My dear Mr. Stearns,

IN reply to your kind letter of the 29th, December, 1925, It grieves me very much to hear of my son's giving you so much unnecessary troubles, your consenting to take him under your care is already deemed a special favour, a kindness I am not entitle to transgress, consequently, my feelings are disturbed and really annoyed, that my son should have disregarded your fatherly advices, extravagance is itself a bad habit and especially in the time of youth, whence the valuable time should be spent in reviewing his lessons, certainly it is not my object or intention to send him to the States for the visiting of friends or sight seeing.

I concur every word in the copy of your letter to him and now request you to strictly convey to him, "that he must obey your instructions; not to say necessities, he must obtain FIRST your permission, and to live and keep within his means.” In conclusion, you will please frankly tell him for me, that if he will not behave himself as directed he better pack up and return.

What you have done for me, no words can express my ever sincere gratitude to you, often I transverse ever the thought in my mind, how fortunate I am to have a distant friend, who takes so much troubles and interests in my son, and with a hope, some days he will return well educated and join me in the same gratitude, it is most discouraging, however, you will kindly accept my sincere thanks for all the troubles takes, I enclosed herewith a cheque for $1000.

In the meantime, it is my ardent desire that you fix a definite limit for his monthly expenses, cut down and curtail all incidental expenditures, above all he must in each case get permission from you first before he acts, trusting this will put a step to his unwarrented excuses, and by first opportunity to inform me of the nature of his studies and progress in the form of examination papers.

With kindest regards from

Yours most sincerely.

My dear Mr. Stearns,

In acknowledging the receipt of your kind letter of the I7th of March, I have the pleasure to enclose another check for $600. which I trust will reach you in due time, so that it will not embarrass you too often of borrowing for my son, I am glad to hear of his trying hard to keep his expenses within the limit, still he requires the strict supervision from you, which I am greatly indebted.

I beg to take this opportunity to assure you that in sending you the little present as an emblem of friendship, and it was not in any way to mean service reimbursement, for your kindness in caring and looking after him is priceless and un-payable. At any time you may have occasion to require any service in this part of the land I hope I may have the honor to serve you, to re-pay a minim part of what you have done for me. The unsettlement of my country is causing much suffering among the population and the cost of living is also increasing daily but here.

May be through an oversight the copy of the accounts was not enclosed as stated in your letter.

With kindest regards, I remain

Yours most sincerely,

A E. Stearns, Esq*
Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.

My dear Mr. Stearns,

I have to thank you for your letter of the 5th, February and also for the troubles taken of enclosing the statement of disbursements to date, I have full confidence in you, thereby your statement is sufficient without the receipts.

It is not only in America alone, the enormous increase of living is felt here in China, a man earning a hundred dollars a month some years ago, could do well, but now he can hardly stand on his feet. On the first part of February this year I remitted you $600. that sum ought to last him 3 or 4 months, as I base my calculation on tutoring, room and board, and monthly allowances, which would leave an ample margin for other necessities.I trust you will not allow him to contract new debts or made loans, without the express permission from you, this will avoid the running up of bills and borrowing.

I am glad to hear that he is working hard to meet the requirements for the school and eager to do the right things you order him, again I am exceedingly thankful to you for your kindness in looking after him, who had given you so much extra troubles. With best wishes and kind regards from

Yours most sincerely,

I have to thank you for your letter of March 26th. In reply I fully endorsed your opinion regarding my son; I may say further, that education cannot be forced upon, unless secure through self-will; whereas there is nothing left to be done, but a regular job, where knowledge and profession could be secured at the same time*
Enclosed please find a cheque for $600.00 remitted through the usual channel, you will please inform my son, that this is my last remittance, should he wish to return, he may use It as his passage money, and should he decide to remain, to be an apprentice In any Job that would suit him most, I would not object; I am exceedingly grateful to you for all the troubles you have taken on his behalf, it is my sincere wish that I may have an opportunity to thank you personally, and also to be able to do something for you in return.

Would It be possible to get him in one of the Ford’s factories, however I leave it to you, as I know you will do you best to help him, if he stays.

Shall be obliged for an acknowledgment for the cheque, and to assure you attain of my heartfelt gratitude to you.

With best wishes and kind regards.
Yours very truly,

In perusing your letter of the 13th of April, I have to thank you for your kind expressions contented and gives me much pleasure to know that at the least I have done something to please my friend, who has been ever so kind to undertake and give his valuable time in looking after a friend’s son.

Regarding to his lending money to friends I quite agree with you in refusing him and with your strict supervision, you will please let him to understand, that he is to sweep the snow from his own doorsteps and leave the generosity for the time being, until he is able to support himself, and it is my desire that he should stick to this policy, as overdrafting and unnecessary expenditures are both annoying and undesirable, should there be a balance on hand it is best to reserve it for emergencies.

On the 27th last month, I forwarded a check for $600. and no doubt it has already reached you by this time.

With best wishes and kind regards from

yours ever sincerely,

My dear Mr. Stearns,

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 26th July, and Mr Greenwood’ s acknowledgment of my cheque, for which I am ever thankful.

In forwarding you, again a cheque for $600 through the usual channel, please acknowledge on receipt.

I am desirous to be informed, when my boy will be able to graduate from the present preparatory school, and I would further trouble you to kindly check his progress in his studies and write me, so that I my know how he is getting along. By his home letters, in English, I have no objections to the simplicity, but there were grammatical inaccuracies, which he should have been more careful.

While I have every confidence in you, however, I am much afraid that he might go with bad companies and get into bad habits, which are common among boys of his age, therefore I earnestly request you to use your best means to keep him away from them, and would like to hear from you in the matter.

Assuring you my appreciations for all your kindness and with my best wishes from

Yours very truly,

My dear Mr. Steams,

On the 2nd July, I wrote to you in reply of yours of the 25th May, it is now over a month, I think your reply is on the way, having the accounts before me, which you are so kind to take the trouble of forwarding, gives me the exact financial position of how it stands.
I am enclosing a cheque for §600. by the usual channel, trusting it will reach you in due time.

It has been very mild this summer in this part of China this year, probably as usual we may have hot autumn days and cool evenings from now.

Wishing my boy will spent his summer vacation by being useful in many ways as a youth may do, and at the same time not to forget of what he has learnt.

Hoping you are well and with sincere and kind regards from

Yours ever truly

                <text>My dear Mr. Stearns,

I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter of the 25th of May and a statement of accounts from January 2nd to May 22nd. Before my son left for the States I had noticed he had a defected nose, now through your thoughtfulness and the kindness of Miss Carter that the operation has been done, which shows the great tenderness and care by you and his surroundings, 1 must apologize to his tutors and miss Carey for an oversight and slip of mind, in not mentioning their names in my previous letters and to thank them through you, which I take this opportunity to do so.

While admitting of giving you endless troubles, I wish to know, what my son has accomplished, in his English; I would suggest, that his tutor might give him a task, in the form of an examination, and inform me of the result.

In one of my previous letters; I stated I had a desire for him to learn the dentist trade, as according to his intellectual abilities and for the following reasons: (I) while my country is in such an unsettle state I wish him to have a profession,(2) quick and easy to learn,(3) does not require a large capital,(4) by little
diligence may not harm and endanger one’s life,(5) the earning will not come from the poor people.

Further I would he exceedingly pleased to have your valuable opinion, as to the shortest period of preparation, to enable my son to begin the courses of dentistry.

Assuring you of my sincere gratitude and with kindest regards to those who are interested in my son.

I remain
Yours most sincerely,
