Stearns, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. Dear Sir: Your note of April 30th at hand in reference to Mr. Fayuen, the Chinese student. In explanation I would state that I did a submucous resection of his septum and removed a piece of the vomer bone which badly obstructed his nasal respiration. This was absolutely necessary to him because of the discomfort it caused him. The usual price of this operation varies from one hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars but, as it is customary with members of our profession to reduce the charge for students, I gave him this minimum price. This kind of work is necessarily expensive because it is expensive to me. I also advised Mr. Fayuen to have his teeth attended to immediately. He has probably lost a few of his teeth because of the condition of his nose and it would be a pity for him to lose the rest of them when care given to them now would result greatly to his advantage.
