My dear Charlie:

Your good letter reached me this morning.

I am glad to learn that things are going so well for you. May the good work continue and may you secure among the new environment Just the kind of training that will best fit you for largo usefulness in your home land.

I have Just written K. T. I am sending him the money forwarded to me by your father this past summer. I understand that he is to deduct what you owe him and turn over the balance to you to be handled directly and personally by you. This is a big responsibility but one you have got to learn to shoulder sometime and I hope and believe that the experiment will prove justified by the results. If you are ever going to succeed in business in China or anywhere else, you must first learn to handle your own affairs in a businesslike way and to learn the real value of money. You know of course that I have had my misgivings about your ability in this line in the past. Just you see if you can’t fool me now and prove to my complete satisfaction and arouse the pride of your family and friends.

With every good wish to you in which your many friends here would join if they knew of my writing, believe me
Ever sincerely yours,

Dear Sirs:

The bearer of this letter, Mr. K.P.Tsai, or commonly known in this country as Charlie Tsai, has been a student at Phillips Academy for several years and my ward during that time. His two older brothers were here before him and his father, an early American student, is a prominent official in China.

Mr. Tsai has been taking work with us preparatory to a college course. but he has not made the progress hoped for largely because of illnesses. His brother, who is now in this country, has discussed the problem with me and it has seemed wise to give the boy a business training from now on. 'The Eastman College has been selected and I hope that you will be able to admit the boy and give him the courses he desires. I feel sure that you find him as we have found him, a responsive and likable fellow who will prove a desirable member of your student body.

Very sincerely yours.

My dear K. T.:

Charlie dropped in on me this morning and gave me the shock of my life, for I had been trying ever since midsummer to figure out whether you two fellows were still alive and if so where on earth, or under heaven, You were looted. It seemed almost as if the earth had opened and swallowed you up. Anyway I am glad to get in touch with you once more and especially happy to know that your physical condition is so much improved. May the gain continue until the old trouble has entirely disappeared.

I have just written a letter in Charlie’s behalf to the Eastman Business College. If anything further is required don't hesitate to let me know. In the meantime I am wondering what to do about the boy’s funds and am disposed, if you agree, to turn over into your hands the money received several weeks ago from your father and amounting to $2.000. Does this proposition meet with your full approval? I am still perfectly willing to act as the boy’s banker if anything can be gained thereby, but if you are to be in the country during the year I imagine that you will be far better able than I to handle the situation to the boy’s best advantage and interest. Please tell me frankly which course I should adopt. I understand from Charlie himself that he already owes you quite a sum above the amount which I sent you last summer, for which, by the way, I have not yet received any acknowledgment. I felt greatly relieved when Charlie told me this morning that the check had reached you, for I feared it might have gone astray.

With the old time good will and best of wishes, believe me

Very sincerely yours

Mr. Tsai Chou Kie,

My dear Tsai:

Let me acknowledge receipt of your letter of August 29th.

The $2,000 referred to was received during the latter part of August, just before I returned from my summer home in northern New Hampshire, and was at once deposited to Kuo Fang's account. I have held it there waiting further instructions from you or from him. or from K.T. Your letter so far is the only intimation I have received as to the disposition to be made of the money in question.

As I think I wrote you some time ago, J turned over to K.T. the balance which I was carrying on K. F’s account, in the belief that K. T. was to handle his brother's affairs during the remainder of the American sojourn unless it was eventually decided to allow K.F. to continue his education in this country. I have heard nothing from either of the boys since midsummer; when they were in the Catskill mountains, but I have no doubt that they will advice me shortly where they are, what their plans are and what disposition therefore shall be made of the funds you have recently placed in my hands. If it is decided that K.F is to remain in the states and continue his education, I shall of course be very glad to continue to act as his guardian so far as conditions permit, although I am afraid I have not been a very helpful or inspiring guardian in this particular case.

With warmest personal regards and kindest remembrances to the various members of your family circle, believe me

Very sincerely yours,</text>

My dear Mr. Stearns:

I beg to inform you that a sum of two thousand gold dollars ($2,000) was remitted to you by telegraphic transfer on the 28th instant thru the International Bank of New York for Kuo Fang’s expenses.

With reference to Kuo Fang’s future, I have instructed Kuo Tsao to see what best arrangement can be made for him. In case it comes to the decision of sending the boy home, then whatever the balance left on hand, after a complete settlement of all his accounts, may be turned over to Kuo Tsao. If it should be better for the boy to remain and further his studies in the States, it is my earnest wish that you will be kind enough to continue in giving him the benefit of your guardianship.

I presume you have by this time received my letter of July the 5th. The last I heard of Kuo Tsao that he is recuperating himself in the Catskill Mountains. He has no date of returning to China yet.
With kindest regards in which Kuo Pao joins,

Very sincerely yours,

Dear Sir;

Your letter addressed to "Mr. Alfred Stearn" and "Phillips Exeter Academy", Andover, Mass., has been duly received. Please note that as I am not a New Yorker my name carries an S on the end of it and that the school I represent is Phillips Academy, and not the Phillips Exeter Academy, our sister school located up in New Hampshire.

