I have always found Sinley a gentleman in the best sense of the word, faithful in his endeavors, and responsive to every suggestion offered for this welfare. Although it is, of course, proper that he should go on with college work at this time, it is with a feeling of keen personal regret that I am forced to see him sever the Andover connection. In my judgment, Sinley is a boy who has within him the possibilities of becoming a strong and helpful influence in the home land when he returns. You fellows have not big problems to settle when you get back to China. If they are going to be settled right, China must count on you to tackle them in a spirit of absolute honesty and personal disinterestedness and with an intellectual and moral equipment which shall enable you to meet all the darts of clever and unscrupulous antagonists who would thwart your efforts if they could and who sometimes hypocritically posing as patriots would betray their country for material gain. I fully understand your position as my unofficial guardian, and therefore you feel at times not at liberty to act officially. As you already know, this authority was transferred to you from Mr. Chen, my former guardian, upon his return to China two years ago, the time at which I could hardly find a guardian other than you, who so kindly accepted the responsibility. I regret the fact that the full authority of a guardian has never been delegated to you by my parents on account of the source from which my allowances come.
