My dear Tommy:

Let me thank you for your note advising Miss Jones of your position on the Chinese crew and the records of Kwong and Tong in China. These are good pieces of news and we are mighty glad to get them.

What about yourself? I haven’t heard of or from you for a long time. Why don’t you write me now and than [sic]? And whom are you coming up to see me? Except when I occasional¬ly run across Kwan or hear from him, I have little reason to know whether you are alive or still in the country, or what you are up to. Don’t you think it’s about time to reform?

With the best of wishes, believe me always

Mr. Y. N. Chang
Industrial Development Bank of China
Peking, China

My dear Mr. Chang:

Let me thank you for your very generous and friendly letter of August 28th which has just reached my desk. It has been a real pleasure to know your boy and to do whatever I could, which has been little enough, to make his stay in America a happy and a profitable one as well. He has been most responsive and always ready to cooperate to the fullest extent. I have, missed him greatly since he left us to take up his course in college.

I fully approve of your method of handling the boy’s funds. The
only question in my mind was prompted by the fact that in a number of instances bills have been sent to me for payment; though no funds for such purposes had ever been placed in my hands. I think I once raised the question with Sinley himself as to whether you had any wishes in the matter; but I had not the slightest intention of suggesting a chance in the arrangement.
I do hope that you will find it possible to visit America some day, as suggested. My relations with the Chinese students who have come to us and with their families at home extend now over a period of more than twenty years and have been most delightful. At the present time, as you perhaps know, I have several of them staying in my own home. My own altogether too brief visit to China in the winter of 1912-1913 is still, and always will be, one of the pleasantest memories of my life.

Again thanking you for your friendly sentiments and with personal regards, believe me

Very sincerely yours,

Thank you for your very kind letter received this morning. I am glad for your sake and for all those concerned that your brother’s body has safely reached your home in China. You all must feel a certain relief in the knowledge that this is so.

My dear Mr. Van:

Your most interesting letter of January 5th has just been received. With it have come the memorial books which you have been so kind as to send me. Be assured that I appreciate deeply your thought. Copies will be handed to your brother’s friends, and especially to those of the Chinese boys who knew him most intimately, and who, I am sure, will be delighted to receive the memorial.

I shall always recall most pleasantly my acquaintance with you, though I cannot refrain from regretting that it should have been brought about by so sad an event. It is hard to realize why such promising fellows are taken from us just when they seem to be about to start on careers of real usefulness and accomplishment. We need more men of the type of character of your brother; intelligent, eager for the truth, alert, faithful and dependable; these are qualities of which we never find a sufficiency among the youth of any nationality.

I trust that all goes well with you during these chaotic days. Even China seems to be facing her peculiar problems, and I can only pray and hope that they will be solved aright and for the best interests of your nation and the world. If ever fortune gives me a chance to visit China again, I shall hope to have the pleasure of seeing you.

With my kindest regards, believe me always,
Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Van:

I was very much pleased to receive this morning your letter of February 4th, and to learn about your plans for the future. I cannot help feeling that you are wise in deciding not to hurry home at this time. Practically nothing could be gained as I could see it by such a step. It did seem too bad to have your regular plans for the year completely upset. I can only express the hope that the remainder of the year may be full of good things for you, and more than justify your decision to remain at your work.

I hope you will always feel that you have in me an interested and sincere friend. If I can in any way serve you while you remain in America, or for that matter after you return to your native land, call on me please without hesitation. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to feel that I was doing something that was of help to you. I trust too that I may have a chance to see you again before you leave for China.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Mr. Yung:

Your letter addressed to Dr. Stearns is received during his absence from Andover. He probably will not return before September first. I have just telephoned to the Andover Bank to ask whether Dr. Stearns deposited for your account any check from China, and am told that he did not. If you are in need of funds, however, let us know and we will try to accommodate you. We will show your letter to Dr. Stearns upon his return to the office. Will it not be possible for you to secure leave of absence from Mr. Warnock by showing him this letter?

If we can help you in any way, please let us know.

Very truly yours.
