My dear Chang:

Thank you for your good letter.

After the morning appointment at Yale on Sunday, March 16, I am due to leave for the Choate school where I speak in the afternoon. Following that engagement 1 expect to return to New York, where I have an engagement Monday. It is possible though not probable, that I shall be in New Haven Sunday evening. I am afraid though that 1 can not count on that time for a definite engagement with you much as I should like to talk over your problems with you. Perhaps we can get together at a later date.

Faithfully yours

My dear Chang:

Many thanks for your good letter. I am glad to be a little more clearly advised as to the character of my guardianship. Please understand that whether officially appointed or not I am not ready and willing to you in any way within my power. My only wish is not to exceed my proper authority; and the extent of that authority has never been made fully clear to me, at least in the usual way.

I wish I could join you in the trip to China. If you run across any of my old friends there, give them my warmest regards, please and accept for yourself my best wishes for a most happy homing. I have not yet received any definite word from Yung family beyond the reports brought me by Antung. From what the other boys tell me I imagine that little confidence can be placed in Antung and the instructions be xx given me purporting to have come from his father. The whole situation has been, and still is, very disquieting.

Faithfully yours.

My dear Chang:

I enjoyed immensely your letter of October 27. It reached me just before I left for New Haven Saturday, and I was hoping that this trip would give me a chance to see you in person. Unfortunately I had to leave New Haven immediately after the service Sunday morning in order to meet a similar engagement at the Choate School early in the afternoon; but it was fine even to shake hands with so many Andover follows as I was privileged to meet in the Yale Chapel.

I am delighted that you find your college life and prospects so satisfactory. Don’t be misled by the superficial, but seek only the things that are worth while, and which so often lie beneath the surface, and the things which are going to make you a more effective instrument for the placing of your country in the very van of the civilized nations of the world. You fellows have not big problems to settle when you get back to China. If they are going to be settled right, China must count on you to tackle them in a spirit of absolute honesty and personal disinterestedness and with an intellectual and moral equipment which shall enable you to meet all the darts of clever and unscrupulous antagonists who would thwart your efforts if they could and who sometimes hypocritically posing as patriots would betray their country for material gain. It is a great fight and a worthy challenge and you must be prepared to play a big part in it all. Good luck to you!

I am returning the form of the bond which you sent me, because I am afraid that I am not qualified to sign it for you. You see I have never handled your personal funds and hence I have no authority over them. I imagine that the bond should be sent to your father at home. Please ask the College Treasurer about this. He can doubles instruct you better than I can.

With every good wish for the days ahead, believe me as of old

Very sincerely yours

My dear Sinlay:

Your fine letter reached me this morning. I do not think I ever received a nicer one or one that meant more to me. As you probably know, I received a brief letter from Mr. Kung several weeks ago, in which was enclosed a draft which more than covered all outstanding bills. On receipt of this, I at once wrote Mr. Kung a long letter explaining my anxiety, not about the money, for that didn’t worry me a bit, but about the whole situation in view of his silence.

Antung apparently has not been playing fair either with his father or with me; and I am distressed beyond words, for, with Anjohn’s death and in view of a long and serious talk I had with Antung at the time, I had dared hope that the boy had come to his senses and was about to turn the corner and play the man. The boys tell me that Antung is located in Boston, where he is loading a pretty gay and fast life, and that he has only a nominal college connection, I believe, with Boston University. Evidently this is done just to keep up appearances and with no serious intent of securing an education.

I thank you again and a thousand times for your more than friendly interest in my problem. I am confident, too, that your visit to Mr. Kung and your personal report must have meant much to him, so I know it means everything to me. As I expect to be in New Haven Sunday, I do hope you will give me an opportunity to see you.

With renewed thanks and every good wish for the new year just opening, believe me

Sincerely and gratefully yours.

My dear Chang:

My heartiest thanks for your fine letter of recent date. I am glad to know of your whereabouts and of your progress. We have all Just returned from the camp at Connecticut lake. Arthur Sun was not with us this year, as he was at a Tech camp, and Frank Lin left early. The rest, however, stayed through. Charlie Tsai was in the office this morning on his way to Amherst where he is to take entrance examinations, though I doubt whether he will obtain admission before another year.

The opening school rush is on, so that I can only send you this brief note. It carries with it, however, the old-time good will and all kinds of good wishes for the days ahead.

Very sincerely yours,

My dear Chen:

Your ward, Mr. T.K.Yang, has shown conclusively that he is not ready for the work of this school. The boy’s present knowledge of English and his ability to use it are so limited that it is practically impossible for him to understand even what is going on in the classes he attends.

His case is identical with that of many a Chinese boy we have had here in past years, and in all cases we have recommended the same course; namely, a year in some small school here the stress can be laid on English and the maximum amount of personal attention can be given the boy in his work. This is very clearly what Mr.Yang needs at this time, for it is simply a waste of his time and money to go on here at present under his existing handicap.

If I can aid you in any way in finding such a school as I have in mind, I shall be glad to do so. Of course I hope that, when the boy has become fully prepared to most our requirements, he will be able to return and with an assurance of making a real success of his work.

Very sincerely yours,

                <text>My dear Mr. Chen:

Thank you for your frank letter of November 15.

I have talked with my brother at Mont Vernon and find that he has room to take Mr. Yang for the balance of the year and that he will be glad to do so. Consequently I have arranged with Mr. Yang to leave tomorrow for Mont Vernon and I hope and believe he will receive for the balance of the year just the kind of training that he especially needs.

Mr. Yang’s actual expense here will amount to approximately $120.00, which will include his board, tuition, etc., as well as for the actually time he has been with us. My brother advises me that he will make his charge on the same basis, to begin when the boy makes his contact with the new school.

Mont Vernon is about forty miles from Andover. It is a small home school of some thirty or thirty-five boys who live in dormitory houses in charge of resident instructors. The boys are well taken care of and lead a healthy and wholesome life. The several Chinese boys who have ben there in the past, and who have later come to us, have given good accounts of themselves, which strengthens my belief that Mr. Yang will find just the kind of influences and instruction there that he especially needs at this time.

Very sincerely yours,
