My dear Mr. Stearns:

I thank you very much for your letter

of May 10th concerning Mr. K. Y. Tu. I will be very glad to discuss the matter of his plans for the next school year, if you wish to take up the matter at a future date. I think, all things considered, that Mr. Tu has been comfortable here in his relations and associations and if he can go on with the regular High School work, and also have the special attention which one of our teachers has given him in English this year, for another year it would appear to me that it would be better for him to return here than to break into new surroundings and establish new contacts. However, this is a matter for you and Mr. Tu to decide and I will await your information concerning the same. He does make a good member of the school family and conducts himself properly and I have no fault to find regarding his deportment or attitude around the school.

With kind regards, I remain

Dr. Alfred Stearns, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts.

My dear Dr. Stearns:

Your communications of October 26th enclosing a check of $327.16 for your ward, K. Y. Tu has reached me. I thank you very much for your prompt attention to this important matter and the same has been credited to Mr. Tu's account.

I will disperse the fifty dollars for personal expenses with care and make him render me a definite receipt for all moneys received from me so that the same can be returned to you from time to time, when I may ask for a reimbursement of his personal account. He has not asked me for money for personal expenses up to this date.

I think it would be wise for him to go to Rochester, a near-by city and take a room at the Y. M. C. A. during the Thanksgiving recess. I think it is wise for the students to have a short time away from the school activity. He tells me he has a number of Chinese friends at Syracuse and that would be a good place for him to spend his Christmas vacation. I always feel that it adds zest to the students when they return after a vacation. They do not feel that they have obtained the full benefit of the vacation, if they remain around the school.

Mr. Tu has been perfectly responsive in every way to all obligations and he likes our school and is responding to what he finds here.

I have not had an opportunity to have a good conference with him since your letter has reached me, but will make it a point to do so this week-end and then will write you more fully concerning what you write me in your letter.

Very sincerely yours,

Dr. Alfred Stearns, Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.

My dear Dr. Stearns:

I am in an uncertain condition of mind regarding the authority you give Mr. Tu to contract medical bills without consulting me. He has been down to see a physician in our town who has given him medical treatment on his foot for Eczema. The bill, as presented to me for a little over two weeks, was twenty-one dollars. I told the physician to stop the treatment until I am advised by you what should be done. Were such bills countenanced by you when Mr. Tu was at Andover? I am enclosing the bill and you can either send the check direct to Dr. Kober or mail same to me and I will see that he receives the same.

While writing, I might state that our school closes for the Christmas Holidays at norm on December eighteenth, and reopens again on the evening of January fourth. Our buildings are closed and we do not wish any student to remain here as we clean and renovate the rooms etc. Will you make arrangements for Mr. Tu to spend his vacation in Syracuse or New York where he has friends, and make the necessary financial arrangements sufficiently in advance so that he may be provided with finds?

The young man is working and conducting himself in a commendable manner.

Very truly yours

My dear Mr. Stearns:

Replying to your letter of March 5, concerning Mr. Fayuen Sun, I must write that he was never a student at this school. Early in the school year we had a letter addressed to him in care of this school and thought it rather strange at the time, for we had never heard of the man.

If you obtain any information showing why he represents himself as coming from this school, I would be interested to know of it.

I hope you will overlook the provincialism of a westerner who has known some thing of the record of Phillips Academy in caring for Chinese students, but has known of your intimate connection with it. With your permission I shall send the letter on to the parents in Tientsin,to whom it will be a very great comfort.

Mr. Y.C. Lee, a Chinaman in the Freshman class, has stated that you will be his bondsman. If that is the case, that is if you are willing to sign a personal bond requiring no deposit of collateral in the usual form I shall be very grateful if you will do so, using the blank enclosed herewith.

As I understand it is entirely optional with you whether you will go on Mr. Lee's bond or not. Your willingness to do so will depend on reasons satisfactory to yourself alone.
