They are boys whom I have known for four years and whose fathers I have known very well nearly as long. They come from very fine Chinese homes and I am very eager on account of my relationship with their fathers, especially as well as on account of my interest in the boys, to see that they have the happiest sort of introduction to our American school life. From two of the boys’ father I had a letter about their coming, which I shall be glad to show you. Last April I left Tientsin where I have been in Young Men’s Christian Association work for the last five years, and was not prepared for their coming so soon. My home used to be in Waterville, Maine, and you can imagine how proud I am to have them come to New England and to such a fine old school as Andover. I should be very glad indeed if you would write me as to what you have heard regarding their coming, and want to help to get them situated there with you. You can hardly understand, I believe, how much these personal relationships mean to the people in the Orient, especially in China. My relations with these boys' fathers have been particularly intimate and close. I feel I must do everything in my power to help them and I hope you will pardon anything that seems like an intrusion on my part. Mr. Sun wrote me that the boys were all to be placed in fine Christian homes. He and I had many talks about this matter of the boys’ life in this country and I hope that his idea has been carried out with regard to their living there at Andover. If I go with them from here I believe I shall be able to give some assistance in Andover to such homes as may be opened to them or in helping you to understand some adjustments that may be necessary. Sun, Tientsin, November 5, 1920 Relation A related resource My dear Mr. Sun: Now that the members of your family have been with us long enough to get acquainted a bit, at least, and I myself have had a chance to come to know them, I feel that you ought to have a word from me by way of report at least. We are still living in such absolute confusion at my house, owing to somewhat extensive repairs that are being made, that my only wonder is that the youngsters have not grown utterly discouraged and been ready to seek another home. They have borne the order, however, splendidly, and with the finest spirit, and I am hopeful now that within the next two or three weeks at the latest we shall be able to give them some idea what the interior of an American home is really like. If they have not already formed some strange opinions on this subject I should be very much surprised. Let me say at the outset that I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy even more keenly as the days go on, the presence of those bright and responsive children in my home. In using the word children I do not mean to include Arthur, who is a man in more than years, and on whom I feel I can lean and with whom I can consult with confidence and immense profit. I don't know when I have met a boy who has impressed me so favorably as has Arthur as a boy of character, stability and poise. The youngest members of the family are also entitled to their full share of commendation. Their faults, if they have any, are only those of youth so far as I can judge. Charles inspires affection. Thomas, though a bit impulsive and occasionally disposed to sulk, is at heart sound and increasingly responsive. Mary has won the affection of us all and fits beautifully into the home life, where no one could be more cheery, responsive and helpful than is she. At present the boys are taking their at the house. This is because of the complications involved in the servant question, which is always a very difficult question in this country. I am still hoping, however, that a bit later I may be able to keep all three of the children with me for all the meals. From all I can gather the three children are doing well in their studies at the public school. The first reports of the term have not yet come in but I have reason to believe that they will prove in every way satisfactory when they come. All three seem keenly interested in their studies, though they are a bit digressed to make too free use, in their private conversations, of their mother tongue, for the best and quickest comprehension of the English language. In due season I count on them to appreciate for themselves the desirability of strengthening their English by a more constant use of it, without in any way lessening their knowledge of and love for their native tongue. Please understand that this is a brief report only, and a little later I hope to write you more fully, though I have no doubt that the children themselves will keep you informed from time to time of their work, life and progress. If there is anything in these reports to suggest that I can, by a clearer appreciation of their needs and problems, be of further and greater help to them I shall count on you to advise me with the utmost frankness, for it is my earnest desire to co-operate in every possible way in order that the American experience and education of your boys and girls may be best advanced, and that the great sacrifice which you and they are making to this end may bear fullest and richest fruit. Quincy Sheh arrived at about the same time and has apparently found little difficulty in adjusting himself the new conditions, and already looks like a full fledged Phillipian. He has been at the house several times and his old friends here were most glad to welcome him. He seems like a very attractive fellow. Just now the family circle is pretty well keyed up over the coming Christmas. We are planning a true, with all the fixings. I mean to make the event one which none of our eastern friends will be likely to forget. They are entering into it with the finest spirit and enthusiasm, which will mean much to the enjoyment of the affair by us all. I find that most of the other Chinese boys of the school are likely to be in town over the holidays and I have asked them to join us at the tree. What a suffering world this is these days, with cries for help rising from all sides; and the worst of it all is that a vast portion of this suffering is due indirectly, if not directly, to the incompetency, greed and selfishness of man himself, and his utter disregard of the Golden Rule. I appreciate deeply all the arrangements that you have made for all the children and especially so the admission of the three youngsters into your own home, —the very thing I cared most, as, their being admitted into a home like yours ensures good discipline which is an important part of their education. I am convinced that failures in life are always due to lack of religious home training during the so-called impressionable age of a youth. I feel greatly pleased over the kind remarks that you have made about Arthur, but I am of the opinion that he still needs further Christian home training to ensure his characters being perfectly adjusted. I wonder if it is possible or not too much for me to ask you to try to put him into a real, good Christian home for at least a certain length of time so as to enable him to get acquainted with the American home ideals. However, I leave the question to your best judgement, should you consider it otherwise. I thank you for your kind invitation for advice, I am sorry I have nothing to suggest any more than to say that