Mr. Vung Lung Wong,

My dear Wong:

I have been rather disturbed to learn recently that a bill at Mr. Holt’s, a statement of which I enclose herewith- is still standing against you. The bookkeeper tells me that they have not been able to secure a payment of this account,

I feel confident that you must have overlooked this and that you did not intentionally allow it to remain unpaid. Our Chinese boys have uniformly been so prompt and businesslike in meeting, their financial obligations that I am exceedingly reluctant to feel that carelessness of individuals may in a measure mar this generally good record. Won't you please see that this account is settled, for your own sake as well as for the sake of the other Chinese boys who have been here ?

I Shall be interested to hear how the new life and work appeal to
you, I trust that all goes well, and that you are making steady and substantial progress in all of your work.

With best wishes for the year, believe so, as always.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Wong:

Accept my thanks for your prompt and satisfactory reply to my recent letter of inquiry. I have this morning notified Holt and Company that you had promised to settle the account soon, and that I felt sure that they could rely on you to keep your word. I certainly have no desire to embarrass you in the matter, but I am jealous of the good name of our Chinese boys, and I know from experience that nothing tends sooner to injure one's good name or to arouse suspicion than unpaid bills.

With every good wish to you in your new work, and with kind personal regards, believe me, as always

Very sincerely yours.

Mr Wong Vung Lung

My dear Wong:

Your letter reached me this morning. I appreciate your situation and the difficulties attending the settlement of your bills. I have found that several of our Chinese boys have experienced the same trouble, owing to the poor exchange in China just now Holt and Company will be reasonable. I am sure, in view of the patience which they have already shown I hope, however, that it may be possible for you to make a settlement before long.
My latest reports from Jimmie Lee indicate that he is hoping to answer Exeter in the near future, I imagine he found it pretty lonely up in Vermont.

I shall he interested to hear how your work at Purdue is progressing and I shall be disappointed if the year does not prove in every way a most happy and satisfactory one to you – You boys have a wonderful opportunity to do a great work in the world when you return to China, and in order that that opportunity may be fully accepted, it is imperative that you should make the best use of every hour and of every chance offered you here in America. The new and greater China of the future will look to you for leadership, and she must not look in vain. It is because I feel this so strongly that I feel more than the usual interest in the Chinese boys that come to us. Frankly, I was a good deal disappointed in your record at Andover, but I realise that the poor results were not altogether your fault. and I most earnestly hope that the weak spots been strengthened and the dangerous tendencies eliminated.

With the best of wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and a most successful and influential future. Believe me.

Very sincerely yours.

Dear Dr. Stearns:

I owe you an apology for not having written you after telephoning you last Saturday. The fact is that I have had so much on my mind since my arrival last Friday that the omission remained quite unnoticed until the present time.

Did I not think that the matter which we wished to bring to your attention would prove of interest to you, I would not trouble you to come in. It is with reference to some writing, which we think possibly you may be in position to do for us and which would be mutually profitable. It is not a matter that can be gone into at any length in a letter, and therefore I will defer its discussion, hoping to have the pleasure of meeting you at our Office at an early date.

I note with pleasure the important gathering of Chinese students at Andover, as you know of my interest in the Chinese and the Chinese question.

I may say I am in regular correspondence with members of the King family in China and anticipate a visit to that country in the not distant future.

Thanking you in advance for the favor of a call, I remain with kind regards,

Very truly yours,

Your very kind letter of the 6th inst. has been received and vary deeply appreciated. I assure you after reading the letter I feel an even keener regret at the necessity of giving up the undertaking. I assure you, however, that J would be glad to feel that I could consistantly pursue any other course, but this seems impossible. Any service which I might in other ways be able to render at any time will be gladly contributed, and I certainly hope that you will find just the right man for the special work in hand.

With best wishes for the New Year, believe me.
