<text>Dear Sir:

The son of an old Chinese friend of mine Liang Yu Ho, (M. T. Liang) has just come here from China and my friend wishes him, if possible, to go to Cornell as soon as he is able to do so.

My friend, Liang Yu Ho, spent a day or two in Andover, I believe, a year or two ago where some of his young student friends were and perhaps are now.

Thomas Liang, the boy in question, arrived here too late to enter by examination any of the preparatory schools and after talking with my friend Mr. Warner, Pincipal [sic]of the Technical High School, here, he has started in tentatively.

It is my feeling, however, that he may be able make more rapid progress in a preparatory school and I am writing to ask whether or not you can take him and if so, what the over all expense approximately will be.

I am enclosing with this, copy of a letter which Mr. Warner has just handed me upon which my only criticism is, that I doubt whether he will need as long a preparation of French and mathematics as Warner seems to think, for the boy is bright and a worker.

I shall be very grateful to you for such information or advice as you can give me.

Yours very truly,

                <text>My dear Dr. Stearns;

I am very glad indeed to have your letter of November 9th, and I only regret that I did not at the time, write directly to you, but as I have not the honor of knowing you personally and did not remember hearing Liang speak of you directly, I took the more usual and formal course in writing Andover.

Liang wrote me early in the summer asking if I would be willing to act as guardian for Tommy and his sister Grace, and later suggested that Tommy round out his secondary education at the Technical High School in this city, where in the past a half dozen boys, young friends or relatives of Liang and Tong Shiu Yi, over whom my father and I exercised a guardianship, had received their education,-and whence they had gone to various technical schools and colleges. So, I took no steps toward placing Tommy anywhere else until it appeared, after talking with the Principal of the school here and watching his career for a couple of weeks, that a prep school was the place for him.

I knew Liang’s strong predilection for Andover and wrote accordingly, and feeding that Andover might be unable to take him, also asked my son-in-law, Myron Williams, who is one of the instructors at Exeter, if it could be arranged for Tommy's reception there, in case he could not go to Andover. Hence the situation.

As you can readily understand, I appreciate most fully your very generous offer and in spite of the fact that it might be unfortunate to unsettle Tommy's career by a shift at this time or in the near future, the unusual advantages of such a change through your offer, are so evident that my only hesitation is on account of the financial question involved.

While Liang is relatively wealthy, he has I know, a large demand upon his exchequer, not only for his own family, but through his feeling, common to all the Chinese of his age and station, of responsibility toward many others not so fortunate, related in some way to him, and unless some arrangement could be made with Dr. Perry, whereby his fees already paid and presumably to be paid could be rebated, I should hesitate to make the change this school year. If, however, you think this can be done, I most heartily approve of it. Let me thank you again for writing so fully in the matter.

Liang and his cousin Tong came to my father in the seventies; we grew up together as youngsters during the period that they were here and Liang has stayed with me more or less on his later visits to this country, so that I am delighted to feel that his youngest child may have the opportunity of getting his schooling with you and the more keenly so if he may have the benefit of your personal influence.

Yours very truly,

                <text>Dear Dr. Stearns:

I am pleased to report that I believe Alfred showed a marked improvement in his general attitude throughout the summer. At first he showed an imperious attitude and seemed to expect things to be done just about his way. It was a manner that tended to make him very unpopular with the other boys, and we paid special attention to trying to make him see that he was not better than the others and that he would receive no special favors of such a type as his money has unfortunately seemed to give him previously. As a result his whole method of going at things changed, and I think that he not only enjoyed camp more because of having more friends, but also that he left with the reputation of being a good fellow.

I hope that he does not slip back into his former attitude because, from other boys, I have heard that it made him unpopular at the Stearns School, and I know that it would not gain him any friends at Andover.

Mr. Mills gave Alfred ten hours tutoring, nearly all in English. I hope it helps. Mr. Mills seemed to think that his main trouble was an inability to understand questions, but that, once they were clear to him, he had little trouble.

Sincerely yours,</text>

Alfred was at the Stearns School last year and the year before, and, as you probably know, took the examinations for the lower middle year at Phillips, failing them rather badly. Dr. Stearns suggested that in view of his examination papers you would probably be best able to tell what he should work at and to send him the right books if any are necessary.

Hoping that this will not put you to too great inconvenience, I am.

Dear Mr. Stearns:

Will you kindly give me Tsai’s address? I wish to write to him to see whether or not he is going to the Chinese Students’ Conference at Cornell University this year.

As I did not succeed in getting a job in Boston, I finally decided to go to summer school again. I am now taking Money and Banking, and Corporation Finance. It is rather too warm to study in the city, but it is better than having nothing to do day after day.
With best regards,

Yours very sincerely,

I am sorry that it is necessary for we to inform you that Tommy Lee has been placed On Probation because of more than the allowed number of absences. I have had a talk with him and it seems that he did not thoroughly understand our rule regarding the number of unexcused absences which a student on Official Warning is allowed to take. He has taken several over the allowed number this term and, therefore, this action is necessary. He clearly understands that it will be impossible for him to take more than four more without making it necessary for him to leave the School and assures me that he will endeavor to make his attendance record more satisfactory. This Probation will naturally be removed at the end of sixty days if his scholarship record is satisfactory at that time.

I was very sorry that you were not at Andover when I was there week before last. Although my visit was brief, I enjoyed it immensely and hope that I shall be able to repeat it sometime in the near future.

Very truly yours,

I am very sorry to have to inform you that Tommy Lee is reported as very deficient in Drawing, German, and Physics for the present term. I have not yet had an opportunity to talk with him and for that reason I do not know the reason for such a lapse. I shall endeavor to see him soon and try to ascertain the source of the trouble. It will be necessary for him to show a decided improvement if he is to successfully pass all of his examinations for the year. You say that he was a good student at Andover and should do well. If this is the case, it seems to me that there must be some underlying cause for his poor showing. I shall do my utmost to be of assistance to him and should be glad of any co-operation which you can give me.

Trusting that I may be able to make a better report after the next Freshman Faculty meeting, on May 10th, I am,