I hope our children will be so trained and so educated as those best American Citizens that you turned out in the States. Besides, I don’t think one could give any advice after a reading of the introduction on page 16 of the report of Phillips Academy for 1919-1920 sent to me by Arthur. He also has been good enough to send me "The Phillips Bulletin” (Oct. 1920 issue). I read carefully and with interest your article entitled "Andover and China". Both writings represented to me a perfect knowledge of the Chinese youth and their mission to Phillips. A perusal of them leaves no room for any suggestion. Generally speaking, a Chinese youth should be taught especially the meaning as well as practice of the following ideals: Punctuality Frugality Discipline Self-sacrifice for a good cause Self-respect, self-denial, self-control, self-defence Respect for righteousness Exactness. As you are such a good, sympathic [sic] friend our younger generation, I venture to tell you the insufficiency in these virtures [sic] of our people. These faults have caused my nation being placed under an autocracy for the last centuries. We are now trying to get rid of it, and therefore it is absolutely essential to deroot these basis faults of the nation from our younger generation most vigoriously [sic]. I now wish to point out some of the short-comings of my children; first as regard to Arthur, I am afraid he needs to be exact in his habits; Charles is a very smart boy but his obstinate temperment [sic] requires treatment by explanations and persistant [sic] checking; Thomas is not so smart as the rest of the children but is a good hearted kid, his impulsiveness and sulkiness can easily be remedied by the application of the same method as I suggested for Charles. Mary is a very ambitious girl like her brothers, I think she will soon be more familiar with your family. She tells me she desires to learn violin besides other musical instruments. As to-morrow is the date of your own Chinese New Year, you certainly timed your missive well. Many thanks for both the card and the letter, and most of all for the friendly spirit back of then. We are planning to give the Chinese boys here something in the way of entertainment, and that will help them to remember the day, though apparently their memories need no jogging in that respect. I want them to feel, however, that though they are in a far away land, it is possible to do something that will make the day a bit different from the ordinary days of the American school year. The four members of the Sun family who are under my roof are an increasing delight and source of satisfaction to us all. They have come to fit into the family in a way that would make us feel very much lost without them. Arthur of course rooms only at the house and is primarily engaged in his school affairs, but he is responsive, always a gentleman, and in every way a desirable boy to have in the house. The three younger children are all that could be asked for. They are interested and earnest in their studies, responsive, and friendly to a unique degree. They are ready to fit in in every way and every time developments or an occasional emergency may demand, and so good natured and willing about it all that they have won the good will and affection of us all to an increasing degree. I really don’t know just how I would get along without them. Quincey Sheh, the last comer, is quiet and a bit shy as yet, but in every way an acceptable addition to the home circle. Frankly though, I do not feel that it is altogether wise to have so many of these Chinese boys under the same roof, merely because they aren't so ready to pick up their English. It is mighty easy for them to talk Chinese when they are together, and one can hardly blame them, but at the same time it does not improve their knowledge of English with the consequent lightening of pressure in their studies which the gain in English would insure. The present arrangement was the best I could work out for the boys at this time, but I will try to figure out something better before the next school year begins. I mean to write Mr. Sun in a few days, enclosing financial statements for all four of his children up to the beginning of the present term. This is the one item which troubles so, for I have found it very difficult to determine just what the children at the house should be charged. I do not wish to make anything out of the transaction, but at the same time it is of course necessary for me to cover the actual outlay and that is hard to determine. Rooms in private houses regularly bring $7 a week now, and board in the best private boarding houses is $12 per week. These two items alone would amount to $19 per week, therefore, on the basis of similar charges made to our boys in shcool [sic]. It is not possible for one in my position to give board at the same outlay on my par that would be true of a boarding house keeper who caters to a large number of boys, and by buying in wholesale lots can secure lower prices. On the other hand, I think I may fairly say that the board at my own table is as good as that supplied in the houses in question, for it is of course necessary for me to keep up a standard which is probably higher than I should think of indulging in were not the necessity constantly forced on me of entertaining guests of the school. Farther, the advent of these young friends at my house brought me immediately face to face with a demand from the kitchen for an increase in wages. I do not think any one in China can conceive of what the servant problem here is like. My two maids alone at the present time get as much money per week as I was accustomed to pay my highest priced cook a month only two or three years back. Of course in addition to these two main items the wear and tear item is a very considerable one, but a very difficult one to estimate. Miss Clemons devotes most of her time and thought to the household and seldom leaves it, and it seem to me that if a way could be worked out, it would be only fair to include in the charge an item, though I know she would insist that I would be a comparatively small item, to cover the extra time and labor which she has so generously given to the work. I do not mean to imply that she does not enjoy it thoroughly, but I happen to know that she has given up many out of town and other trips simply because she did not feel that she could safely dispense with the responsibility even for a limited time. I am going to send you a copy of the letter which I write to Mr. Sun, and I am going to ask you to be absolutely frank with me in criticizing any statements or conclusions made therein. I would give anything if I could sit down and talk out the matter face to face with you and Mr. Sun, especially when conditions in the two countries are absolutely different, as they are at the present time. I do hope that your country is going to weather its present conditions and that by the time the winter is over at least will face a greatly improved economic condition and a freedom from the internal strife and turmoil that have been so injurious to China and so beneficial to her enemies. America is doing something for the relief of your suffering people. Would that she would do more. Believe me with warmest personal regards and kind remembrances to any of my good friends over there whom you may happen to meet.
