Phillips Academy,
Andover, Mass.

My dear Dr. Stearns:

Thank you for your letter of the 25th and the blank which you have signed. I deeply appreciate, as all the Chinese boys who have been through Andover, do, your guardianship and advices which you have given me since I came to this country. I fully understand your position as my unofficial guardian, and therefore you feel at times not at liberty to act officially. As you already know, this authority was transferred to you from Mr. Chen, my former guardian, upon his return to China two years ago, the time at which I could hardly find a guardian other than you, who so kindly accepted the responsibility. I regret the fact that the full authority of a guardian has never been delegated to you by my parents on account of the source from which my allowances come. However, I feel strongly the necessity of giving to you the authority in full so that I may not have the slight hesitation in seeking your advice, and you may act freely and officially, or to another man, as my parents may see adivisable, who should have full charge of my affairs during my stay in this country. On my return home this summer I shall refer this matter to my parents in order that my relation to you may be clearly defined.

I am very much appreciated by your kindness of widhing to assist me in your power. I shall always try my utmost in my work to justify my position.

P.S. I have begun to pack up my things. I should like to have the messages which you wish me bring to your friends in China if you have them ready.

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

Helen Tsai tells me that she is expecting to spend the summer with Mrs. Nye in Weymouth. I wondered what you would think about making a plan for her to remain at Saint Mary’s after our Commencement, June 11th, and do some additional work in English. We will have several girls remaining for the College Board examinations and also others for additional work, so that Helen would not lack companionship. At that time we could plan several trips in and around New York which would be of interest and advantage. If you approve of the plan I shall be glad to submit to you some points of interest that have come to my mind and possibly you might add others. I have not spoken to Helen of the plan.

We have all become very much attached to Helen because of her sweet, happy nature and her efforts for her own improvement.

I am enclosing a bill which covers the cost for Helen’s uniforms for the year. The school has already paid this bill at McCreery’s.

Very sincerely,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am in receipt of your letter of December 5th in regard to Helen’s Christmas holidays. I shall be very glad to have her spend the time here if she could be happy in so doing. We will probably have four other children, so that she would not be alone. Whenever any children spend their vacations here we make a special point of planning something for their interest and amusement.

It will be possible to send Helen to New York for several days to visit the museums and other places of interest. I think that she would enjoy doing this.

If this plan meets with your approval I shall be only too glad to do anything that I can for Helen for she has been a very acceptable member of our household. She has been very conscientious in her work and in carrying out every school regulation. We have all enjoyed having her here.

If it seems best to you for her to spend a part of her holiday in South Weymouth I think it could be so arranged that she could have company to Boston. If she went the day school closes she would have the companionship of several other pupils on their way to different points in New England. Soon after Christmas I shall probably go to Boston for a week, possibly longer. I think a trip to Boston could be planned quite satisfactorily for Helen.

I am enclosing Helen's report, which should have gone to you sooner. I think, on the whole, that it is a very good one, considering her handicap in the point of English. Her vocabulary is not large and in both History and English she finds difficulty oftentimes in meeting the requirements. One of the teachers of English has taken Helen by herself and I am sure has been a great assistance in the general understanding of the work in English.

I allowed Helen to go with a party of girls to hear Harold Bauer, which proved a most interesting afternoon for her.

I shall welcome any suggestions that you have in connection with her work or her care.

I am enclosing the vacation notice which is sent out to the parents and guardians.

Very sincerely,

Sister Superior, C.S.M.

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am enclosing a copy of the schedule which has been arranged for Helen Tsai. She seems to have entered upon the work with good spirit and is most faithful and conscientious and has made herself an acceptable pupil in all her classes. She is hampered in some instances by a limited English vocabulary but she is quite ready to make her contribution to the class recitations.

In speaking of music Helen said that she had studied it for two years and felt that she had made no progress and wished to omit it.

Her uniforms were ordered and as soon as the bill is received I will forward it to you with itemized account.

You will notice from the slip enclosed that the girls are allowed a certain amount of spending money. That allowed for the girls of Helen’s class is six dollars a month. Will you kindly let me know your wish in this respect. If you wish her to have the regular amount I can either advance it to her and put it on the bill of you may send it as seems best. The money is deposited in the School Bank and each pupil draws what she needs by cheque.

It was a great help to us in having Helen come a week before school began. She seems to have fitted into the school life very well indeed and quite naturally to have taken her place in all the school activities.

I shall be glad for suggestions on any point in our care of her.

Very sincerely,
