My dear Dr. Stearns, I do not know how to express my appreciation for the persevering attention you have given to Kuo Fong, it is a great relief to me to know that he is taken better care of than at home. Please do not feel too concerned over his attack of nervousness. It was not altogether a surprise to me because I know he had always been so affected. This complaint seems to run in the family. His brother Kuo Tso has been under electrical treatment for this illness, and is now quite recovered. Constant worrying, I believe, is the main cause, and I agree with you that with less occasions for excitement, Kuo Fong should be able to control his attitude of mind and thus make a decisive gain towards his physical improvement, and general welfare. Concerning, his plans for entering Amherst this fall, I have no particular objection, although, personally, I would like to have him in a business school, in this matter, however I do not want to force him against his own wishes. As long as he obtains your approval before actually carrying out his ideas, I shall be quite satisfied. Since receiving Kuo Fong’s letter, I have already sent you a check covering his overdrawn account. I am sorry this has happened so whenever due to some unexpected expense the regular allowance will not be sufficient, I would like to be notified if possible before the fund becomes exhausted so as not to bother you with making loans for overdrawing. His August remittance will be made as usual. To discuss the present situation in China is very discouraging. We have a government which has no authority and consequently cannot be held absolutely responsible for any action or lack of same. As an example of its powerlessness, the bandits who held up our only train de luxe are holding daily conferences on an equal footing with our Minister of Communications over conditions and demands submitted by the bandits for the release of foreign and Chinese travellers who were captured and kept as hostages, still we are hoping for the best. A change of the Cabinet is again expected; something might be accomplished by the new administration. Among the older boys who had been under your guardionship, I know quite a few. in fact I have three in my own family. S.S.Kwan and Tommy Lee are both in Tientsin, and they both remember Andover well. Dean Thomas C. Esty, Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. Dear Tommy: May I have a word with you, and then a word from you in regard to one Kuo Fang Tsai, one of our Chinese boys who hopes to enter Amherst in the fall? The situation is this. Tsai passed for Harvard last fall, and after some pretty stiff summer tutoring, Elementary Algebra , two years of French, and two years of German. He was with us early this year but dropped out, chiefly because his health made it impossible for him to keep up with the work. He finished out the year up at Mt. Vernon with my brother and, according to his statement, is entitled to College Entrance Certificate from that school in three years of English and third year French. This will give him a good start towards admission. Will the boy be allowed to substitute Chinese for Latin, something that has been done by many Institutions and for many of these easterners in times past? According to Tsai I believe you have done it at Amherst for some of them. If this can be done the boy will have left, as I understand it, only History and one Mathematics or Physics to make up to gain full admission. I think he will cover these during the summer as he has had Mathematics, at least, and I think some History. The boy is my personal ward while here in America, as his two brothers were before him, and I am very anxious to advise him wisely as to the plan he should adopt for the summer. He tutored at Long Lake Lodge last summer and will probably go there again if he has a chance of getting into Amherst in September. I believe he ought to go to college this fall if he can possibly do so. He has pretty good ability, but has been handicapped for some years by rather poor health I believe, though, that he is outgrowing this, and a very careful examination to which I had him subjected by Dr. Pratt in Boston reveals no chronic weakness. It should be added that Tsai is an extremely popular fellow with his mates. He was captain of our Soccer Team, and is one of only two or three of the many Chinese boys who have been here to be taken into a local Society. I am glad, also, to have the report of Helen Tsai's scholarship standing to date and to find that Helen has been proving a satisfactory member of your school community. My own feeling just now is that Helen will probably be much better off to make her headquarters with you for the Christmas holiday season, though I do not for a moment wish to ask anything unreasonable. Before I decide the question definitely, I am going to find out from Mrs. Nye in South Weymouth whether she has any plans or wishes that would tend to alter my judgment. I wish I could provide for both Helen and her brother here in Andover, but this does not seem practicable or wise.
