Dear Sir:-

I have your favor of the 21st with reference to admission to this school at this time. I do not think it wise to enter in the middle of the year. Your preparation seems satisfactory, if you are able to use the English language readily. I would suggest that you communicate with Dr. Charles D. Tenney, 86 Buckingham Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, as to the best course to pursue for the remainder of this year. He has charge of some of the Government students and other Chinese boys. You will see by the catalogue which I am sending you under separate cover that we have several Chinese boys at present in the school, and the quality of their work leads us to welcome other Chinese boys here. If I can lend render further assistance to you I shall be glad to do so.

Sincerely yours,

Mr. Ying Chinn Lo,

Dear Sir:-

On my return to Andover after an absence of a few days I find your letter of the 21st inst., which has been acknowledge in my absence by our Registrar, Mr. Bancroft. It has occurred to me that a small home school not far from here, with which a brother of mine is associated, and which is designed primarily to fit boys to meet our entrance requirements, might offer you just the kind of work you most need to enable you to enter the Academy next fall. While the school is designed primarily for young boys, this is its first year, and the few boys who are there vary in age from fifteen to eighteen years. The nature of the work is largely personal, in fact almost equivalent to private tutoring. At the same time, the home life which is provided would offer you an exceptionally good opportunity to perfect your English. The terms are very reasonable. The location makes it possible for you to visit Andover from time to time on the occasion of affairs of interest, while, as I have before said, the work is based almost wholly on the scholarship requirements of Phillips Academy. I know of no other place where you would be more likely to secure the special work and attention needed to make your later work here most successful. I shall be glad to advise you further in regard to this school, should you so desire. If the plan meets with your approval, the earlier you can get started, the better.

As Mr. Bancroft has written you, we have a number of Chinese students in the school, seven in all. Some of these are Government students, and others are private students. The majority have come here through the influence of the present Chinese Minister to this country, Sir Chentung Liang Cheng, who was himself at one time a student in the school, and who has always been a loyal friend. He is at present the President of our Washington Alumni Association, and only last week I had the pleasure of dining with him in Washington, He plans to send his own boys to us in the near future.

Kindly advise me if I can be of any further assistance in providing for your work, and believe me,

Very truly yours,</text>

Miss Alice M. Duren,
Oakland, Cal.

My dear Miss Duren:-

I am very grateful to you for your full and explicit letter of the 16th inst., which I have just received. My experience with the Chinese during the past few years leads me to feel that we shall be able to make wholly satisfactory arrangements for your friend, Mr. Lo. These boys are most attractive fellows, and it is a great pleasure to work with them. We find them among our very best students, always courteous, deferential, and thoroughly gentlemanly. The work of these boys has invariably been based on the entrance requirements of the best scientific schools of the East. I infer that this would be the course which Mr. Lo would desire to follow.

My brother happened to be in Andover about a week ago, and I talked over with him the possibility of looking after the Chinese boys from California, for I understand from Mr. Lo’s letter that a friend of his was to accompany him. My brother’s school closes the latter part of June, but as he plans to be there during the summer, he tells me that he would be willing to keep the boys there and work with them until the fall. Ordinarily he has been connected with a summer camp where individual work of this kind is done. As my brother is thoroughly familiar with our requirements here, I think he will be able to cover the ground in a satisfactory way. His school is located at Mount Vernon, New Hampshire, a short distance from Nashua. I will ask him [illegible] to correspond with you about the cost, since I do not know just what his charges would be for the entire summer work. The ordinary charges of the school are reasonable, below, in fact, those charged by most schools of this kind. I will ask my brother to send you full particulars.

I understand that Mr. Lo will communicate with me from Washington, and I shall be glad to write him there. The Chinese Minister is thoroughly familiar with the conditions here, and will no doubt be able to give the young man such advice as he needs. I hope that you, too, will feel perfectly free to write me from time to time, offering such suggestions as may occur to you whereby Mr. Lo’s work may be made as satisfactory and beneficial as possible.

Very truly yours,

                <text>March 16, 1907.

Mr. A. E. Stearns,
Principal Phillips Academy,
Andover, Massachusetts

Dear Sir,

In behalf of Mr. Ying Chiun-Lo, I acknowledge your favor of the 4tn instant to him.
Mr. Lo arrived from Canton, China, January 21. I was recommended to him from the San Francisco Chinese Consulate as a teacher of English. He has been studying English with me since February 1. I am, otherwise, a teacher in the Public Schools of the Department of this city.

It has devolved upon me, additionally, Mr. Lo being wholly a stranger to this Coast, to obtain information for him regarding preparatory schools, both here and in the East. Mr. Lo has been so undecided as to his future college course, and, in fact, upon nearly every point connected with his present and future movements, it has been most difficult to advise him.

