I am frequently out of town and in this particular case had been away for almost all of a ten day period at the time your request arrived. Consequently I could not send the money until it was a bit too late for your purposes. In view of the fact that I sent you $50. 00 instead of the $95.00 asked for, I am both surprised and distressed that you should have made the long and expensive trip to Arm Arbor. As I explained in my letter yesterday, from January,1925, to January, 1926, your accounts show that you spent between $2900.00 and $3000.00, a tremendously excessive amount, and in view of your father’s recent and explicit instructions to me urging retrenchment, I felt and so wrote you that you simply could not afford to take a trip covering a week or ten days, only, and involving the enormous expense of practically $100.00. Under the circumstances I don’t feel that I have any right to send you the additional check at this time, for I don’t feel that you are carrying out either your father’s wishes or my own.
