Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of the 18th inst. I am very much interested in your Hungarian friend. We have a good many nationalities presented here already. One of the most interesting and promising boys we have is a young Italian who under circumstances very similar to those existing in the present instance was sent here by Dr Huntington of New York. This boy, too, is preparing for the ministry, and we believe that he will make good.

I mention these cases simply that you may understand that while we are accustomed to hold pretty rigidly to our regular courses, we are at the same time willing to make necessary allowances and exceptions for foreigners. Consequently I think we can do as much for your friend. From the catalogue which I am sending you under separate cover you will be able to see what our general courses are. As most of our boys go to Yale, these courses are arranged to meet in full the Yale requirements. I see no reason why such a course cannot be satisfactorily arranged
I do not understand from your letter whether it is your wish to have the boy enter here this year, or whether you wish him to wait until the opening of the next school year. If you will advise me on this point I shall be glad to offer were satisfactory suggestions You will be able to tell from the catalogue the amount of ground covered by our classes term by term as well as during the entire year. May I also suggest that you have your friend fill out carefully and return to me the application blank which will be found in the back of the catalogue The information called for on this blank will make it possible for me to handle the case more intelligently. Please feel free also to advise me if you desire further or more detailed information.

Very truly yours,
Principal.</text>

Prin. Alfred E. Stearns,
Andover, Mass.

My dear Mr. Stearns;

I have in hand a very promising young man, whose education and preparation for the ministry, I am called upon to direct.

His case is an interesting one. He is a Hungarian and the son of a saloon-keeper. He is now twenty three years of age, and occupies a responsible position as private secretary to one of the directors of The Yale and Towne Lock Co., of Stamford. He is an experienced stenographer.

His education has pursued a somewhat erratic course. He left school before reaching High School. He has however, since that time, qualified himself in large measure by his own study. He attended a Business School for a while. He also put in a hard year at the preparatory school at Heidelberg University in Ohio.

He took one full year of Latin and one half a year of Greek. In English and history I judge he stands fairly well. The main point on which he would fall short is mathematics.

In addition to his work at the preparatory school he has also been tutored somewhat. His plan is to prepare to enter Yale. He wishes ultimately to enter the ministry in order to do work among the Hungarian people. He is a good speaker and a man of strong personality.

The matter I now have in hand is to get him prepared to enter Yale. He would need to pursue a somewhat irregular course. It seems to me he ought to be able to get ready for Yale in about two years, if he could do his work in special ways.

I wish that he might go to Andover Academy, but I do not know to what extent you can care for such special students. Perhaps it may be necessary for him to go to some other school, like Northfield, for his first year, and then take a second year at Andover.

He has resigned his business position and is ready to begin the first of January. He has about three hundred dollars in cash.

I think that his is a case well worthy of attention.

May I submit the matter to you and receive your early reply as to what you could do for him and also an estimate of the expense per year. If so I shall be very grateful.

Sincerely yours,

I thank you for your letter.

As this matter needs to be settled at once in order that Mr. Ungvary, in case of entering Andover, may begin with the January term, I am advising him to go to Andover at once to confer with you.

He is however at work until January 1st., and Christmas Day would be the only opportunity to do so.

I wonder if you could give him a little time next Tuesday.

If so, could leave here Tuesday at 9-10 in the morning getting to Boston at two o’clock. I presume he would get out to Andover about four o’clock.

If you could see him on Tuesday will you be so kind as to telegraph me at once.

If it is impossible for you to see him on Tuesday, will you please write me and make an appointment for some other day next week.

He will come at some other time if necessary but he prefers not to lose a day at his work.

The enclosed blank is the one he has filled out. There are
however so many matters to be considered that I hardly see how we can do it by correspondence. Moreover as you will see,he has very little time to decide as to where he may enter in January

Sincerely yours,

                <text>Mr. John J. Ungvary
Mount Herman, Mass.

My dear Mr.Ungvary:

I have just received your letter of the 20th inst. I am certainly glad that you are located in so good a school as Mount Herman. Your work there will, I know, be of the greatest value, while the influence of the school are, as everybody recognizes, of the best. I do not wish ever to encourage a boy to leave a good school where he is making satisfactory progress. At the same time if you still feel at the end of the year that you wish to enter Andover, we shall be glad to have you and shall merely require a satisfactory letter form Mount Herman. I assume that you will have a difficulty in securing such a letter. Your assignment to classes here would be based in on entrance examinations and the record of your previous work. There is no reason why you should not be eligible for a scholarship here unless something should occur between now and the opening of our next school year to debar you. Such a contingency is of course act likely to occur, for I know you are in school with a serious purpose I have no doubt, too, that we shall be able to put you in touch with outside work which will prove remunerative to you.

I am interested also to hear of your young Chinese friend. We have seven Chinese boys in the school at this time and they are remarkably bright set of fellows. The present Chinese Minister to this country, also an XX Andover man. If your friend wishes to enter here next year, I shall be very glad to consider his application for school and aid and I XX applying as early as this he can count on outside work to help defray his expenses. I enclose a scholarship application, which I would be glad to have him fill out carefully and return to me if he is at all likely to desire to enter here next fall. Should he decide not to do so, the fact that he has filled out and sent in this blank will not affect the situation one way on the other.

Wishing you every success and happiness in your work at Mount Herman, believe me,

Sincerely yours.
