Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of July 24th.

In consequence of your letter we will permit Mr. Yung to enter the Institute without examination in all subjects except English. If he passes our course in English, which is given in the first term of the Sophomore year, we will pass off his condition in English. Since he is a foreigner we will be satisfied if he knows a considerable amount of English at the end of our course in that subject.

Will you be kind enough to communicate this information to Mr. Yung.
Thanking you for the trouble you have taken in this connection I am, (Signed)

Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of Aug. 30th regarding Mr. Sen Yan Yung.

I am very much indebted to you for this letter. I wrote Professor Bancroft July 26th stating that we would admit Mr. Yung to the Freshman class without examination in all subjects except English. If he passes our course in English in the Sophomore year we will consider him passed in our entrance English. We have to grant foreigners this privilege at times.

Gentlemen:

I have received from Professor E. Swavely, Principal of the Army & Navy Preparatory School at Washington, D.C. a certificate covering the work of Mr. T.Kai Liang at that school. From the certificate we can accept, in place of entrance examinations, the following required subjects: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra; Plane and Solid Geometry; Chemistry; United States History; French. We can also accept the following elective subjects: German; Advanced Algebra; Trigonomety. The required Algebra and Geometry count 3 units, the Chemistry 1 unit, the History 1 unit, and the French 2 units. This leaves 3 required units in English for the work of the current year. The accepted elective subjects amount to 3 units, made up of German 2, Advanced Algebra ½, and Trigonometry ½. This leaves one elective unit to be made up by work during the current year. This may be made in Physics or any other science, or in history or language.

In other words, Mr. Liang lacks four units, having covered ten. Of these four units, three are required and one is elective.

Very truly yours.

Dear Sir:-

We have six 8 x 10” photographs, showing exterior and interior views of the Russell Sage Laboratory of this institution, in one mat with a plain dark frame. The outside measurement is 40” x 25". These pictures correspond to the views on pages 6, 8, 10, 30, 62 and 80 of the bulletin describing the Sage building. I send you a copy of this bulletin.

The picture is handsome and I believe instructive. If you can find a good place for it on the walls of your school, we shall be glad to send one to you by express prepaid.

Kindly answer on the enclosed postal.

Very truly yours, (Enc.)

Dear Sir:-

I have your letter of the 18th inst. relating to the entrance of Mr. Sen Yan Yung to this institution, together with three enclosures which I will return after you have answered the following inquiries.

We are more particularly interested in the young man’s Algebra through Quadratic Equations and his Geometry. Will you kindly write me telling me whether he
took Algebra through Quadratic Equations in your school and whether he did satisfactory work in this, and also how much Geometry he took. I believe from his marks that he did satisfactory work in both these subjects at your school but cannot definitely tell how much work he took.

I would be willing to admit him on probation in English since he is a foreigner. We give a rather stiff course in English here and should he pass that we could cross off his conditions in elementary English.

Awaiting your reply, I am,
