Tenney Cambridge, Mass. My dear Dr. Tenney: I have received and read with deep interest your letter of the 7th inst. I am extremely sorry to hear of the failure of Seetoo’s father. The boy is one of the most promising of the boys we hae here. Only yesterday in faculty meeting I made careful inquiries about the work of both Tsai and Seetoo, in order to be able to help you in your decision as to their summer work. Our teachers spoke of Seetoo’s ability in the highest terms. In Mathematics especially he is reported to be unusually strong – one of the very best in the school. Naturally we don’t want to give him up. We will gladly extend to the boy for the coming year full scholarship aid. That means that his entire tuition will be remitted him. Rather than lose him, I will gladly make some arrangement whereby his room will be taken care of also, and I am further confident that if the case demands, I can secure outside assistance from some source that will enable him to meet the other expenses which he must face here. If it is a question merely of finances, he must not be allowed to stop at this point. Only last year our Trustees passed a special vote at my request authorizing me to advise the Chinese XX that xx scholarship would be thrown open to Chinese students on the same terms as those on which they are available for Americans andinviting recommendations from him of boys deserving such aid. Seetoo has clearly prevoed his right to assistance of this kind. I hope, therefore, the. Matter can be satisfactorily adjusted, and that if you have difficulty in securing xxx, you will advise me before allowing the boy to desire to give up his work, in order that I may have a chance to seek help from some of those whom I believe would be interested in the case. Dear Mr. Stearns Your kind letter of yesterday has reached me, and I thank you for your response to my request for a scholarship for Seetoo. I have replied to the letter from his uncle in China that I would do what I could for him here, but that before I solicited for help him in this country it seemed to me that his friends and relatives in China ought to do something. Until I hear from them I will be personally responsible for the boy’s expenses. If you can arrange to have the boy provided with a room next year, it will of course simplify matters very much for me, as I shall them only have to provide for his board and miscellaneous expenses. From what I am able to learn of his father's affairs it is not likely that his family can do very much, but I think they ought to do what they can before the hat is passed about here. I am very glad to have your favorable opinion of Seetoo's character and ability. It would be a very great pity if his education were to be broken off, I will see that that does not happen.
