I am sorry that the arrangements for living and tutoring which we suggested to Miss French were not so definite as she naturally supposed from our proposals. I must therefore make a few explanations. I am a graduate student at Cornell and while in residence here have been chaperoning Keniston House, one of the Freshman houses that accommodates some twenty girls. Since I am remaining in Keniston this summer, there is no reason why I cannot have Miss Sun in the house with me and give her the tutoring she desires. In accordance with the rules of the University, however, it will be necessary for her to register as a student and pay the summer tuition fee of fifty dollars for the six weeks. For this fee she may take several courses, and it is my suggestion that she may take at least one English course - I assume this is one of the subjects in which she needs help - and another course, perhaps in mathematics or language if she so desires. In addition to this, I should give her what tutoring she needs, either as a help to prepare her class-room work, or in other subjects at the usual rate for tutoring here, two dollars an hour. An hour a day would no doubt be sufficient. Perhaps you may feel that the moderate cost of room and board at the University and the advantage of social and class-room experience would compensate for the tuition fee. Miss Sun would probably find the summer experiences helpful in making her adjustments to American college life next year. If you would prefer, however, that Miss Sun should not register in the Summer Session but that she should take only the tutoring lessons from me, I could make satisfactory arrangements for her to live in another house near Keniston. She could still take her meals in the dormitory with me, if she so desired, and could come to Keniston at any time during the day. I should, of course, be much interested in her work and progress and should expect to give her encouragement and companionship aside from the formal tutoring. If you are interested in these plans, I shall be able to receive Miss Sun on July first. I am sending you, under separate cover, an announcement of the Summer Session with suggested courses in English marked, but shall be glad to have you propose any others. Stearns, October 5, 1926 Relation A related resource OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS We are writing you concerning the arrangements at the college in regard to any outside social life you may at any time desire your daughter to enjoy. In the first place, however, we wish to explain that in the judgment of the Administration the social life inside the college is so varied and full that social engagements outside the college are not necessary for the proper recreation which every student needs. Should you decide that during her college years you do not desire that your daughter shall during term time have other social pleasures than these, she will in our judgment be the more likely to get the best from her college life. Should you on the other hand for any reason wish that she may be allowed certain other privileges enjoyed by girls of her years, our regulations require notification of this from you, as follows:- 1) Because of the uncertainty as to the security of the ice which forms in the Chemung River, we require a special letter on file for those students who wish to skate there. 2) Because of other dangers we require a special letter of permission in the case of students who wish to do active philanthropic work in the city. 3) Because of the tendency to homesickness on the part of freshmen we ask a special letter of permission from parents who wish freshmen to visit home from time to time as they may desire. 4) Because we deprecate attendance upon dancing parties in the city, as unsettling to the student’s work and because we can assume no responsibility for the character of the persons our students may meet at such general gatherings, we ask a special letter of permission for students whose parents are willing they should go to dancing parties in the city. In the four cases named above a letter of general permission to cover affairs for the year will answer, should you care to give it. 5) There are however conditions under which we do not accept such general permission. One of these is absence from the college residence halls for over night when the student is not going to her own home or to the home of a near relative. In order that a student may leave college for over night to visit elsewhere, it is necessary that a letter SPECIAL TO THE OCCASION shall be on file at the Dean’s Office, received by her from the parent or guardian of the student, naming the lady to be visited and the address of this lady, and if possible the precise date of the approved visit. The regulations do not allow us to accept general permissions for a student to make visits or to be absent over week-ends, either in or out of the City of Elmira. Local guardians for out of town students are not recognized by the College (Exceptions to this ruling may be made by the Social Committee in special cases such as when a guardian is required for students from foreign lands.) We are not allowed to base permissions in any case upon our personal opinion of the social desirability of the visit. Perhaps it should be mentioned that in any case a student may not leave college for over night more than three times a semester unless her class standing is exceptionally high or unless she is summoned home on account of illness in the family. For this reason it is desirable to plan visits well in advance of the date set. Our doubt is in regard to her interest. Is it not possible that her father might be induced to approve of a shift in her college course which would allow her to do what a number of American girls are doing here. The course they take is a five year course. If Mary took it it would be necessary for her to work three more years. The five year course specializes here at the college in Physical Sciences and allows the student to take practical work and instruction at the Arnot Ogden Hospital so that at the close of the fifth year they are able to graduate with a B. S. degree from this college and to take their diploma in nursing at the hospital. This program calls for summer appointments at the hospital and is likely to take also other vacations but the girls who are taking the course are full of enthusiasm and do not seem to grudge the time that is stolen from what would otherwise be recreation. If Mary Sun’s people desire for her the advantages of a thorough college education and if they are willing to compromise with her in the way I suggest it may be that her problem will be solved. If you are in correspondence with her parents or can bring pressure to bear through other friends in China it seems to me that a very great kindness would be done both to the family and to Mary. If something of this kind can be arranged I think that so far as the college is concerned Miss Sun’s present low stand work will be overlooked in the hope of better results next year. If something of this kind cannot be done it seems to me unjust to the girl and her classmates and the college for the present situation to continue. Our president, Dr Frederick Lent, is and has been for some weeks quite ill so that it is and has been impossible to report any college matters to him. The results of the January examinations seem to us to indicate that too much time is being spent in social life and that the necessary attention to the classroom subjects may on this account be lessened. We need your cooperation in our effort to gain the attention that should be given to these subjects. Under the conditions of probation and disqualification, should such occur, we trust that your influence may be added to ours to prevent the distraction from required work which now occurs. It is based upon the instructor’s reports handed in in the middle of each semester (i.e., November 10th and April 1st) and at the end of each semester. The midsemester reports indicate only whether a student’s work is satisfactory or not satisfactory. The final semester reports give the grades in the usual form. Either a Dear’s Warning or an Official Warning will lead to general classroom probation and to disqualification. A "not satisfactory" Notice leads to classroom probation in the subject concerned. Classroom probation prohibits any absence from any classroom exercises. To break classroom probation means deduction of a half-hour of "degree credit" for each absence not excused by the Committee on Students. Disqualification prohibits the student from taking part in extra-curricula activities, as, for instance, athletic, musical, dramatic or other activities. It also prohibits week-end absences and such social functions as dances, balls, and absences after campus hours. In the case of illness or other emergency, disqualification may be modified in certain items by the action of the Committee on Students. A "not satisfactory" Notice is sent to the student. Notification of a Dean’s Warning or of an Official Warning is sent to the student and to her parents.
