<text>My dear Mr. Stearns,

This is to inform you that I get through for Christmas vacation on the 20th of this month. I expect to leave for Boston that afternoon, I will arrive in Boston that night. I will stay in Boston that night, and I expect to come out to Andover the next day, the 21st. In case if that day does not suit, please let me know, and I will be glad to change the date. That date, however, is the one best suited for me, because I expect to go down to New York to see Mary after I see you. But, if the date does not suit you, I think I can manage to change a date with Mary. I wrote her to-night that I will be able to go down there on the 22nd or the 23rd to see her.

Please write me and let me know whether the 21st will be all right with or not.

Sincerely yours</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

I am enclosing a copy of my account for my expenses for the past fall. I hope that it is a satisfactory one. I have a more detailed one, and I will be glad to send it to you if you wish it.

You can see well, that making the football team is an expensive proposition. The trips to the other colleges cost quite a bit. In fact the coach encouraged amusement both before and after the game. The trip to Columbia University is an expensive one, because we went down there two days early and came back one day late. The other item of expense on that account is the cost of tuxedo. I figured that I rather buy one that is half decent rather than one that I could get for 19.00 dollars. Besides these two items the other expenses are annual, such as the college bills and the house bills.

I have a few bills yet to be paid which amount to about fifty dollars such as a overcoat, overshoes, Christmas cards, etc. This Christmas I expect to go to Boston and then to Andover to talk things over with you, and then I will go to New York where I expect to see Mary. I have been thinking seriously of remaining here for the second semester instead of going to either Harvard or Columbia. I have been elected Chapter Editor in Chief of the Delta Epsilon paper which is a whole year's office, and I stand an excellent chance of getting the Chapter Presidency, and in case if I should get such offices, it is only right that I should remain here till my term expires which will be after the second semester starts. Furthermore, if my father insists that I should go to Harvard, I will have to have both German and French. I have no knowledge of German whatsoever, and only slight knowledge of French. If such be the case, I think I rather stay here for studying both of those languages. However, I will make no further remarks till I have a talk with you.

I will need another $550.00 to last me till Easter, During that time, I expect to have Mary up here for a few days for a visit which will cost in the neighborhood of $50. That money will take care of all the expenses which I will incur during that period. If you will let me have that money by the end of this week or the first of next week, I will appreciate it very much. I like to pay those bills off as soon as possible.

At the beginning of next week, there will be another collection in the house, I think, for money to purchase a new piano, and I like to contribute my share. So by the first of next, please let me have the money.

Sincerely

My dear Dr. Stearns,

Enclose please find the letter yesterday from Charlie Undoubtedly, I turn to you for advise and consolation. This is the first time that I have learned that father’s condition is rea serious and the letter came so suddenly while I was in a good mo strucks me especially hard.

For the past few months I have known that my father has some trouble, but it never occurred to me that it was serious as to cause him unconscious. Unconsciousness for 24 hours is very dangerous specially for an old man like father. I hate to think of the slow expected end which might come as a consequence.

This year has been a hard one for me. I have worked hard every day always looking forward for the day when I must leave all friends I have made here while in college and go home. I have not been home for nearly nine years, and sometimes I consider this is home--this country, because I have been so accustomed to the ways of this country, but yet my real home is in China, and it is there that I belong, and I am and have been hoping for the day when I will land on Chinese soil for the first time in ten years. I have been dreaming of the day when I start work with a young man’s vigor. While in college I have fought hard battles and won. I am happy because of the fact that I have won the battles which were hard. The battlew I fought were not entirely college work, but socially being the only oriental character in this part of the country. I have been sucessful, I think, ad now I am facing the rest of my college career with an empty heart. May be I should not feel that way, an- may be it is through my present stage of sentimentality that I am writing like this, but I can not help it.

Please tell me how father’s condition is if you have heard more recently, and pleaseanswer by a special delivery, and please return the enclosed letter.