I am greatly relieved to have the confirmation of the source, of the $2,000 check received by me late in August, for it was my understanding at the time that it came from my old friend Mr. Tsai Shou Kie for the expenses of his son who has been my ward for several years. I am still in the dark about Mr. Kay Tu though a further report from the Western Union at Seattle, Washington, advises me that the boy carries letters of introduction to me from several prominent Chinese officials, including one or two of our old Andover boys. I have no doubt therefore that he is perfectly reliable but that through some miscarriage the check which is father is supposed to have remitted to me has failed to reach its destination. As he should report here within the next few days I shall no doubt be able to check up with film and straighten matters out.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Stearns:

I thank you heartily for your kind letter and the unusual interest you have taken in Kuo-Tsao’s welfare at the time of his illness. The fatherly care you have given to Kuo-Fang ever since he has been with you is something for which I am also grateful. In fact, under your proper guidance all my sons in Andover have turned out to be boys of strong character, an asset so valuable to their future, of which I am well proud. This they owe entirely to you. I feel, therefore, greatly touched that there are at least a few warm-hearted friends in America who have given so much attention to and concern over my boys. Indeed, words are too feeble and inadequate to express my profound appreciation for all you have done for them, I assure you. I am glad that you have shown rigidity to Kuo-Fang in money matters and I sincerely hope that you will continue to exercise your discretion over his expenditures.

As Kuo-Tsao’s trip home has to be postponed on account of his health, the arrangement for Kuo-Fang’s return has to be automatically cancelled. During his vacation, school at the summer camps may be good for him. Perhaps you have already arranged for him for the summer. As to his school in the coming fall, I have decided to leave the entire matter to Kuo-Tsao who will no doubt consult with you.

Thanking you again for your kind concern and attention, and with warmest personal regards, believe me

My dear Mr.Tsai;

Your letter of July 5th reached me a short time ago and I can not refrain from expressing my appreciation for the friendly and generous sentiments you have expressed therein. It has been a privilege and in the main a pleasure, to do what I could for your boys during their American careers and while in K. F.’s case I have been disposed to feel discouraged at times and have reason to believe that I have not fully won the boy’s confidence and good will I am grateful for the opportunity that I have had to serve them and you. Some day I hope that Kuo Fang himself will realize that even though I seemed at the time a bit hard on him I had nothing in view but his best interests. You will realize too I have no doubt that it would have been a much easier and pleasanter thing for me for the time being to do and say the things which pleased him that the fact that I did not would seem pretty clearly to indicate that I care more for his future success than for his present smile. Don’t let me give you the impression that Kuo Fang has been lacking in cooperation and good spirit. Far from it. He has almost always been more than respectful in his general attitude towards me, but I have found it always impossible to curb his financial expenditures and I am confident that he has not always felt happy over the criticisms that I have offered and the recommendations that I have made.

Since your letter arrived I received notice from the bank of the receipt of $2,000 from you to be used, I assume of course, in Kuo Fang’s behalf. As I had understood from K. T. that the boy was to give up the American connection and return home to the near future, and as he was at that time staying with his older brother out in New York state, I took the liberty of sending K. T. a check amounting, as J recall it at this moment, to three or four hundred dollars, and which represented the balance of K.F.’s account in my hands. The boys both left the New York place soon after I happen to know, and I have had no word yet acknowledging receipt of the check in question. Neither have I had from K. F. a request for further funds, something a bit out of the ordinary. In the meantime I have deposited the $2,000 to the boy's account in our local bank and will hold it there until I receive further word as to its final disposition.

I have had a very bitter disappointment this summer in my failure to connect with our good old friend, C. L. Chow who has recently been in America and even in Andover. Then I heard that he was in the country I wrote him suggesting a possible visit to my camp in northern New Hampshire, but I imagine that he felt that this would be attempting too much.At any rate the next news I had of him was in the form of letters, from him and from some of my Andover friends telling of his visit to Andover and to the haunts of his school boy days. I don't know anyone whom I would have been gladder to welcome to Andover and my own home and it hurts badly to know that Mr. Chow is already on his way back to his own land and that I did not even have a glimpse of him while he was here. His warm and friendly kindness to me during my visit to China some twelve years ago was unique and has never been forgotten.

With warmest personal regard, believe me always

Very sincerely yours

AXS/S

Mr. K.T.Tsai

My dear Tsai,

Your brother has just written me suggesting that in view of the uncertainty of his plans for the immediate future end his consequent inability to determine how much money he will require to carry him along I should send you two or three hundred dollars to be dispensed by you in his behalf as needed. The suggestion seems to me a good one. I find, however, that the balance of are funds in my hands sent me by your father on K. P.’s account amounts to only three hundred and sixty dollars and fifty five cents. Accordingly I am sending you check for that amount, -$360.00-. As I understand that K.P. is to return to China with you in the near future I assume that you will have no objection to handling his money for him while he is still in this country. I do not desire to shirk any proper obligations in the matter, but it seems to me that this would be the natural and probably the easiest way to deal with the situation in view of the facts referred to above. I hope that you will agree.

I have just received a letter from our old friend Mr. Chow Shou Son telling me that he is in New York and hopes to visit me in Andover this week. Naturally I am terribly disappointed for I shall not be in Andover again until September. Possibly I can persuade Mr. Chow to pay me a visit up here, but I fear he will think the journey too great. Mr. Chow did everything for me when I was in China in a dozen years ago and I should dearly love to try to help make his visit to this country at this time as pleasant and profitable as possible. He writes from the Vanderbilt Hotel in New York. .

I do hope that the summer up in the mountains is doing your wife a world of good and that she will soon be as well as or better than ever. My heartiest good wishes to you both. Am I going to
get another glimpse of you before you return to China?

Ever sincerely yours.
