<text>I5th, December, 1937

My dear Mr. and Mrs. Stearns

I have before me two letters from you which touch me deeply by its kindness. I hesitate to remark on them because I feel that it is beyond my ability to put down in words my feeling of appreciation. However, I will say that they constitute the only two rays of friendship and kindness that the sharpest pair of eyes can gather from the much disturbed horizon. Your offer of bountiful hospitality touches one that above the clouds there is still something finer and greater in this world of ours so as to leave us yet another ray of hope for the brotherhood, of all an at a time when discouragement and disillusion push us to the brim of pessimism.

It is not that my reluctant declination of your hospitality an unwillingness of my part to part with the children, but it Is the realization that during those troublous times one feels more assured to have all one's loved ones near at hand. Day to day existence has few luxuries and whatever little there is left of it is being enjoyed to the fullest extent. At any rate they will be worthless of your generosity and kindness. Nevertheless I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart and my little family joins me to extend to you our profoundest gratitude and appreciation.

It is unnecessary for me to elaborate the inner thoughts running through the minds of everyone of us, and it should be sufficient to say that the finer things in life are being replaced by things of ghastly appearance - its extent being even undreamt of by Him to whom we all owe allegiance. Things beautiful and peaceful are being removed by stark realities of which we have only read hut never saw till now.Things forced us to turn away, things obligating us to forget ourselves, and things pushing us on into even greater grotesquely deeds are changing the meaning of life to which most of us hold dear. One often wonders why doesn't one throw up his hands in despair and proclaim that if such is the thing that man has learned, let me be a beast.

At times like these one tends to wander his mind to days of happier background. I can still remember the night when I stepped off in Andover from the train now seventeen years ago. You were there and later piloted us to the home where we all, and I in particular, spent many receptive days. I still remember the days spent in Stowe school, and then Andover, and hence to Middlebury and Yale. Some of those days wore anything but easy, but as one grows in years and experience, these become an inseparable part of an indispensable education. I had hopes, then. High hopes But now all is empty except the inner will. Where are the things which are said to be fine and beautiful? Where are the things for which we are taught respect?

My father and his family are still in Tientsin and by the latest reports he is still in good health. As for Arthur and Mary, they are still in Shanghai and Peiping respectively. Although we have tried to gather all together, but for some reason or the other, we have never been successful. However, in the near future, if circumstances permit, we shall have another attempt.

My little family is well, or as well as an be expected under the circumstances. I have, as you know, two boys aged two and four. Happily they are still in their innocent and ignorant days. I shall certainly do my best to bring then up in the best atmosphere possible. Our home is in a comparatively safe zone at the present writing. I am up against the difficulty in that I am the sole dependent of my entire little family all members of whom are extremely young and quite inexperienced in what you might say worldly ways. However, I have been getting along, and barring things unforeseen, we should get along even through this crisis, although with the attendant uncertainty.

Please accept my whole-hearted thanks and appreciation for your most generous offer. I regret that I shall be unable for reasons as above to avail myself of the privilege, but I shall keep this kindness in my heart and shall not forget the motive which prompted it in the years to come. My wife joins me to extend to you our most sincere greetings of the season in grateful appreciation.

yours most sincerely

My dear Dr. and Mrs. Stearns,

It is appropriate that I should write you on this day to convey to you the greetings of the season from My Father's entire family. This day is a significant one especially for those of us who had in years past shared the joys and happiness that only Christmas can imply. Those gatherings on Christmas Eve on Chapel Avenue have always lingered in my memory and now return most vividly. Such treasured recollection reminds us of the spirit of Yuletide, and, therefore, even years afterwards from across the sea this spirit is again alive in bidding you a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year.

Father wrote me some time ago instructing me to make a purchase of a worthy gift for you for this occasion. The lateness of this letter and the dispatch of the gift under separate cover is due to the disturbed conditions in China with its consequential effects on the smooth functioning of postal services. I have chosen four pieces of silk embroidery which represent the finest of Chinese art, and your acceptance is solicitated as an expression of the esteem and appreciation held for you by my Father and his entire family. He wishes to be remembered to you most cordially and will write you separately from Tientsin bidding you good health and happiness.

