Needless to say I was much excited when they were received and I learned that you were in this country and planning a visit to Andover and your old school. I left Andover the first of July for my summer vacation in this northern wilderness. It is a long journey, and I seldom find it possible to make the trip to Andover again until I pack up for good about the first of September and return for the new years work. I can’t bear to think of the possibility of missing you altogether, but as your letter did not tell me how long you are to be in this part of the world I am still hoping that our paths may be made to cross before you return to China. Indeed if you could see your way to make the long journey up into northern New Hampshire a warm and very friendly welcome would be awaiting you at Home Camp. Perhaps that is too much to hope, but I do most earnestly desire to see before the American visit ends. Please write me more fully about your plans and let me know if there is the slightest chance that you can get up here for a little visit. If that is out of the question I surely must see you in Andover in September if you are still in the country. You have been often in my thoughts during recent years. Either a year or two years ago someone sent me a newspaper clipping announcing your arrival in America and giving what purported to be the substance of an interview with you. It was then about a week before the annual base ball game with Exteter and I at once reserved a ticket to that historic game for you and sought in every way to locate you. I telegraphed to the legation in Washington and got into touch with numerous Chinese friends, but no one could give me the slightest information as to your whereabouts. Finally I can me to the conclusion that the whole newspaper story must have been a myth. Anyway I heard nothing more of you or your whereabouts until your recent message reached me. And my disappointments was very great. Do write me of your plans. If you can possibily see your way to run up here for a visit I shall be delighted and will send you promptly fully insrtuctions as how the trip may best be made. I should have replied to you earlier, but since my return from abroad, I had to get my backworks up to date, hence the delay. I was indeed sorry to have missed seeing you, it was a bad time of the year, during summer vacation, to visit anybody or anywhere, but I had no choice. When one has a large travelling programme on hand and has a limited time to carry it cut. It was impossible to have everything fit in nicely. It was a pleasure but more of disappointment to me in my recent visit to Andover, because you were not there, I saw only two old friends, Mrs. Curdy and Prof. Eaton, but fortunately, I met Prof. Graham who did his best to make my short visit as pleasant as possible. He has kindly sent me his book. “It happened at Andover”, I am writing a short not to thank him. What a wonderful change has taken place in the old town: but many of the old land marks are still there which I had no difficulty in recognising, I would have enjoyed the visit ever so much if I had the opportunity to see the boys in their recitations and in a game of football or baseball. I went to see my old boarding house which was kept by Mrs. Hammond and was told that the family had moved away or they were all dead. I could not locate the exact spot and asked a lady at that neighborhood if she knew the Hammond family. She informed me that her family has been living there for 35 years, but they have never heard of the Hammonds. After 43 years of absence from a place one must expect many many changes. Having visited the places of interests and reviewed many pleasant old memories. I felt very lonely and depressed so I left Andover by the midnight train for Boston where I stopped over one day and then started my homeward journey via Montreal and Vancouver. As you have rightly said “Let us hope that some further chance will yet be given us to meet again and renew the old friendship” I had a very enjoyable trip to England, and Europe. As I was one of the commissioners representing the Hongkong Section of the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley and was travelling together with an ex-Chinese Prime Minister from Peking, I had the opportunity to meet many high class people and to see lots of interesting things. My boy Yih Chang is now in Tientsin and is doing very well in business, but he has not yet succeeded in getting rid of his old compliant Asthma. I have told him that he ought to write to you. In closing this letter I should like to add that it was a great satisfaction to me to note the progress and development of the old school in recent years. The boys are also anxious to be given a chance to try our work here at Andover; and I am disposed to accede to their request if such a plan commends itself to you AS wise. I cannot help feeling, however, that my original judgment in the matter is still correct, and that two of the boys will find our work beyond them. On the other hand they will doubtless be better satisfied if they have made the attempt and failed than they would be if we insisted on a different type of school at just this moment. Please understand, however, that this is only a suggestion, and that I shall be governed entirely by your own wishes in the matter. The schools I have chiefly in mind are the Dummer Academy at South Byfield, Mass., and a home school conducted by my own brother at Mont Vernon, N. H., known as the Stearns School. Dummer Academy has about fifty boys and the other school from fifteen to twenty. I believe that the boys would be well taken care of in either place; and the expenses of both are more reasonable than are those of most of the other schools known to me.