The one point upon which he has been certain from the first is that his UNIVERSITY course will eventually be obtained at some Eastern College. Additionally, he now has in mind that he will make this the Electrical Engineering course. These facts have led me to strongly advise an Eastern preparatory school of unquestionable standing. Incidentally, I might say, I am a N.E. woman by birth and by education, brought up near Boston, in Woburn and Lexington, and just returned the latter part of January from there, from a twenty months’ leave of absence, so naturally, Eastern institutions are well known to me. I had nearly brought Mr. Lo to deciding upon your Academy when your letter XX me. Your letter has now clinched the matter, I think, and Mr. Lo will probably leave for the East upon reply to this and upon advices from the Chinese Legation at Washington.

Mr. Lo greatly needs the individualized work of a home school such as you offer in that with which your brother is connected. This was a was point upon which was particularly anxious,— that Mr. Lo should be so placed upon arrival in the East that he should lose no time; and further , that he might, between now and the next Sept., so additionally prepare himself as to enter a more advanced class than the beginning class of the Academy. This last point is to the end that he may so shorten and lessen the cost of his preparatory course. In all that I say, I am voicing Mr. Lo’s wishes, as I have advised with him. I am satisfied that he can make an advanced class by next Sept, by following your suggestion of the Home School. regarding this home school, will you please tell me where it is located; also, can you give the cost, approximately, per month, of expense [sic] of the same , covering board and room, tuition etc. Also, will this school be in session during the Summer months. Mr. Lo desires to continue his studies during them.

Mr. Lo' s education has been wholly in the Canton Schools,— the past eight months under a most excellent teacher, a Mr. Samuel S.Young, a native Chinese of San Francisco, graduated from State University and from a post-graduate course at Columbia. Mr. Lo has completed Plane Geometry, Simple Equations in Algebra, a little of English History, Physics, and Chemistry. All this work has been done in his native Chinese; additionally, he has studied English including English Grammar. I will say concerning his English that I find it, both written and spoken averaging better than that of other Chinese whom I have taught.

Like all the Chinese, I think you will find Mr. Lo eager and glad to learn, a thoroughly satisfactory student in every way. He is 13 years of age, rather immature, and quite timid, -this last naturally arising from his lack of English and the strangeness of his surroundings. I am quite sure that with a little personal attention and encouragement on your part and from those with whom he will be connected during the next few months, Mr. Lo will so develop as to enter upon his student work in your Academy at the beginning of the fall term most satisfactorily prepared for advanced work, and a promising student. To this end, Mr. Lo will need advice from you as to the work he should do in this home school, and later, as to the Academy course that will properly prepare him for the University course he has elected.

There is some connection, — no relation, I believe,—between the present Chinese Minister at Washington, and Mr. Lo's family, and Mr. Lo purposes visiting Sir Chentung Liang Cheng, enroute to Andover.

I shall advise Mr. Lo to communicate with you from Washington. I wonder if it would be possible for him to be met in Boston by some one; perhaps better, you will instruct him upon hearing from him from Washington.

I have made this letter rather lengthly to embody the necessary points of Mr. Lo’s wishes; and explicit, hoping that it may facilitate matters with regard to him. I am much interested in Mr. Lo personally and as a student and desire to help him all possible.

Thanking you for your kind and explicit letter to Mr. Lo, which, likewise, has been most helpful to me, in adjusting this matter, I remain,

Your most sincerely,</text>

                <text>Miss Alice M. Duren
Oakland, Cal.

My dear Miss Duren:

I thank you for your letter of the 10th inst. relating to Mr. Lo. I am taking the liberty of forwarding this letter to my brother at Mt.Vernon, in order that he may fully appreciate the boy’s situation and peculiar needs. I am going to suggest to my brother that he brings the boy down here from time to time during the spring term, in order that he may make the acquaintance of the seven Chinese boys now in the school. I think such a course would help him to overcome his homesickness and loneliness.

So far as my experience goes, there is no other school outside of Andover, with the possible exception of Phillips Exeter at Exeter, New Hampshire, which offers a boy of limited means so good an opportunity to secure an education at a minimum cost. Our Trustees last year passed a special vote throwing open our scholarship funds to Chinese students on the same basis that they are open to boys of our own nationality. There is no reason, therefore, why a Chinese boyy should not be able, as so many other boys have been, to make him XX through the school at a very slight expense. I am sorry that Mr. Lo’s friend, Mr.Li, did not decide to combine forces. Of the Chinese boys now in the school two bear the name of Li, one coming from Ningpo and the other Tientsin. Both are exceedingly bright and reliable fellows.

Trusting that you will feel free to write me at any time making such suggestions as may seem to be desirable to further Mr. Lo’s best interests, believe me

Very sincerely yours,
Alfred E. Stearns</text>
