I am glad to Inform you that I have just heard from Mr. Lee and that he acknowledges the justice of your bill. Apparently the misunderstanding has been largely my own, and it arose from the fact that Mr. Lee was almost a year late in sending me for payment bills contracted by him for board last year. I assumed that your bills and those referred to covered the same periods, and hence I was unable to explain the situation satisfactorily. My letters written to him asking for light on the subject were not answered, and it is only within a day or two that I have finally heard from him and favorably. I am only waiting now to receive the bill properly O.K.'d and on its receipt I shall send you promptly a check to cover the amount in question. I deeply regret the delay.

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Tommy:

Many thanks for your letter in spite of its rather disheartening news. I don’t like the sound of "probation," and I earnestly hope that you leave it behind you at an early date. Anyway I shall be glad to talk the matter over with you when I come down to New Haven next time, can also discuss the question of summer plans.

With the best of wishes, believe me always

Faithfully yours,

Thank you for your note and for the enclosed check. The latter I am depositing to the credit of your account. I am also enclosing herewith check for thirty dollars to cover incidentals as you have requested.

The trustees voted last night, and unanimously too, to extend the use of the school grounds and buildings to the Chinese students at their coming conference this summer. I understand that Kwan is to be chairman of the committee on arrangements, and I am hoping, therefore, to have a visit from him shortly to talk over the situation and general arrangements.

Can’t you make some use of the spring vacation in getting clear of that probation tangle? I hate to feel that you are tied up in that sort of a knot, for it isn’t always easy to untie it. Whatever happens, you must finish the year with a clear record; and if you are going to do this, the earlier you can get started the better. Don’t take any changes anyway. Neither you nor I would be able to look the world in the face in days to come it you should get dropped out of Yale. Now, and not later, is the time to prevent such a catastrophe. Go at it hard, and good luck to you!</text>