Your very sincerely

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

I am now submitting my statement of the expenses of the second part of the current summer. I hope it is satisfactory. It is in a condensed form. I have the original form which you may have upon request.
Due to the raise in the tuition in Middlebury college of twenty-five dollars per semester, and also due to the fact that I plan to take an extra course which cost twenty-five dollars, I have to ask for 550.00 dollars instead of 500.00 as I did in the past three years. I could make that fifty dollar saving by eliminating some of the things which I plan to buy, but as Charlie is going home this year, I also wish to have some money to buy something for the folks at home. I hope you understand my point.

By the statement, you can see that I have now $5.75 left. That will last me for meals in Middlebury about five days. I do not have to pay for any room, because I am staying at the Fraternity House. So if you can send me the money ($550.00) by the middle of the coming week, I will be very thankful.

I passed all the courses I took this summer at Columbia with two Bs and one C. That gave me seven more credits toward my graduation All I need now is one semester’s work to get fifteen more credits. Then I will graduate in three and half years. The reason, I want to take the extra course is that I want some margin of safety.

I am now out for football, I am not on the training table, however, because the coach did not ask me to come back for training camp. I am just back here for football on my own.

I plan to make a trip to Andover to have a talk with you sometimes this fall concerning the place where I go for post graduate work. If I make the football squad, I will have to postpone that trip till the season is over.

Please let me have the money by the middle of the next week.

Sincerely yours</text>

Please pardon the stationary.

Inclose please find a detailed account of the 300.00 dollars which you sent me on March 16, 1927. Please look it over to see as whether or not it is satisfactory. I think you will find all the imformation [sic] of the various signs at the end of the third account sheet.

The money went faster than I expected. It was mainly on account of my joining the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. I did not know that D.U. wanted me, so I did not figure on that in my financial needs. Just the Fraternity alone cost me $64.25. I had to pay the College $65.00 for the balance of my bill, and 60 for a 4-piece suit. These three data amount up to $189.25. I will thankful if you will send me another check before the middle of the next week. The college is coming to an end, and there is alway [sic] the usual rush, so in order to avoid complication, I rather have the financial part settled. I wrote to the Mass. Water Supply Commission about three weeks ago, and as yet I have not heard from them. The chances are that I do not get a position. In case if I do get the position, I do not expect to receive more than 12 or 15 dollars a week. I will need around three hundred for the entire summer. So please send me the amount stated above, and I will be very thankful.

The college ends on the 15th of June, but that includes all the commence exercises, etc. I do not plan to remain for that., but I do plan to go to Andover at around the 10th or 15th of June. I shall give you the exact date later.

Please let me know Charlie's, Mary's, and Arthur’s plans for the summer. If I do not get a position to work this summer, I shall for the most part either remain in Andover for part of the vacation, or go to North Bridgton, where the Long Lake Lodges, for a while. I have not, however, made my plan for the entire summer yet that is if I do not get the position I applied for.

Please answer me at your earliest convenience.

Very truly yours</text>

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

Your letter of the 17th was received.

I am surprised to hear that Father intended that I should that I should go back at the same time that Mary goes back. Now I am enrolled in Yale, the Master’s degree is a two- year course, and the Doctor’s degree is a three year’s course, I have good intentions of finishing up with the Doctor’s degree--that is, however, is I get the Master's degree. I have never told you outright, perhaps, that I have no intention of doing further studying. I am going to Yale because I want to please father. I know that he will be disappointed otherwise. Well, that is settled.

I had an occassion [sic] to see Mary while I was down in New Haven. We came to the conclusion that it will be all right if we buy a car. She will put up one hundred and fifty dollars($150) and I will put up two hundred and fifty dollars ($250). Then we will be able to buy a second Ford. I am sure that I will not abuse the privilege. So if you will send me four hundred dollars, $150 of it will come out of Mary’s account and 250 dollars will come out of my account. We agreed on that ratio. I know of one car now in town, new last fall, which he said that he will be willing to sell for four hundred dollars. I hope that you will consent to this. If you will send me four hundred dollars by next week, I will be more than appreciative. I hope sincerely that you will see to it. It will mean a lot to me.

I expect a letter from Yale in a few days formally accept me into the graduate school.

Sincerely yours</text>
