enough of it. What I like to do this summer is to go where I please. But there are other things to consider. I have to have French—a reading knowledge--by a year from this coming fall. I have been thinking of staying here for the French School. For that purpose I went to see the Dean of the school, and he told me that what they do mostly during the summer is to get a conversational knowledge rather than reading knowledge. So it is rather impractical to come to Middelbury [sic]. Mary asked several time to go to Ithaca with her and spend the summer with her. Ithaca may be a nice place, but there is nothing to offer me in the line of what I want. I also have thought of going to New York again, and stay at the International House and take lessons from a real Frenchman, and hope in that way to get a reading knowledge. I can not decide what I will do. I don’t like the city, especially during the summer, but it is the most practical. In this respect I seek your advise.

But I do wish I can travel this summer though. I received a letter from Mary a few days ago, and she seemed to be rather anxious about the car also. I have not written to her and tell her the consequences as yet.

One other thing that bothers me. In case if I do go to summer school, what will I do between the time after graduation and the time summer school starts? There are about six weeks there, and I surely can not pass those six weeks just sitting around. I have to do something. And furthermore what am to do during the time after summer school and before the regular session starts at Yale? There are again about six weeks there, and surely I do not want to sit around for twelve weeks. The result in which case will probably be that in the end I will be sitting in an insaned [sic] hospital. Please advise me concerning what I shall do. I am in such a desparate [sic] mood, I am ready to take most offers. This year is different for me. I am graduating this June, and therefore I can not stay in the Fraternity House after college closes as I have been doing in the past.

Can’t you see some way clear so that a car will be possible? It will help the situation a lot.

I have been busy trying to put out another issue of the "Circle", our official chapter publication. It has been rather hard until recently when I received some help from some of the brothers. I hope to have the paper in press to-morrow, and it probably come out Monday or Tuesday.

Please consider my situation and advice [sic] me accordingly.

Sincerely yours</text>

Your letter of the 17th was received.

I am surprised to hear that Father intended that I should that I should go back at the same time that Mary goes back. Now I am enrolled in Yale, the Master’s degree is a two- year course, and the Doctor’s degree is a three year’s course, I have good intentions of finishing up with the Doctor’s degree--that is, however, is I get the Master's degree. I have never told you outright, perhaps, that I have no intention of doing further studying. I am going to Yale because I want to please father. I know that he will be disappointed otherwise. Well, that is settled.

I had an occassion [sic] to see Mary while I was down in New Haven. We came to the conclusion that it will be all right if we buy a car. She will put up one hundred and fifty dollars($150) and I will put up two hundred and fifty dollars ($250). Then we will be able to buy a second Ford. I am sure that I will not abuse the privilege. So if you will send me four hundred dollars, $150 of it will come out of Mary’s account and 250 dollars will come out of my account. We agreed on that ratio. I know of one car now in town, new last fall, which he said that he will be willing to sell for four hundred dollars. I hope that you will consent to this. If you will send me four hundred dollars by next week, I will be more than appreciative. I hope sincerely that you will see to it. It will mean a lot to me.

I expect a letter from Yale in a few days formally accept me into the graduate school.

Sincerely yours</text>

I just had a conference with Dr. Furniss, the associate dean of the graduate school. To make the story short, I was admitted.

One significant feature of Yale is that they will not confer a master's degree until the student has completed two years residence. Requirement for doctor's degree is like other colleges, three years. Therefore, all the course requirements for PhD can be completed in the first two years, and the third year will be spent to write the thesis, which must be acceptable to be published in book form.

I saw Mary last night and am having lunch with her this noon. I am going back to Middlebury this afternoon arriving there to-night. If you wish to write me, please write me there.

Sincerely yours Thomas Sun</text>

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have received a letter from Yale University. I already sent in my application with the necessary credentials and information.

In case if you wish to write favor to them, there are three possible persons who are more influential, the Dean of graduate school, Mr. Wilbur L. Cross, the associate dean, Mr. Edgar S. Furniss; the third is the head of the department of political science, whose name I do not know.

I am asking wither Mr. Cross or Mr. Furniss for a conference for next week, so as to give you ample time to write.

Your immediate advise and action will be appreciated.

Sincerely

                <text>My dear Miss Greenwood,

In your letter of Feb. 11th, you said that Mr. Hopper in the Treasurer's office can advance me the money should I need any. I wish to take this opportunity to exercise that privilege.

As you probably know that around this time of each year, I ask Dr. Stearns for the money for expenses for Easter vacation and the Spring term. The usual amount is 350.00 or 400.00 dollars. This year, I think I will need around 400.00 dollars. If you will please ask Mr. Hopper to send me that money, I will be very thankful indeed.

I have the report of my expenses for ready on hand, and I shall mail it to Dr. Stearns the winter session upon his arrival.

I am sure that you know exactly the date of Dr. Steams' return from Europe. If you will please diverge to that information I will be very thankful. I plan to visit him this Easter, and I do not want to be there during the midst of his work which he surely has to catch up.

Please mail the money so that I will be able to receive it by the first or the middle of the coming week.

Sincerely yours

I was surprised to hear that Dr. Stearns had gone to Europe. I thought that I would have been informed of that fact should he planned to go there.

I am sorry that you do not think that Mr. Hopper will advance me the money to buy the car without Dr. Stearns sanction. I have talked over the matter with him this Christmas when I was in Andover, and he was all in favor of it. He told me that I may buy one, a Ford, after the new models come out. The new ones came out this Christmas. The only reason that I want to buy it now and not later is the fact that the demand for cars are now low, and hence the prices of them are also low. But when Dr. Stearns comes back from abroad, the time will be the most important time, because all the people will want to buy cars, and hence the price will go up. To buy cars now is most economical at this time of the year.

I hope that you will give the matter another consideration. I have talked with Dr. Stearns concerning the car which I plan to buy this year after my graduation from Middlebury this Mid-Years. Now I have graduated. He gave me his consent concerning the same, and I was going to wait till now to ask him for the money for it.

Sincerely yours
