Dr, A. E. Stearns
Phillips Academy Andover, Mass.

Dear Mr. Stearns:

As the close of our college year in Boston University is getting near, I am now planning my work for the summer. I studied during every summer that I was here, and this year, I wish to broaden my knowledge in a different way. I like to get into a bank, where I can learn something about Foreign Exchange and the Underwrite and Issue of Bonds and Debentures.

Since I am not acquainted with any person who has some connection with a bank in Boston, I wonder whether or not you can get me a position in the Andover National Bank? I am not aiming for salary; I simply want to work for them so that, in return, I may get some practical knowledge about the different functions of banks.

I shall be glad to come to see you sometime this week-end or any time after my final examinations; that is after May 24.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Stearns:

It seems very unlikely that I can find a position in a Boston bank. I went to see Mr. Ripley last Friday, and on the following day their manager of the Foreign Department answered me that he could see no opportunity for me. This morning I went to the Massachusetts Trust, and was told that their posts were all filled. Subsequently I tried the Old Colony Trust. But to my disappointment Mr. Phillip Reed was not there; he goes there only twice a month for the bank meetings.

I am thinking about going down to New York City, but I have not decided yet; for if I should be unable to get a job there, then my trip would be a total waste.

Yours very truly,
