Sun, Tientsin, April 17, 1928 Relation A related resource My Dear Mr. Sun: A short time ago I received word from the Dean of Elmira College that Mary's work in at least two subjects was very unsatisfactory and that her status in the college was consequently precarious. I wrote at once to the dean and asked for a frank analysis of the situation as the college authorities viewed it, and I am enclosing herewith a copy of the Dean's reply. Mary's case has worried me a good bit for some time. Early in the year she wrote me a letter, prompted evidently by her dissatisfaction with her work and distress over the situation in general. It has been my feeling that Mary has plenty of ability to meet the college demands, even on the basis of her present schedule of work, but that her utter lack of interest in most of the subjects she is taking and her failure to find in the general college course that which she believes will be of value to her in later life have completely undermined her ambition and that without that ambition progress has been rendered practically impossible. I still feel that, if Mary’s interest in nursing, for example, could be encouraged and permission given her to shape her work along that general line, it would mean a complete change in the picture, and for the better. Dean Harris evidently shares my views, though I do not recall that I have ever discussed this particular phase of the matter with her; nor did I know before that Elmira College provided a course of this kind. Very probably Mary herself may have told the Dean of her ambition, though I can only guess as to that. As I view the matter now, it looks very much as if the college authorities would feel that Mary's work did not justify them in allowing her to return her membership in the college much longer and complete the college course and graduate. Frankly, I should be very anxious as to the effect on Mary of a forced termination of the college career. Such a distressing outcome should be avoided if possible, and I am beginning to wonder whether that can be done without altering completely Mary's present course of study and allowing her to choose a different goal and one more in accord with her natural tastes and ability. I shall, of course, accept your judgment in the matter and urge Mary, as I have always done in the past, to abide by your wishes and do her best to justify your hope; but these latest reports from Elmira naturally make me anxious and lead me to wonder whether we are handling the case to the best advantage of all concerned. May I rely on you to advise me frankly on receipt of this letter just what I ought to do under the circumstances. Please give my warmest regards to Arthur, and believe me with constant good will. Our doubt is in regard to her interest. Is it not possible that her father might be induced to approve of a shift in her college course which would allow her to do what a number of American girls are doing here. The course they take is a five year course. If Mary took it it would be necessary for her to work three more years. The five year course specializes here at the college in Physical Sciences and allows the student to take practical work and instruction at the Arnot Ogden Hospital so that at the close of the fifth year they are able to graduate with a B. S. degree from this college and to take their diploma in nursing at the hospital. This program calls for summer appointments at the hospital and is likely to take also other vacations but the girls who are taking the course are full of enthusiasm and do not seem to grudge the time that is stolen from what would otherwise be recreation. If Mary Sun’s people desire for her the advantages of a thorough college education and if they are willing to compromise with her in the way I suggest it may be that her problem will be solved. If you are in correspondence with her parents or can bring pressure to bear through other friends in China it seems to me that a very great kindness would be done both to the family and to Mary. If something of this kind can be arranged I think that so far as the college is concerned Miss Sun’s present low stand work will be overlooked in the hope of better results next year. If something of this kind cannot be done it seems to me unjust to the girl and her classmates and the college for the present situation to continue. Our president, Dr Frederick Lent, is and has been for some weeks quite ill so that it is and has been impossible to report any college matters to him. I feel however that he is likely to approve the plan I suggest and I shall be interested to hear what you, who know more about the conditions at Miss Sun’s home, regard as possible. I am wondering if you would be willing to write me frankly just what Mary’s difficulties seem to be and what advice you have to offer that would perhaps aid us in contributing to their remedy. Naturally I feel a pretty big responsibility for these foreign wards of mine, and Mary has always been a problem. On the whole, though, when she was here she worked hard at her studies, but I have never been able to feel that she had given her best to the work at Elmira, and largely, I judge, because of no real interest in it. She has pleaded for several years now to be allowed to study nursing, a plan of which her father has never approved. On the other hand, she has often expressed her lack of enthusiasm for the work which she is doing, and I am afraid that it is the reflection of this attitude that accounts in large measure for the poor results. Sun, a Chinese ward of mine now at Amherst College. I have filled out the blank and am returning it herewith, but I can’t refrain from adding a personal word in Sun’s behalf. Charles Sun is a rare boy, a fine scholar, a perfect little gentleman. and as clean and wholesome as they are made. He comes from one of the best families in China, his father having served during the war as Head of the Chinese Red Cross and as heads of various other philanthropic organizations both before and since the war. Charlie lived in my house for several years while he was in school here, and I know him in consequence pretty intimately and this leads me to recommend him to you almost without reservation. I am sure you would find him a wonderfully helpful member of your force, and I am sure, too, that it would be a splendid thing for your boys to get this intimate and friendly contact with such a clean-cut and wholesome representative of his race. It helps mightily to break down prejudices and that’s worth a good deal in itself.
