Shortly after his bright, little, almond-shaped eyes open, the Chinese boy is introduced to chopsticks, and it is only another step forward to place one of these long oars in his hands and tell him to use it. The illusion that the Chinese are synonymous only with laundries and chop-suey parlors is dispelled as soon as the coxswain thunders his order and eight Chinese-manned oars “dip in.” These orientals are of slight build, but they possess the requisite muscular power and stamina to withstand arduous crew training.
