Dr. Alfred E. Stearns, Philips Academy,
Andover, Massachusetts, U. S. A.

My dear Dr. Stearns,

I have received your letter of December 3rd and the report of the Huntington School on the work of my son for which I want to thank you sincerely.

I have come to the conclusion that it would be the best for my son to return to China and accept a position with the Kiangnan Dockyard at Shanghai or with the Naval Dock at Foochow which I trust will give him some practical experience as well as a chance to learn. The kind of work which requires skillfull hands I believe would suit him the best, for when he was a boy, I observed him repairing tools rather skillfully. After he has worked in the Dockyard or the Dock for some time, he may discover the necessity to have more book knowledge and then I get a tutor for him.

I feel certain that with the growing of age my son will find it not profitable to remain longer in the United States unless he can find an opportunity to learn mechanics in such factory as Ford’s. I am going to write to him a letter persuading him to return to China next June to accept an appointment as I have previously mentioned. Whatever influence you can exert in the same direction in order to urge him to return will be highly appreciated.

I avail myself of this opportunity to thank you for what you have been doing for him.

With kindest personal regards.
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Stearns,

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th July, and Mr Greenwood’ s acknowledgment of my cheque, for which I am ever thankful.

In forwarding you, again a cheque for $600 through the usual channel, please acknowledge on receipt.

I am desirous to be informed, when my boy will be able to graduate from the present preparatory school, and I would further trouble you to kindly check his progress in his studies and write me, so that I my know how he is getting along. By his home letters, in English, I have no objections to the simplicity, but there were grammatical inaccuracies, which he should have been more careful.

While I have every confidence in you, however, I am much afraid that he might go with bad companies and get into bad habits, which are common among boys of his age, therefore I earnestly request you to use your best means to keep him away from them, and would like to hear from you in the matter.

Assuring you my appreciations for all your kindness and with my best wishes from

Yours very truly,

In the meantime, you will please strictly check his educational progress and not allow him too much liberty with his boy friends.

I am enclosing you a cheque for $600 so that in case of emergencies, you may have funds on hand to disperse his actual needs.

In sending my kindest regards, I must admit that I am greatly indebted to you for all you have done for us.

Yours very sincerely

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns,

I have received your letters of November 26th and December 22nd respectively, for which please accept my hearty thanks. The reason for my failure to reply to your letter of November 26th earlier than this is the absence from Tientsin of my friend Mr. Hollington K. Tong for nearly a month.

As you suggested I will give my son another chance to secure a higher and possibly professional education in your great country which I have no doubt will be of great assistance to him when he has to make a living for himself. I hope that Kong will do better this time and exert his utmost and I am also writing to him in this connection.

It will be to his benefit if Kong can complete his high school education and then take dentistry in a school approved by yourself or learn some practical dentistry in a place where the theory is taught and at the same time he has the opportunity to have practice. But I leave the matter for the preparation of his future entirely to you. I want to thank you most sincerely for the great interest you have taken and will take in him. I have no doubt that his failure to pass examinations must have caused you keen disappointment, but in spite of this you have been so patient with him. It is unnecessary for me to say that I am very grateful to you.

With greetings of the season.

Yours very sincerely,

                <text>My dear Mr. Stearns,

I am in receipt of your letter of October 25 for which I want to thank you most sincerely.

After careful consideration of the case of my son, K. Y. Tu, the best thing in the circumstances is for him to return to China and do some work so that in his daily contact with fellow beings in the business world he may find his education inadquate, and finding it inadequate, may have a greater desire for study. So I have sent you the following telegram

"Alfred Stearns, Philips Academy, Andover , Massachusetts, Kong returns China fund insufficient cable Commission Tientsin Tu"

In regard to the last sentence, I mean that if my boy does not have sufficient money with him to buy railway and steamer ship tickets, please cable to me as to the additional amount that is needed so that I can cable it to you.

What you have done for my boy during the last four years has earned my everlasting gratitude. His failure to make progress in his studies has been entirely due to his own faults which include, I believe, his fondness of play and his lack of a serious purpose of life.

I want to thank you again for your kindness in guarding and guiding him during his stay in the United States, and as I am sure you will continue taking an interest in him, I will write you from time to time as to his progress after his return to China.

Yours sincerely,

I have received your kind letter of August 12th and want to thank you again for the great and continual interest you have taken in my son.

I am looking forward to the receipt of another letter from you in which I expect you will give me some information regarding the possibility of my son learning the profession of a dentist. I believe it will take too long a time for my boy to study dentistry after graduation in a college, especially in view of the fact that he does not make a rapid progress as I expect of him in his studies. Your opinion on this matter will be highly appreciated.

I am very thankful for your assurance that you will do everything in your power to urge my boy to make the best possible out of the opportunity I have given him.
