<text>April 28, 1926.
Dr. Alfred E. Stearns
Phillips Academy Andover,
Massachusetts

My dear Dr. Stearns:
The enclosed letter from Mr. Sun was received two days ago. I thought that part about Mary's studies may be of interest to you. Please return the letter to me when you have finished with it.

I also enclose a copy of a cablegram I sent to Mr. Sun. I intended to send it to you first before cabling, but through a misunderstanding on the part of my Secretary it has been despatched already.

In looking over my file, I discovered that of the three letters I wrote you on or about April 5th about Mary, I had only one in my file. That is the one acknowledging the receipt of the telegraphic transfer of money. May I ask you to be good enough to cause copies to be made of the other two letters and send them to me at your convenience?

With best wishes, I am
Very sincerely yours,

April 26, 1926.
Please inform C. Y. Sun that his letter March 29th just received and Mary’s affairs are settled on lines of my letter April 5th to Dr. Stearns. She is apparently satisfied and happy.

Tientsin 29th March, 1926

My dear Alfred
I beg to own receipt of your kind letters sent to me directly and through Charlie Liang, together with copies of the correspondence between you & Mrs Sze and Dr. Stearns, Mrs Shapleigh, Arthur & Mary. It is indeed very kind of you and Mrs Sze to have taken such deep interest in Mary's affairs, for which I wish to thank you most heartily.

After careful consideration of the whole question regarding Mary's change of school, and taking advantage of the opinion expressed by Dr. Stearns in his letter of Feb, 22nd, from which I quote: " Arthur, however, is inclined to share my own feelings those of Miss Clemons, who has followed Mary pretty closely in her work, and those expressed, too, by Miss Bailey, Principal of Abbot Academy, that it is a serious question whether Mary has the proper qualification to make a College course for her practicable and wise." I have cabled Dr. Stearns, suggesting to him that Mary be sent back to Abbot to complete her work for her Diploma. I enclose a copy of this cable for your perusal.

Owing to the most exciting times that we are now passing through, quite unparalled in any previous experience in China, I confess I have not yet been calm enough in my mind to settle down and write my reply to Dr. Stearns, but I shall send you a copy as soon as I do write. The strain on one's nerve is terrible- the whole city is feeling that there is still something most disastrous going to happen. This is the BFNFFICIAL(?) result which the so called Anti-Red Army is forcing the people of Tientsin to enjoy. The so-called Red Army of General Feng’s troops are loved & respected by all those who have ever had any opportunity to see their manner toward people. I say so without prejudice. I do not know Feng or any of his subordinates, except those soldiers who have been loved by the people during their short stay in Tientsin. They are our TREASURE and will one day be the SAVIOURS of this country. All the country people say exactly what I have said. Excuse my talking of this here, but I thought you ought to know the facts.

As to your kind invitation for Mary to spend the Easter and Summer vacations with you, may I thank you and Mrs Sze for your kindness. I have written Dr. Stearns some time ago asking him to permit Mary to accept such invitation privided it did not interfere with her Summer schools work, to prepare her for college. As there is not now such need for this preparation, I hope Dr. Stearns will permit Mary to accept your kind invitation.

I have not been able to go down to Shanghai for the last nine months. I trust I can do so soon the railway communication is restored, if condition here permits.

With kind regards to Mrs Sze and thank you for all your kindness to Mary.
I beg remain
Yours sincerely

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

I have the pleasure to inform you that we had a very fine visit from Mary Sun and Quincey Sheh. Mary came to us Sunday March 26th and left here last Saturday April 2nd for Elmira by way of New York. She was to leave here Sunday evening for Elmira but she found the night train from here to Elmira runs only on week days. Furthermore this night train arrives in Elmira about 4.30 in the morning. As there was a teacher of Elmira College in Washington during the latter part of last week Mary telegraphed you for permission to go to New York with her on Saturday afternoon and then to go to Elmira on Monday also in her company. She received no reply from you so she thought you might be away from Andover and asked me for permission. In view of the night train arriving in Elmira so early in the morning, I agreed to let her travel with the teacher by way of New York.

Quincey came to us two days before Mary and left here half a day sooner than Mary.

With best wishes.

Sincerely yours,

My dear Doctor Stearns:

The enrollment for camp this year has, so far, exceeded any other year in our history. While there are a number of new and very delightful girls coming to us, yet of course the majority of campers this summer will be as always the girls who have been with us before.

Last year we had to turn away desirable people because we did not have room for them. Of course you know that we are glad to have Mary back this year if it is your desire to send her. We would dislike to have to refuse her registration later because of lack of room; therefore we are writing with the thought that you may wish to come to at least a tentative decision now, and we may have the pleasure of reserving a place for Mary.

Trusting we may hear from you at your earliest convenience, and with best wishes,

Very sincerely,

                <text>My dear Doctor Stearns:

We have had so much sunshine on the Cape this fall that the girls have enjoyed swimming, hiking, and horseback riding to the full. Recently they played the annual soccer game: "Dartmouth” vs. "Princeton", the former winning by one point! Mary will be interested to know that Bobby Gallagher was captain of the "Princeton" team.

Even at this early date, applications are coming in for Camp 1927. We are therefore sending this letter to all old campers whom we desire to invite back to Sea Pines. It is a pleasure to write you that Mary is included in this group.

As you probably anticipated last year, we are compelled to increase the tuition from $300.00 to $350.00. However for the old campers invited to return, we are giving the privilege of old rates, $300.00. It would be a great help to us in planning for the summer if we could receive your definite application not later than January 15th. We are therefore enclosing the registration blank.

If it is quite impossible for you to come to a decision at this time, we will, upon receipt of the enclosed card, extend the date of acceptance to March 1st.

We hope Mary is enjoying her school year and is well and happy. Since the real test of the value of camp is its carrying power throughout the year, we should like very much to receive the enclosed questionnaire, filled out at your convenience. If it would be of help to Mary, Miss Faith would be glad to write her at your suggestion.

Mary was such a splendid camper that we hope she will be with us next summer.

Mother, Miss Faith, Miss Addie, and all the other executives send affectionate greetings to Mary. Perhaps it is not too early to include beat holiday wishes to every member of your household.

Sincerely yours,
