My dear Mr. Stearns:

I have received your letter of March 2nd regarding Mary Sun.
I wish to tell you confidentially that I have received a letter from a friend of Mary’s enclosing a letter from Mary to her. In this letter Mary seems to pour out her whole heart to her friend. She seems to be very much depressed on account of her surroundings.

Under the circumstances, I think it may do her good to have a change. My wife and I would be only too glad to have her come down to Washington and spend her Spring vacation with us. We will try to cheer her up, and I am sure that the change will do her good and that she would undoubtedly return to her work after such a relaxation with new interest.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have just received your letter of December 12th.

I am sorry to say it was due entirely to my bad memory when I wrote to Mary Sun that I said two of her brothers. At the moment I thought there was only one brother at Andover besides Arthur in Boston. I shall be glad to have all three brothers come and also have Quincey Sheh if he does not mind a little crowding. One girl at Elmira College and two boys at Cook Academy for whom I act as guardian are coming to spend their Christmas with us. I have also invited Mr. M.T. Liang’s daughter and son to come and they have accepted my invitation. As to Mary Sun and her three brothers and Quincey Sheh, please tell them that they may come when they like and stay as long as they like. I want them to feel perfectly free to accept or decline. Mr. Sun was a very intimate friend of my wife’s father and besides, I know him myself personally very well. Our wish is to do everything we can for his children, so during any of the holidays if they wish to come to us just let us know. Should I find that my house is full with other guests I will let them know.

I hope I have made the situation quite clear to you. They can come any day after Christmas or they can come for Easter. We shall be glad to have them anytime and always.

With warm personal regards and with compliments of the Season,

Sincerely yours,</text>

I think it was in May when we wrote and asked Mary Sun whether she would come to spend a part of her Summer vacation with us in the country. She answered that she had planned to attend the Cornell Summer School in Ithaca and in the intervening period between the closing of the Elmira College and the opening of the Summer School she had accepted an invitation to go to Connecticutt [sic]. Therefore she is not able to come to visit us.

I was in Odessa, N.Y., on June 12th. I wanted to go and visit her at Elmira College but I was told by Miss Couch, a sophmore [sic] in that College, that the College had closed and all the students had gone. From Miss Couch I learnt that Mary was quite popular in the College and also successful in her studies.

With best wishes.

Dear Dr Stearns :

Your secretary’s letter of August 18th is received. If you have already sent to Tuan a letter by mail stating your agreement to take him into your school next September,

I think that there is nothing more that you can do for him to help him to get admitted to this country. You might write a letter to the young man addressed to the steamer at Seattle telling him that there is no necessity of your writing to the Immigration Authorities but in case he should have trouble of getting admitted to this country he should report to the Chinese Consul at Seattle and solicit his help.

Last Wednesday I saw Dr Lent of Elmira College. I mentioned to him about Mary Sun. He gave me the impression that he would take her into the college next month and would not be very exacting as to the Entrance requirements. Of course, Mary has to take the examinations and I think it better if she be not informed of my conversation with Dr Lent.

I have received now a cablegram from Admiral Tsai as follows: "Ask Dr Stearns to place children in same town if not in same school Tsai."

Sincerely yours,</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns:

This morning I received your letter of June 5 with reference to arrangements you made for Mary with Miss Bickford. Judging from your description, I think the Sea Pines is an ideal place for the summer and Mary is well advised to stay there for the whole summer session. After the close of the session and before the opening of the college at Elmira, she may come to us at Ithaca if she cares to.

This morning I received a letter from Mr.Sun dated "‘ay the 14th, in which he told me that he wrote to you on the 12th. I shall leave here next Wednesday for Ithaca to attend my class re-union and will be back here Monday or Tuesday. If there is any thing further I can be of assistance with the Elmira College authorities, please write or telegraph me care of Professor Charles Durham, Itheca, N.Y.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I have just received your letter of June 2nd, and I can well appreciate your anxiety in the matter. It is much more difficult to place a girl than a boy.

Since you know Miss Bickford, I think the arrangement is a good one. Of course the best thing to do is to get a member of the faculty at Elmira College to take Mary in for the summer and tutor her. But this I find impossible for the coming summer. I am also writing to Miss French to day. A copy of my letter to her is enclosed herewith.

We shall probably be in Ithaca after the 20th and remain there until about September 10th. There is some possibility of my meeting Mr. Robinson in Ithaca when I go up to Cornell for my Class Reunion next week. I am anxious to tell him that Mary’s affair is now happily arranged.

I am,
Yours sincerely,

June 3, 1926.
Miss Ernestine French
Executive Secretary
Elmira College
Elmira, New York

My dear Miss French:

Dr. Stearns writes me that he has now made arrangements with the Principal of Sea Pines School to take Mary in for the summer, so she will not come to Ithaca for the summer.

I thank you for the trouble you have gone to to make arrangements for her. Please also express my thanks to Miss

I am,
Yours sincerely,

Dear Dr. Stearns:

Your letter of May 24th is received.

I am very glad to know of the favorable reply you have received from President Lent of Elmira College.

I enclose herewith a letter which I have received from Miss French, Executive Secretary of Elmira College. Will you answer her direct so as to save time? I understand that Miss French will go abroad almost immediately after the Commencement Exercises at Elmira. Sage College, mentioned in her letter, is one of the Women’s Dormitories at Cornell. Kenniston House, I presume, is another Women's Dormitory. Mrs. Hespelt, mentioned in Miss French's letter is a graduate of Smith College, and the wife of a Professor in Spanish at Elmira College. He has accepted an appointment for the next year at New York University so they have to leave Elmira by July 1st.

Mrs. Hespelt was recommended to me by Miss French three years ago to look after the oldest Miss Tsao. About a month ago two of Miss Tsao's sisters arrived and are at present staying with Mrs. Hespelt. We have not succeeded in finding another member of the faculty at Elmira College to take the two Misses Tsao, so I hardly think it will be possible to find a suitable member of the faculty to take in Mary.

We have decided to spend our summer in Ithaca and have taken the Phi Delta Theta House. But we can not move into the House until about June 18th. If Mary cares to, she can live with us after the 20th, - that is, if she does not care to go and live at the Kermiston House.

I am leaving here on the 9th for Ithaca to attend my 25th Class Reunion. I hope to visit Elmira while I am up in the northern part of New York.

Please return Miss French’s letter to me.
Yours sincerely,</text>

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I did not fail to speak to Miss French, Secretary of Elmira College yesterday afternoon about Mary Sun.

She said that she would be glad to find a suitable tutor for Mary for the summer. But this, however, she could not well do until she hears from you as to the subjects in which special tutoring is required. Miss French expects to go abroad for the summer, sailing soon after the 20th of June.

Very sincerely yours,
Sao Ke Alfred Sze</text>