My Father regrets for not being able to send you the gift himself and apologizes sincerely. As you can appreciate Tientsin has been beleaguered for some months and nothing worthy of the yule-tise season can be bought in that port. Therefore, he deputizes me the honor which I hope will not belittle his sincerity.
Christmas in China finds us under difficult circumstances. It is, however, gratifying to feel that you are enjoying the season under conditions ideally suited for the festivities.

My Father can not let this year pass without some reflections of its doings and undoings. In general fortune has been kind to his family, but even this blessing in the midst of disturbance is far from the desirable condition under which well intentioned people hopes to live. His Health has been,on the whole, good and is enjoying unusual vigor for a man of his age. He had sold his house on Hongkong Road and is now living at his new address at 103 Wellington Road, Tientsin. By next spring, should	circumstances permit, he even hopes to migrate to the south, his birth-place. Arthur is still in Shanghai. His family is again visited by fate in the form of the loss of another son. He has one now. Mary is still in Peiping. As for myself, I am, as you can see, still in Shanghai in my old position.

Those of us who owe you so much hopes that this coming year will bring you an additional measure of happiness and good health. My Father feels certain that your well-earned rest is a source of joy and contentment to you when you can devote your time to the welfare of those less fortunate. He wishes you long life and happiness and strength and that the future be one of abundance and plenty. Arthur, Mary, and myself join him in sending to you and Mrs. Stearns our heart-felt greetings of the Season.

Most sincerely yours

Dr. Alfred E. Stearns,
12, Locke Street,
Andover, Massachusetts, U. S. A.

My dear Dr. Stearns,

Your letter dated the 7th November, last year, was waiting for me when I returned from a tour of inspection to the South. My tour began toward the end of last year and took me to most centers of population where my company maintains an organization. The letter was forwarded to me in Indo-China but was reforwarded to me here in Shanghai after I left that Country.

It has been a long time since we communicated with each other. During these intervening years many things had happened and it is fortunate, indeed, to even now possess good health and be able to write to those whose friendship one treasures.

China in general and I myself in particular had gone through difficult times. Our war with Japan caught me in Shanghai employed with my present company in the capacity of assistant manager. In the general migration away from the scene of hostilities., some were left behind and I was among this group who remained to guard the interests of the company. It was no easy task. During these war years, my Father and Mother remained in Tientsin, too old to follow the tide westward and I, together with my family, did the best we could whilst maintaining our principles. It was during this period that the teachings impounded into me during my boyhood days steered a straight and narrow course and guided my conscience despite of the carnage around me.

Ancient Asia was transformed and in place of the peace and happiness which we enjoyed during the years immediately prior to the war, there was madness. And when it came to pass that we are again to enjoy our peaceful lives, social transformation by forceful means befall us.

However, despite of all these, I am happy to be able to say that both myself and my own family are well. I am now the Assistant General Manager of my company. We have branches and agencies throughout the Far East and I am happy in the belief that at least through my own company that I may be of service to my country.

My father is now eighty-six years of age. He still lives in Tientsin. He was seriously ill last winter but is now well again. There were some quite anxious days when he first became ill. Before I could arrange things so that I could be with him, communications with Shanghai was cut. But through friends, I am informed that he is well again. I am still unable to secure means to visit him. The last letter received from him was dated last year. However, news is encouraging and I look forward to the day when it will be possible to have uninterrupted communication with my Father.

I very much regret the lateness of this letter, but believe me I have thought of you and forever I shall be indebted to you. One can never treasure too highly the fullness of one's youth. In this, I had my fullest with you.

My kindest regards to Mrs. Stearns, Charlie and Margaret. Please let me hear again from you and I promise that with every opportunity I shall not fail to write to you my benefactor.

For ever yours
Tommie Sun
